Factors Influencing Language Development Of The Pre-school Child

  1. Family Size: Environment of a large family constitute handicaps to Language acquisition. A family which has one or two children will be able to provide learning materials such as books, toys etc than family with more children.

  2. Socio-Economic Status: This refers to the income, wealth and social status of parents. Wealthy and highly income parents creates a conducive learning environment for the children example: providing private teachers to each children.

  3. Parental Education Background: Educated parents have been found to influence the language acquisition and school achievementof their children. Whereas uneducated parents do not motivate and encourage their children language acquisition and do not interfere what the child was taught at school.

  4. The Nature Of Family Organization: Family Organization involve different methods of parenting styles such as democratic, autocratic and laissez faire. Democratic family present an atmosphere of sensitivity, interest and clear definition right, privileges and responsibilities because they are close to children, speak with them and answer questions and correct wrong uses of words and pronunciation while others do not.

  5. The Health Of The Child: Health is all about mental, physical and social well being of the child. The Health of the child is a significant factor in language acquisition. A child who is not healthy will not have the interest and motivation to learn how to speak.

  6. Sex Of The Child: Girls develop language earlier and better than boys. This may Bea's a result of early maturation as the part of girls which lend to give them advantage over boys in language development.

  7. Bilingualism:This is the use of two languages in either the home or the school. For instance, if an Akwa Ibom man marries an igbo woman, two languages have been introduced in that child.
