The Problem of Evil: An Ancient Conspiracy

We live in a world where many claim justice and denounce conspiracies against humanity, there are not enough reasons, even with a lot of foundation, it is enough to see the consequences of the management of COVID19 in each country to ask oneself, why does this type of wrong? Who is behind the evil?

When speaking of evil there is also a direct reference to morality as an expression of good and bad, as well as to the conception of God. Consequently, an unfinished hard battle is being fought in the philosophical field that encompasses the religious between theists, agnostics, and atheists, I do not know if someone else escapes me, however, I believe that as long as evil exists the fight will not end, this It leads me to ask myself again, is it possible to eliminate evil?

I recently read a post that alludes to Shakespeare's parrot, a well-intentioned critical metaphor for those who only repeat the thoughts of others. That made me reflect on the unique ability of the Parrot and to see the playwright in the feathers of the Parrot himself, and how difficult it is to contribute something new and disruptive within the knowledge constructed so far. Fortunately, wandering on the shoulders of the giants of knowledge has been an effective method in the progress achieved and this does not exclude philosophy in any of its branches. So I will try to emulate the talking bird.

You have heard more than once about the struggle between good and evil, the recurring theme of most action movies, a tension between the two, some say that they are the extremes of the same thing, and that is where the dilemma is born, in the consensus of its definition, nature, and origin.

One aspect that surprised me was reading about the intense debates on the matter, where the fray is centered on proving or denying the existence of God in terms of allowing the existence of evil when he is an omniscient, omnipotent, and omnibenevolent deity. This has been called, the problem of evil, and it is expressed based on the following questions and answers in a Wikipedia entry in both Spanish and English:

  • Is it that God wants to prevent evil, but is not able? So it is not omnipotent.

  • Are you able, but don't want to? So it is malevolent.

  • Are you able and willing to do so? Where does evil come from then?

  • Is it that you are not able or willing to do so? So why call it God?

In conclusion, the argument of the problem is to affirm that because evil exists, either God does not exist or does not have the three supreme attributes. From which derives another branch of philosophy called Theodicy whose purpose is the rational demonstration of the existence of God. Perhaps there is an ontological and teleological problem here, and the right questions are not being asked about the origin of evil as a problem.

Another aspect that comes to my mind when reflecting on this issue, it is the case of Adolf Eichmann and the application of the final solution during the Second World War, which motivated Hannah Arent to write about the banality of evil. In the report, she explains how a normal person who acts within a bureaucracy can commit atrocious acts without measuring the effects of their functions, that is, without being an evil person, they commit acts with dire effects. How such controversial cases fit into the justification of evil in the world.

Meanwhile, the current civilization is more interconnected with a scientific paradigm that justifies secular behavior, inclusive, many religious fundamentalists accept and operate in it. Evil exists, for pragmatists, it does not matter much, if God exists.

With all that has been argued, a current of thought is denoted that advocates the replacement of absolute axiology by a relative one that is built permanently, unrelated to the deity. I see in this the purpose of the great conspiracy, to eradicate God from the heart of man, where good and evil, right and wrong are their own invention.

Although philosophers and theologians of all times have indeed induced societies to abide by models in pursuit of the collective good and the highest good, it is also true that there have been those who proclaim that religion is only an instrument of domination of the elites, a simplistic abstraction to disqualify the collective belief a superior being responsible for order and good, giving a place to science as the panacea that in the future will lead to the eradication of all evils without God's help. A conspiracy against God himself and to the detriment of man. In a world without immutable morals, anything goes, a justification for any unimaginable barbarity.

It is an exciting topic for debate, and a conspiracy in full swing, and perhaps I will develop in future installments.

The ‘problem’ is set on the wrong assumption, so those who does not believe has the upper hand in their arguments. God does not function like they are projecting. Our God is God of mercy. He didn’t ever punished anyone. He only sets the rules. People have a free will to follow the rules or not. If they do not follow rules, it ends in evil.

You are the one designated to fight the evil.

Hello @lighteye,

You are right. I believe it is part of a conspiracy with somewhat sinister objectives. However, I also believe in the philosophical process without prejudice to the faith they profess, there are honest people in search of the truth.

Very well written and articulated thoughts on some big questions. The metaphysical realm is vast and rarely tangible by the perceived capacity in our physical world and body. Thanks for your thoughts!

Hello @soulbasis,

Thank you for your nice comment. You're right a lot when speaking our limited capacity perception of the reality. Therefore, every decision is a challenge, not important the small that seems.
