Political correctness? Things no longer civility to say

Political correctness, according to the British Encyclopedia of Knowledge, is defined as a term referring to the use of flowery language to speak, so that the least possible degree of insult and prejudice is expressed. Especially when groups of people are described based on factors outside their control, such as race, gender, culture of origin, and sexual orientation.

The concept of correctness has been subjected to debate and criticism, and has been contested by various political groups of all directions, as this term is often used in a sarcastic tone, especially the idea that using an alternative or harmless language can change public convictions, their beliefs, or affect the results.

The concept of political correctness evolved

The first appearance of the term was a Marxist-Lenin synonym after the Bolshevik revolution in 1917. It was referring to a commitment to the principles of the Russian Revolution and the policies of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union. At the end of the seventies and early eighties, the term was used by liberal politicians to refer to some of the tough issues adopted by the left wing, especially what was said to be focusing on the external structure rather than the actual content.

In the early nineties, the term was deliberated by conservatives to question and oppose school curricula in liberal-left universities in the United States of America, and after that the term gradually escaped until the end of the nineties, as its use was limited to comedy shows and some satirical political programs by the left spectra, to mock the General attitudes of conservative parties.

Linguistically, the practical applications of the term political correctness are rooted in its original roots in the desire to eliminate group exclusion and prejudice against it based on the use of language. According to the hypothesis of linguistic relativity, our understanding of reality is determined by our treatment of ideas that are influenced by the language we use. Within this framework, the language is what determines our reality, what we understand from it, and the reactions we show towards it as well. Language reveals and reinforces our biases. Therefore, according to the previous hypothesis, the use of a sexist language contributes to an increase in sexual prejudice, and the use of a racist language helps to motivate racism.

Those who oppose the use of the term political correctness see it as reducing and limiting freedom of expression in debates and records that occur in public circles, and affirming that placing such controls on language clearly contributes to achieving the concern of self-censorship and restraining and restricting behavior, since the supporters of the term rightness are in The real people talk about insults and prejudices that do not exist.

Others tend to argue that political correctness is a politically correct concept, and it is used to limit the legitimacy and justification of hate speech and exclusion.

In any case, it seems that the discussions taking place to understand this term all revolve around the field of language and nomenclature, which is acceptable in both cases.

The pros and cons of political correctness
On the positive side, most of its advocates say that our interaction with others is greatly influenced by the quality of language used in their description. Therefore more careful terms must be used, as harmful language contributes to reinforcing negative prejudices of different groups. Within this framework, the strict use of respectable rhetoric enables us to prevent the exclusion of any groups based on social, ethnic or sexual preferences.

As for the disadvantages mentioned by the anti-Sahaabiyya, it is at the top of its list limiting freedom of expression and restricting debates and important debates on issues in contact with the social milieu of all. They go further by accusing the defenders of this soft, cultural pattern of creating a language that is more hostile than the language they are trying to criticize, while responding to this claim that the idea that excessive use of such terms is nothing but to stress the importance of stopping hate speech and racial discrimination.

Anti-Sawabiyya also refer to the 2016 Pew Institute survey that showed that 59% of the American people see that many people are easily offended by the use of bad language. According to Pew, most people eschew the use of offensive and insulting language to others, while right-wing movements have become overburdened to create confusion and an illusion of insult that may not be there.

Finally, opponents of Al-Sawabiyyah add that telling people that it is wrong to express socially unacceptable opinions and beliefs will not contribute to the departure of these opinions and beliefs in the first place, meaning that when the title of «he does not own a house temporarily» instead of the title of “homeless” will not contribute to the solution The problem of poverty and finding work and housing for it, meaning that the language here did not help in changing the results.

In the sense that reasoning may succeed in causing some people to swallow their embellished words based on social responses, but that will not end the motivations and beliefs they possess that motivated them to pronounce that, and perhaps they will store these terms within them until they are brewing more and become more toxic and deadly and “no political correctness” “.

Scientific study: the importance of political aggravation
Researchers at the University of California found that replacing a politically correct stylized word with another harsh, untrue word, for example the word "illegal" and "unreliable" refugees makes people see the speaker as being more honest and less likely to intrude others.

Researcher Professor Juliana Schroeder says that the cost of using politically non-polarizing terms makes the speaker appear less warm and planned but earns his true sincerity, after conducting nearly 9 experiments on 5,000 volunteers, whose results are published in the Personal Journal of Social Sciences and added by saying that People may then be reluctant to endorse the most politically right leaders because they see them as more attached to the tendencies they possess, which may at times show them false or pretentious.

Although the defense of this concept is linked to the liberals and its criticism is linked to the conservatives, the researcher found that there is no correlation between the reality of the concept and the trend, and that both parties are equal in the level of insult in the non-flowery language. There are also incorrect synonyms used to insult the conservatives, such as "evangelical" or "foolish white" style.

One of the researchers contributing to the study, Berkeley Haas adds that "political impurity" is practiced with groups towards which liberals feel pity, such as different sexual orientations and immigrants. They view these dealings negatively, while conservatives see them honestly as they are.

He also says that they have found the opposite to be true also. When an abusive language is practiced against groups that conservatives see sympathy for, the liberals here are the true honest.

Participants asked researchers from different beliefs to talk about their concept and how they define political correctness, the definition that appeared to be the use of language or behavior that is sensitive to the feelings of others. Especially others who may be inferior to something. In order to study the phenomenon on the various political spectrum, focus was placed on specific addresses, for example, illegal immigrants, signs of the type of immigrants destroy America and so on.

This allowed participants to measure the reaction of the participants when changing certain words or phrase related to identification and the like, and they found that most people, whether liberal or conservative, see the politically inconsistent statements and descriptions as more accurate and reliable. It was said that the rest of the opinions and beliefs of the politically disorganized leaders could also be expected.
