My Weed Garden in June

Time flies! This is my second garden journal, and I'm really enjoying to make these post. This month my weed garden is looking a bit sparse compared to last month. I'll tell you why in a minute. You know, I really don't notice the changes in my Weed Garden during the month as I see my plants everyday. It's only when I put all the photos together do I realise how my plants have changed during the month, or even a week.

THE LAST OF MY LETTUCE

This month I harvested all my lettuce, as they were bolting. They're supposed to be butterhead lettuce which are the loose round variety, but they grew really tall like a mini tree!
DSC_8682.JPG

I was actually very sad to see them go as they're the first batch of vegetables I grew and I had developed a special relationship with them. I blanched a massive plate of lettuce leaves, and still had enough to make a vegetable stock. Well, all good things must come to an end, and that's the end of an era.

MANGETOUT PEAS

My mangetout pea seedling grew really fast last month during the week one. By the end of the second week they had about 3 sets of leaves each and I was a bit worried the would start to tangle with one another. I decided to replant them as I also wanted to try build a wall for them to climb by using an old fridge basket. I could have used normal sticks for all of them, but I had this vision of a wall full of mangetout peas! I don't think my vision is working very well so far.
DSC_8813.JPG

I was looking at YouTube video and one YouTuber said once the plants grow to three or four sets of leaves you should pinch the top off so they would grow better. I was rather hesitant to do this as it meant pinching a lot off, and it's taken so long to grow them to this height. Then I took the plunge, afterall, if its on YouTube and it had a lot of likes, she must be right...
DSC_8704.JPG

Sure enough, a few days a later a second stalk grew on each of the plants and caught up in height with the original one. The only thing is, overall all my mangetout peas haven't grown as much as when they were seedlings. I don't know if it's due to lack of light as they look a bit pale. I will have to reorganise the position of the plants in my Weed Garden.

BELL PEPPER

I'm very pleased with how my bell pepper seedlings have developed, particularly since I saved the seeds from a bell pepper I bought for dinner. I replanted them in plastic milk cartons and drinks bottle as they're deeper than my other containers, hopefully there will be enough space for them to grow. The stay on the window sill all the time for maximum light. So far they're looking good and I'm quite excited to see if they will bear any fruit.

TOMATO

My tomato plants (there are two in this pot) have grown a lot this month - sideways oddly and not upwards. This was taken on 21st June.
DSC_8815 1.JPG

Then within a week, and I hadn't noticed this until I took this photo 6 days later, the branch on the right went U-shape. It's really odd!!! I don't know why this happened, I can only think it's because it was getting a bit too heavy, but then why did it U back up..... weird.
DSC_8861.JPG

Anyway, both plants have started to flower these couple of days, with the small one on the left with more flowers. Hopefully in my next month's Weed Garden journal I can show you some tomotoes! We shall have to wait and see.

COURGETTES

On the June 1, I planted 2 courgette seeds. Within a week or so one of them had grown quite tall. I wasn't sure if it was bolting again as my seedlings have a habit of doing that due to the lack of light indoors. The stalk was quite thick though, so I left them in the container till day 22 and replanted one of them in the biggest basin I had. I hear they grow all over the place so I figured I'd give them plenty of room to grow. It's started to branch out now, I think I will have to cover my carpet with plenty of bin bags if it starts to crawl.

The other seeds I sowed this month are some chives. They've only just gone in a couple of days, nothing to see yet. The packet said they're easy to grow and grow well indoors. Let's see if I have have anything to show next month. Till then, see you!

It is so cool to be able to harvest and eat your own vegetables. Lettuce is the favourite salad in my family.

My plateful of lettuce was delicious, especially when you grow it yourself. I'm really looking forward to eat more of my own grown food.

Thanks for the tip

Your weed garden inspired me to try gardening. I'll try to buy some plants in the next few weeks. I was chatting with @hiddenblade last night about what I can do if all of my travel post reserves are depleted and we were joking about maybe I'll try cooking or photography. Maybe I'll add this to my choices. 😂

Wow you're doing alright with your indoor garden there! I hear you've had some hot weather in the UK? I know it was a fab spring - I can't even imagine how hot it would be above 30! By the way, did you know that @naturalmedicine supports these kinds of posts? xx

You know the English weather is like, a few days of scorching hot weather and that's your summer for the year. Now we're back to depressing rain and cold again!

I wasn't sure, as this wasn't medicinal at all and I don't want to flout the community rules. I'll know for next time. Thanks!!!

I thought for a minute you were growing marijuana, lol.

It seems you have an entire area of your house devoted to gardening. I would too if I didn't have my community garden plot.

Ha ha! That's what my sister just said to me as well!

Luckily I have the whole floor that I don't use so have plenty of space, just lack of light. The plants which have the most potential get the window sill spot and the others will just have to hope for the best

It helps with my boredom and having nothing to do during lockdown. It's surprising how much time it takes me evey week. I just wish I had some outdoor space so I can give it a bit more light and sun.

Wow! The lettuce grew very well! I’m excited for the next update to see the progress and growth! Looks like you’ll be having tomatoes very soon :)

Yes, the tomato flowers are starting to bloom and I got more flowers this morning. I just counted, I got 26 flowers, it would be awesome if they all end up as tomatoes!

What a joy your little weed garden is! Your peppers and tomatoes are looking fantastic. Looks like you are making the best of the space and light that you have. The courgette will indeed creep all over if it starts to take off, so have those extra bags ready. Your lettuce looked great, as well. I don't think we've been able to grow any tender lettuces like that without the bugs attacking it and consuming it all. Pros and cons of both indoor and outdoor gardening, but either way it is a wonderful way to spend the time!

Apologies for the delayed response...
Things are moving slowly in my weed garden probably due to lack of light and sun as the weather has been quite horrible recently. My courgette seems to be growing up slowly rather than out, which in a way suits me as I heard you can train them to climb, I'm going to continue monitor them.

I thought indoor gardening would be pest free but my sister gave me some veggies from her garden last month and they must have come with asphids. Now they've infected my peppers so I'm having to wipe all the leaves every day 😕

Guess it's all part of the fun!!

Hi @livinguktaiwan, hope you're doing well there :)

It's great to see you grow your own veges - I was wondering, what will you do, when there's less sunlight, especially during winter's season? Since these green veges need lights for photosynthesis~

I'm hoping I won't be around during winter and will be back in Taiwan by then!! 😂

Light is a problem as I notice my plants are a bit pale. I've positioned them towards the window now and they seem to grow better. Also I move them to the other parts of the flat at different times during the day to catch the light and sun, that seems to help a little. Plenty of bonus exercise 💪

Your garden has been coming up very well. You have like one whole room dedicated to it, fabulous. I am sure over a period of time they will be all blooming up

The tomato buds are flowering very fast, at this rate I might even be eating all my tomatoes before I write my July gardening journal!!!

Looking great. Sorry for the delay, but I have been down with a concussion this week, and I really had to limit my screen time.

I really like your creativity... using the fridge basket as a climbing rack is a great idea. Over the years, I have used lots of different items you can find around the house to let my veggies climb.

The bell peppers look amazing. So do the tomato plants.
I assume it's indeed because of the weight that the branch 'fell'. It's gonna be even heavier once tomatoes will start growing... but I guess there's nothing a couple of sticks and some clips can't handle.

It might indeed be a good idea to cover your carpet, because when courgettes take off, there's no stopping them 😁

Thanks for your comment @simplymike. I hope you are feeling better now.

I tied my tomato branch up with the curtain rail cord next to the plant and it worked perfect. It takes the pressure off the U bend and the branch is growing up now. Things are moving slow in my garden (or am I simply being impatient 🤔) but at least they're still growing, and thatsa good sign for me 😊

Take care, and i I look forward to reporting my Weed Garden journal again.

Here I am, very late, but let me comment on your post.
First of all, I'm kind of envy you for having so much free space in your apartment. That is a luxury and you're lucky you have it, but also smart to use it for a good cause.

  • lettuce - they grew tall because they were looking for more light. I believe that's inevitable when it's not outside but no worries, at least you had a good harvest and could eat your own food.
  • MANGETOUT PEAS - we always have short peas, that don't need a stick or a wall to climb on, so I can't help you with that but lack of light can be an issue, just as with the lettuce.
  • BELL PEPPER - are looking good.
  • TOMATO - those are also looking good but you may have a problem there. If the seeds are the tall type that needs to be tied up so they can run up (don't have a better expression), like the beans, then you're in trouble. We have at least 5 - 6 types, some are on the ground but the others need a net to hold the weight. I hope you get a good harvest though. One year I was growing tomatoes on the balcony (not that I didn't have plenty at my dad's garden) and I got 6 or 7 tomatoes in total, all small like cherry tomatoes 😁 . Those were tasty but I was expecting bigger ones.
  • COURGETTES - I had to look this up in the dictionary as I've never heard it. I call them zucchini, but it's fine, now i know and have learned something. You're right, these need space and will be growing on the ground.

It's interesting to see how you've organized your garden and I'm really glad you did this. I'm sending all the positive energy to your plants so you can get a good harvest.
Looking forward to your next post 😉 Well done!

My apologies for the delayed response @erikah 😅

Ha ha! I forgot about the different names, courgette vs zucchini and aubergine vs eggplant (which I'm not growing). Not sure which direction my courgettes are growing at the moment, seems like up rather than out.

My tomato plants are continuing to flower which is nice. My sister told me previously that I should gently flick the branch when they flower to help them pollinate but I totally forgot last week as I was so excited in just admiring the flowers every day! I hope it's not too late and i might still get some fruit.

Thank you for the positive energy, need every bit of that!
