Blue Is Hope: My Vision for a Cancer-Free Nigeria // LOH 304

Cancer is a sickness that respects no one it chooses to affect. It has no regard for gender or status—kings, queens, presidents, vice presidents, and more. It deeply saddens my heart to see men, women, and children die of cancer.

Antibiotics, antiviral medications, and many other treatments do not cure it. It is heartbreaking to see the look on our faces when all we can do is try to bring a little happiness to someone during their battle with cancer.

Breast cancer is something we all need to be aware of. I do believe that early awareness can turn the situation around right now.

The Nigerian people today need medical know-how on how to fight breast cancer. My knowledge of research and many other fields has oriented me towards various carcinogenic substances, such as asbestos and plastics of different kinds.

Back in the days, we used polythene bags and plastics of different makes to cook and serve food—especially the favorite moi moi, or beans cake.

Now, we have learned to not only avoid the use of certain plastics with specific labels, but we must also know the early signs, symptoms, and stages of cancer. However, despite this knowledge, people are still passing away, all in the name of cancer.

Some even say that early detection and surgery is the key; however, we lack the infrastructure, and not only that, our medical practitioners no longer want to stay in Nigeria.

This points to a disaster that will unfold in years to come.

Because of this, I think that, as a citizen of this nation, I am ready to impact my country positively by becoming a medical practitioner. I would love to treat and publicly enlighten people about cancer. Additionally, I would love to research cancer and its cure, helping to prolong and improve lives locally.

Most times, I acknowledge the blue sky as a glimmer of hope—an open letter to continuity.

Hmm! The blue skies remind me that one needs not give up on life; one needs to keep moving. The water sometimes looks blue, reflecting the blue skies. I know that blue skies are a result of light. Without light, there will be no blue skies.

In fact, my favourite colour is blue. It makes me feel like a light shining through the darkness. It sets me apart from the outside world.

Blue is not just a colour; it is hope. Light in the darkness, and boldness.

Similarly, I also believe that one day, through my medical education, I will be the light in fighting cancer, especially within my immediate environment.
