Cape Town - The pre-emptive burning possibly saved lives and millions in property damage

Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa was burning. But this was a good thing.

I was on my way to the docks the other day when I noticed that traffic was badly slowing down.

Once I had cleared through a certain area, the view of the mountain became more clear and I understood why there was a reason for pause an distraction!

The mountainside was on fire.

This was, however, a fire caused by and controlled by the Nature Reserve management.

It had been a windless date and the fire was lit early and it had been something they had prepared for.

After a few hours of burning, the fires were put out and another four to six hours and all the smoke had cleared.

It turns out that this was quite fortunate, as not even a full week later and galeforce storm winds and lightning pounded the whole Western Cape area from Saldanah Bay to Mossel Bay.

There were fires in the Peninsula where multiple homes burned down.

I thought about this in retrospect that the Nature Reserve management had had the right idea at the time.

If there had been a fire that made its way up or down the mountain and into the City, it could have been disastrous!
