A propósito del día de los animales que recién pasó, hoy he venido a presentarles a una amiguita que llegó a mi vida sin buscarla: Juliet.

About the day of the animals that just happened, today I came to introduce you to a little friend who came into my life without looking for her: Juliet

Se trata de un Morrocoy sabanero o tortuga terrestre de patas rojas como mucha gente la conoce. Su nombre científico realmente es Chelonoidis carbonaria.

Juliet llegó a mi el año pasado, tiene un año y tres meses aproximadamente con nosotros. Era la mascota de unos niños que terminaron aburriendose de ella en menos de dos meses y un día simplemente me preguntaron si la quería. Y aunque nunca me sentí atraída hacia este tipo de animalitos, en casa la recibimos con cariño.

It is a Morrocoy sabanero or red-footed land turtle as many people know it. Its scientific name is actually Chelonoidis carbonaria.

Juliet came to me last year, she is about one year and three months old. She was the pet of some kids who ended up getting bored with her in less than two months and one day they just asked me if I wanted her. And although I never felt attracted to this type of animal, at home we received her with affection.

Era pequeñita cuando llegó, medía aproximadamente de largo unos 7 centímetros hasta su cabecita, sigue siendo pequeña, ha crecido en un año si acaso centímetro y medio, lo que sí he notado es que está más "alta" en su caparazón.

It was small when it arrived, it was approximately 7 centimeters long up to its little head, it is still small, it has grown in one year if not centimeter and a half, what I have noticed is that it is "higher" in its shell.

Floripondia, Conchetta, Estrella, Lupita, fueron muchos los nombres que se nos ocurrieron para ella, y digo ella porque luego de una corta investigación en la web, llegamos a la conclusión de que era una ella. A continuación dejo algunos tips que nos ayudaron en su momento.

• El caparazón de las hembras tiende a ser más uniforme y regular en su altura, mientras que los machos lo tienen un poco más elevado y, vistos desde arriba, más estrechos en su centro.
• El plastrón es la estructura aplanada que conforma la parte de abajo de las tortugas, es decir la parte ventral del caparazón, y este, en el caso de los machos es algo cóncavo, mientras en las hembras es bastante más aplanado.
• Por último, otro factor determinante es la cola, que en los machos es mucho más alargada que en las hembras, en quienes apenas sobresale.

Floripondia, Conchetta, Estrella, Lupita, were many of the names we came up with for her, and I say her because after a short investigation on the web, we came to the conclusion that it was a her. Here are some tips that helped us at the time.

• The carapace of the females tends to be more uniform and regular in its height, while the males have it a little higher and, seen from above, narrower in its center.
• The plastron is the flattened structure that forms the bottom of the turtle, that is to say the ventral part of the carapace, and this, in the case of the males is somewhat concave, while in the females it is much flatter.
• Finally, another determining factor is the tail, which in males is much longer than in females, in which it barely protrudes.

En cuanto a su alimentación, lo que más disfruta son las flores de cayena (Hibiscus) pero eso sí, las rojas... no le gustan las amarillas ni las de color rosa.Tampoco le gusta la lechuga, lo cual desmitifica la creencia de que las tortugas aman la lechuga...
También le gusta mucho el tomate, el aguacate, algunos vegetales y, desde que probó el atún en lata, compite con las cayenas en cuanto a su alimento favorito.

As far as his diet is concerned, what he enjoys the most are the cayenne flowers (Hibiscus) but he does not like the red ones... he does not like the yellow ones or the pink ones either, which demystifies the belief that turtles love lettuce...
He also likes tomatoes, avocados, some vegetables, and since he tried canned tuna, he competes with the Cayenne Islands for his favorite food.

Al contrario de lo que pensaba, Juliet resultó bastante traviesa e inquieta. No le podíamos quitar los ojos de encima, pues terminaba atascada por doquier o patas arriba.

Contrary to what I thought, Juliet was quite mischievous and restless. We couldn't take our eyes off her, as she ended up stuck everywhere or upside down.

Cuando tiene hambre se va derechito a la cocina, duerme la mayor parte del día, par de veces nos ha dado sustos, porque se escondió y no aparecía con los días.Le gusta encuevarse a veces, sin embargo lo que más parece disfrutar es aprovechar hasta el último rayito de sol (acá no pega mucho, mayormente está nublado el clima)

When he's hungry he goes straight to the kitchen, sleeps most of the day, a couple of times he has scared us, because he hid and didn't show up with the days, he likes to meet sometimes, however what he seems to enjoy the most is to take advantage of every last ray of sunshine (here it doesn't hit much, it's mostly cloudy)

También disfruta mucho cuando la metemos en un platito con agua tibia un rato.

She also enjoys it when we put her in a saucer with warm water for a while.

En fin, Juliet no fue una mascota esperada, pero ha resultado ser una compañía silente y amorosa en nuestras vidas.

Anyway, Juliet was not an expected pet, but she has turned out to be a silent and loving companion in our lives.
