Procatavola orchid single flower
I have this orchid for a few years now and it is such a cool and easy plant! It was still a young one when I bought it and it grew fast to a blooming size (adult). Since then it has been blooming on average twice a year and continuously grows new pseudobulbs (leaves and canes in simple language).
Procatavola Golden Peacock
It is not a very large plant, which is a plus for me, and has a quite compact growth habit. Some orchids will grow like mad and the canes will stick out in every possible direction taking way too much space.
This one starts to look like a nice grassy bush with her thin, link and dark green leaves. With few directions of growth it will start crawling out of her pot very soon. At this point I could split it into two and have two plants :)
Unlike some popular orchids, this one doesn't require winter rest or any different treatment during that time. It will grow all year round. But due to darker and shorter days I noticed it grows a little smaller at that time.
The flowers will grow on a short flower spike from between the leaves as soon as the cane matures. Usually few blooms will grow. I got one this time.
They will stay open for a few weeks and it is one of the longest blooming orchids I own!
After the flowers fade a new cane will start to form from the bottom of the older one (usually the one that was in bloom as it is the youngest, mature one). After it reaches almost full size, the roots will show up followed by a anew set of flowers and the cycle repeats.
It is not a very big flower, maybe 5 cm across and I didn't detect any fragrance, but I just adore that shape, the colour and the little spots on the lip. Perfection :)
Group shot with another orchid of mine - Dendrobium Nobile Pocket Lover. A true miniature with adorable white blooms.

Congratulations!!!!
I really like its flavor!
But mine died :-(
wow.. Love the shots taken..
Thank you :)
What a beauty!
Loved the black background. BTW, do you grow them indoors? I had some orchid years ago but they died because of the lack of sunlight though they were on my balcony!
Yes, I grow them in my flat on the windowsill :) Some types require a lot of light, some less. But in general direct sunlight is not the best, unless it is morning sun. In nature they are protected by threes.
Lack of sun shouldn't kill them. They could just grow smaller and stop blooming.
Green finger to grow these delicate beauties indoors @ewkaw I tend to put them into trees in the garden and hope for the best. Stunning when blooms appear!
Wow.. I would love to be able to grow them on trees! The climate here should be good for them, maybe except winters. I just don't have a tree :p
Find some in-expensive orchids and try them in trees/ shrubs or hang them from easy to access walls.
I know a chap who hangs his outdoors (he has hundreds of them), when they flower they go indoors to be enjoyed, so he keeps them in pots. I am not one for potting plants so leave them rooting directly onto the trees.
I would if I had where. I live in a flat with only windowsills and balcony (which is way too hot and exposed for orchids).
Love the strong orange colour! I wonder if we could find this here!
In some specialized orchid shops maybe. Not in nature as it is a hybrid between two super duper amazing orchids: Brassocattleya Richard Mueller (which is also a hybrid) and Prosthechea vitellina - this one is a specie from Mexico.
Oh! That will be very difficult to locate here. There are not many people who would import orchids!
I bought this one online.. Stationary shops usually don't sell them.
I’ll have a look at online stationary store then! LoL

This shape is really great, a bit like a seastar, hehe .. This contrast of black and orangelooks really amazing ^^
Thank you!
Yea they do look like stars. I like them much more than those full flowers. Seems more elegant to me :)
