DUNE TREK WALK
Trek walk, (boardwalk) through the dunes at Fire Island, Smith Point, Shirley L.I. NY...
Starts at the lookout tower and goes west...
Before the walk begins a plaque explains the changing nature of the area...
The picture shows the new inlet created by hurricane Sandy October 2012...
The barrier island is made of all sand. Mostly very fine beach sand with little nutrients for plants.. But certain plants are able to get a foothold and thrive despite the harsh conditions of poor soil & wind with salt spray...
One plant I am familiar with is Bayberry which grows into a nice size bush having pea size blue/gray hazy berries...
Some trees manage to grow but are stunted by wind & salt spray...These appear to be Eastern Red Cedar an evergreen tree that looks more like a large bush... All these plants require little nutrients in the soil to grow.. They are the first to grow in poor soils then begin to enrich the soil for others to grow....
Trek walk ends.. option is to return the way you came or walk out to the beach..

Thanks so much 😊
Lovely shots of your walk Mike. Nice having the boardwalk to walk on. Beautiful last photo of beach and water.
Thanks red, yes Boardwalk is easy to walk on ..sand is good but slows you down ..Any beaches by you?
Yes quite a few here . I’m on Prince Edward Island and surrounded by some nice beaches. Panmure Island is about a 15 min drive from the house and the one I go to the most.
Pretty up their in the warm weather..I was as far as Campobello Island. Spent the night there..Rocky shore line big contrast from here on Long Island...😊
I’ve never been there but I think your former President Roosevelt had a summer home there. It would be rocky along the coastline.
Awesome post and photos @manorvillemike!! Looks like a place that I would love to visit and looks similar to Assateague Island here in Maryland! 💖

Thanks @deerjay.. Guess these barrier islands all contain the same ingredients..
You're very welcome @manorvillemike! I think you are probably right about that! 😉
