Peppy - The Friendly Skunk

Peppy is a little skunk that comes by to visit quite often. He checks the lawn for insects to eat and then checks if any food left for him.

Skunks get a bad rap, for to protect themselves, they will spray a liquid at a predator that smells like rotten egg gas.

Many dogs get sprayed if they chase one and it’s difficult to remove the smell from them. There are commercial products on the market to help get rid of the smell. Although the spray may get in the dog’s eyes, it doesn’t cause any damage.

Where does the skunk spray come from?

Skunks have sacs located in their anus. These sacs contain a foul smelling liquid produced by the glands that line them. Each sac is connected to the outside by a duct that opens just inside the anus.

When the skunk it threatened he can let a spray go from these sacs that will stop a predator in his tracks.

He will turn to face the predator and the spray will shoot up over his back.

I’m not afraid of Peppy spraying me. He recognizes me and knows I’m not out to harm the cute little critter.

This video was taken by me when he came by in the morning to see what food was for him after the birds had their fill.

I like seeing the little Peppy coming around. Now if I had a dog it may be different as the dog would chase the skunk and the skunk would spray him to keep him back.

Cool, Peppy came back again and you could record a little movie - that's great, Jo 😊

He is a very nice little guy, but he seems to be very hungry and eats greedily ;)
Peppy really accepts that you are there and is not scared at all ... or he is more hungry than scared 😉

Good afternoon Johann. I decided to post this one as I don't know how often Peppy will visit and I will be able to capture him on video again.

The first video I took wasn't as clear but it was a funny one as Peppy started coming up the deck steps towards me and I started shouting for him to stay back.🤣

it was great and cool to view 👍😀
But I think the first video would have been quite a laugh too, although we might have seen only an undefinable blurred black and white thing walking towards the camera, but your scared shouting voice would have been worth it 😁

We had a rainy night but the morning was dry and now we have nice 23 C 🙂

Seriously, I have six L words and I know I have photos for each, also some new ones. Now I hope I have some time today to prepare my post, but I won't publish it before tomorrow 7pm anyway, so you can take your time 😉

By the way, I didn't find a Lamb 😭

The night was nice and cool and today there's no cloud on the sky and the day might become quite warm.

It’s a cool morning here 15C and going into low 20s later.It was good for sleeping and the air conditioner wasn’t needed.

Hi Jo,
you are so fast, great, you're the best 👍😀

Here it is hot and I have had a very busy day with no time for the Hive.

My L post was almost ready except of two or three sentences to my sixth word(s). When I clicked on the drafts on PeakD right before, I saw that my L draft was reset to the status of last weekend when I started it.

Now I am annoyed and think I'm going to make a ride instead of hiving. Maybe this will cool me down and motivate me to make the post tomorrow.

So, some votes and this reply will be all I do today 😉

Hi Johann,

I’m sorry about the mixup in scheduling your post. A nice ride might be just what you need.

I had the selections ready last night. It happened to be posted early because I was on the iPad when Barbara posted her L post. - it came up on my screen because I was among the winners (as you were) of the draw. Normally I would have to check her page to know.

Peppy was by this morning and he ate some cat food. I’ll give him your greetings Johann.😊 A slight smell of skunk was in the air. ☁️Peppy must have let off a small stink bomb for the raccoon or something else must have scared him last night. The smell dissipated quickly but if it was a full blast the smell would linger a few days. I don’t think a skunk likes to use all his spray unless necessary as it could take days for it to refill and it’s their only defence.

Thanks for taking time to rely and rehive the L post as you had a busy day.

I’ll be keeping an eye out for your post.🤗

yes, the ride was good and I calmed down a bit, but I am still upset and don't trust PeakD at the moment.

This morning is easier at the office and I have some minutes to make all the replies I didn't make yesterday.

Yes, you have been really fast and I have seen quite a few more L posts already. I'll have a quick look at all of them after my reply.

Peppy seems to be nice and smart - you should keep him as a guard 😉

I hope your night was cool as ours was hot, but for today they have predicted some rain and the weekend should be sunny again ☀️

Good Afternoon dear Johann. I’m happy today is easier. It is upsetting when things don’t go as you set them up. It was probably a glitch with Peakd. 🤫I haven’t used scheduling when I set up my drafts.

I’ve heard skunks make good pets. The sacs could be removed but I wouldn’t want to do that to Peppy. Two inside cats are enough to look after but I like having Peppy around outside. He does make a good guard. 😄

The sun is shining here this morning but it rained during the night. The nights have been cool which is a good thing for sleeping.

Good morning Jo :)

I said that in the morning, but then I didn't find any time until now. Never mind, shortly my weekend will begin and today our new kitten will join my family. So I don't think I'll have much time in the afternoon or tonight, but these are nice reasons 🙂

I haven't even scheduled the post, just made a draft and added photos and texts when I thought of something new. I was almost finished and then it was all gone 😭

I'd love to have such a guard if I had my own house - just imagine curious neighbors or thieves would only try to visit us once :)))

We have another hot and sunny day, but there are a few clouds on the sky and the weatherman says it will rain tomorrow. If he's right I have time to make my L post 😉

Oh I understand now- your whole draft is gone. I thought it was the scheduling that didn’t work.

That is disappointing and maddening. Don’t be too disheartened as you already have the ideas in your head to start a new post. I lost a draft one time because I never saved it.

You will be busy playing with the new kitten if you get a chance. 😀 I imagine everyone else in the family will want to hold the little furball. What will be the kitten’s name?

You are right about a pet skunk - people freak out when they see one and want to get rid of them. I get upset when I hear of a skunk being shot at because someone’s dog got sprayed or they are just afraid of them.

Today was 30C and I don’t know if it will cool down much tonight.

Yes, all is gone, the work of a whole week 😭😭😭
I was really upset because I always take care and save my drafts. But that's Murphy's Law - what can go wrong will go wrong 😉

Yesterday we had 31C, the night was warm but not too hot and now we have a nice cool morning 😀
If it rains today as predicted I'll make my #AlphabetHunt post, otherwise I will play with the kitten and go for a ride in the afternoon 🌞

The red one is called "Lil Pete" and the shy gray is named "Onyx".

The skunks should move to Austria where they would be safe, because only the police, the Army, Hunters and some more people are allowed to carry weapons. We have a very strict law and nobody would get shot just for being stinky 🤣

Yes, there is always the chance the drafts may get lost somehow. It is a mystery why your draft disappeared.

Those are cute names for the kittens. I’m looking forward to seeing a picture of them.

There are also strict rules here about weapons and who can have one. A course has to be passed before hunters can own a gun. I think it’s difficult to get a permit to have a gun and they are suppose to be in a locked cabinet when in the house. Even with all the restrictions some people are able to get their hands on a gun.

Yes, I have no idea, why that happened, but it did and today I try Esteem, but it's different to use.
Good thing about that: I made a shot on my ride on Thursday which I like and which I might use for the L 😁

They are cute and Onyx is still quite shy, but the Lil Pete seems to like his new home already 🙂

I forgot that you're in Canada and your rules and laws are certainly different from the ones in the US. Of course, here there are also more than enough people who have a gun, but who are not allowed to have one.

It's raining, better said since about midday we have a slight thunderstorm. The kitten sleep, my son is with his girlfriend, wife and daughter are shopping and I'm sitting at the computer for the first time since Thursday.

I used to use esteem but they changed the format and I can’t use the attached keyboard with it now. I put the keyboard on the wide side of the iPad but esteem app would only load on narrow side. It was too much of a hassle switching back and forth.

It’s just you and the kittens having a nice afternoon. ;)

It’s hot today with temperature around 30C. No rain in sight but maybe tonight.

Peppy is probably sleeping somewhere, keeping cool in the forest. He was by last night and had some cat food. I will have to take another video if he would do something funny instead of just chowing down like he’s starving.

I use it from time to time on my mobile phone, just as I did in the past few days, but I have never posted via Esteem. Today was the first time and maybe I'll try it for my next post too :)

It is still raining and the family is complete again. The kitten are awake and have fun playing and exploring our apartment. The most important thing is that they know where the toilet is 🤣

The animals suffer in such a heat and it's understandable that he sleeps somewhere where it's cooler until he gets hungry in the evening. Peppy likes your cat food and because you feed him he does not need to search his own food in the heat 😉

Pepe Le pew was a skunk in a cartoon. The skunks have a sweet face. Peppy is quite small and the only defence they have against predators is the spray. Once they use it, it takes a few days before they can spray again.

I might be the only person you will know who has a fondness for skunks.😁 I’ve smelled their spray in the air many times. If a skunk is killed on the road the smell stays for days.

Sometimes skunks just give off a little of the spray to warm predators to back away or they will get a full stinky blast if they don’t.

I forgot! I used to have two dogs called Peppy and Pepper when we were kids. I wondered where they had been reincarnated these days! Kind of missing childhood’s pets.

I also had a tiny dog named Pepper. He was a great pet and went missing one Christmas. I searched everywhere for him. I think someone picked him up as a gift for their children, thinking he was a young dog. I just hope he was taken care of.

Oh! No! I think Pepper was definitely stolen! I once saw my friend walking around the roads looking for his small shiatsu! It was stolen by someone on motorbike. I couldn’t believe that fowl act! He was crying inside all while walking and calling for his dog! At least the dog was looked after or sold off to someone else.

Cute little guy Jo who is very clever coming in your yard for food. I am thinking that skunk's spray must have quite a force when it goes from the back to the front. It was a good idea to position yourself on his side though just in case he gets spooked. Thanks for the video clip, quite an experience for an Australian to see a little skunk up close.

It’s quite a spray when the skunk lets go.😀 A skunk is pretty defenceless against predators except for the foul smelling spray. Once he sprays he has no protection until it builds up again in his anus sacs.

Entertaining to see who tame this skunk is and enjoy seeing him eating quietly not worried with you being there Jo.

We don't have skunks over here so this made interesting bit of learning about size and lovely GT stripes down the sides and one clear marking on the face.

I’m glad you enjoyed seeing little Peppy Joan. Many people dislike skunks because they can spray but they are not aggressive and will stamp their feet first to warn predators to back off.

It is interesting how different animals are in other parts of the world.❤️

Being online there are two animals I realize not everyone loves, or loves to hate, the racoon with gorgeous mask, and the skunk with GT stripes, I find both super cute in their oddities.

So true Joan. The little critters are just trying to stay alive. The raccoons can be mischievous and will even manage to survive in cities by raiding garbage cans and that gets everyone irate. The poor little skunk is dreaded as people are afraid of being sprayed.

Peppy is super adorable! Did you know some people have the skunk's sacs removed and keep them as pets? Supposedly they are friendly.
I too enjoy all of the wild creatures that live around my house and befriend them regularly!

Nina, I’ve heard a skunk makes a great pet. They are not aggressive and once the sacs are removed you don’t have to worry about them spraying. I wouldn’t want to do that to Peppy because, if he didn’t work out as a pet, his only defence in the wild is the ability to spray a foul smelling liquid at a predator.

I’m happy you enjoy the wild creatures too.

Now, now @sketch.and.jam, Peppy doesn’t stink.😀 He has not let off any spray yet. He’s not afraid of me and there are no dogs to chase him and cause him to spray. I find the little critter fastenating .
