Amazing Nature Contest #02: BEES

avatar
(Edited)

Don't we all love bees? Well... not everyone.

There is something comforting about seeing bees buzz from flower to flower. It tells me that nature is going on nicely in the background!

Bees are not all about honey.

Wild bees (and the bees in hives that I see all over the farms around here) pollinate the plants that produce a huge range of food! And even when other insects like beetles and butterflies contribute to the work of pollination, most of the work is done by the bees!

Bees are attracted to all the different flower types and colors: yellows, oranges...

reds...

purples...

and pinks!

While honey bees are social, live in hives, and cooperate with one another, most of our native bees are solitary, live in wood or underground tunnels, and do not make honey. The hard-working females mate, make nests, collect pollen for their young, and lay eggs. Males live to mate and only pollinate inadvertently when they visit flowers for nectar to fuel their flight. Native bees come in various shapes and sizes from the somewhat intimidating Valley carpenter bee at one inch long (sometimes more) to tiny sweat bees that are less than one-quarter inch. They also vary in color, shape, markings on their faces and legs, distribution of hairs on their bodies; and other features that may require a magnifying glass to be seen. Native bees differ in the seasons they appear, habitats they prefer, and flowers they favor.

Bees are truly amazing! They might seem to be something to be afraid of (because they could sting), but bees are an important part of our world. Without bees, we might not have flowers, fruits, vegetables, and other plants.

It's the killer bees! (SNL) lol.

Hahaha...

Although some even believe that the killer bee's venom is more potent than that of a honey bee, this is not the case. Killer bees are dangerous because they are much more aggressive, and they will chase their victims for great distances before giving up on their pursuit.
And they attack in swarms! Don't worry @ksteem! I'll protect you! 🥰🌺🤙 !ENGAGE

lol, I just love that SNL skit. Old school, but I've been quoting it an laughing for what 20-25 years now? Holy cow. What a classic. Jeez, 1976, 30 years. How do we get this old? Still feel like barely out of high school!

Bees are very important to our existence! It is so true that without them to pollinate, our food supply would be in trouble. They are interesting little insects! Take care!🤗💞😘🌸

That s why I appreciate them so.
WHich remind me of the honey festival...
gosh... will it be canceled again this year?

I know our county is planning on our fair which is usually the second week in August, to be 2 weeks long this time instead of the normal one (trying to make up for lost profits, me thinks). But like you, I wonder if this too will be cancelled again. I don't see this virus improving; it's at an all time high for the moment. Little as you think about it, summer is literally just around the corner, and all too soon, towns will be faced with these decisions. I suppose time will tell. Take care sis!

Yes the bees are so very important my friend, you are so correct that we would not have so many flowers, and crops that depend on pollination without them...😍😍😀

It is amazing how a tiny insect can be responsible for the pollination of the majority of fruits! And the flowers!!!
It will be a different world without them!

@silversaver888, I was stung by a bee as a kid, but I still love bees. I was playing in a wagon filled with water with my siblings and somehow the bee got wet?? I have never been afraid of bees, just always loved watching them on flowers. I grow clover in my backyard and I get really close to take photos of them. Wasps are a whole other subject! I stay far away from them!! Do you use html code to animate your still shots above or are they short videos?

Wasp!!! I stay away from them, hehehe.
I could watch the bees for hours, that is why I have a ready gif of bees.
I use a gif program and then the HTML code to post, @goodmemories!

Bees ^^ .. probably our most important insects on the whole planet ! .. I recently encountered that their population slightly recovered a little ;) .. I just hope that we can still return the trend and stop their extinction before it is to late .. I read several articles where most pollination in Asia is already done by humans with pollination stick ^^ .. human bees 😂

Hello @adalger!
It's a pleasure to have you here.
The ecosystem is complicated. Bees die because of pesticides, and I guess some are making up for it by helping the bees😂. Ony certain fruit trees can be pollinated that way.
Let us hope that the bee population will vibrant always!
Thank you for your comment!

I will stay optimistic until, hopefully nit, one day I will be ptived wrong .. All over the world children went onto the streets already to demonstrate already .. Unfortunately, I hate them for this, most politicians just laughed on them 😢 .. But one day, when the bext generation will take over, hopefully everything will change to a better 😉 .. Our bees are not only super fascinating, but soooooo important.. A lot of little changes could grow into a bug one too ^^

Awesome! Did you make these moving images? very beautiful! Furthermore, it must have been difficult to photograph the bees on the different colored flowers. My favorite animated image is that of purple flowers.
