¿Tienes retazos de telas guardados, que sobraron de algo que hayas hecho?

¿Una cortina, un vestido, un pantalón que ya no uses, pero sientes especial cariño por ellos y no te atreves a echarlos a la basura o regalarlos a alguien que los necesite?

Como muchos saben, me gusta mucho el tema del reciclaje y la decoración y desde niña, cuando leía los cuentos infantiles, recuerdo que en muchas de las ilustraciones, se veía una manta hecha de retazos y siempre quise hacer una. Incluso, le decía a mi mamá para hacer una y su respuesta siempre fue que eso requería de mucho trabajo para realizar.

Y con el tema de la cuarentena, hemos podido llevar a cabo muchos proyectos que teníamos postergados y desde hace unos meses, he venido cortando retazos de telas que han representado momentos importantes en mi vida.

Do you have scraps of fabric saved, left over from something you've made?

A curtain, a dress, a pair of pants that you no longer use, but you feel special affection for them and you don't dare to throw them away or give them to someone who needs them?

As many of you know, I love recycling and decorating and since I was a little girl, when I read children's stories, I remember that in many of the illustrations, you could see a blanket made of scraps and I always wanted to make one. I would even ask my mother to make one and her answer was always that it would require a lot of work.

And with the issue of quarantine, we have been able to carry out many projects that we had postponed and for a few months now, I have been cutting fabric scraps that have represented important moments in my life.

Cada uno de los retazos cortados, representa un bonito recuerdo para mi y decidí embarcarme en este proyecto, sin ninguna expectativa, a ver si podía hacerlo y me dispuse a buscar esas telas que tenía guardadas en bolsas, en la parte de arriba del clóset de atrás y a recortar cuadritos en mis ratos libres.

Luego de recortar todos estos trozos, le pregunté a mi hermana, cómo coserlos y ella me dio las indicaciones.

Ella estaba encantada por esta iniciativa mía, por lo que le me dio algunas telas que de una u otra forma, han sido importantes o han representado momentos importantes en nuestras vidas, como la sábana de mi primera sobrinita, cortinas que había hecho mi madre, vestidos de cuando yo era pequeña, en fin...

Each of the cut scraps represents a beautiful memory for me and I decided to embark on this project, without any expectations, to see if I could do it and I set out to find those fabrics that I had stored in bags in the top of the back closet and cut out squares in my spare time.

After cutting out all these pieces, I asked my sister how to sew them and she gave me the instructions.

She was delighted by this initiative of mine, so she gave me some fabrics that in one way or another, have been important or have represented important moments in our lives, as the sheet of my first niece, curtains that my mother had made, dresses when I was little, in short....

Bueno, en primer logar lo que hice, fue como mencioné más arriba, es recolectar esas telas que tenía guardadas.

Las corté en cuadritos de igual tamaño. Fueron muchos. La verdad es que no llevé un conteo de cuántos cuadritos corté.

Cada uno los iba uniendo con alfileres, para después pasarlos por la máquina de coser.

Well, first of all, what I did, as I mentioned above, was to collect those fabrics that I had in storage.

I cut them into squares of equal size. There were a lot of them. I didn't really keep a count of how many squares I cut.

I pinned each one together and then put them through the sewing machine.

Con la máquina de coser fue un poco más fácil que el trabajo a mano.

Una vez que tuve todos los pedazos de tela cosidos, tomé un edredón viejo para coserlo por debajo, a manera de reforzar lo que había hecho.

Como dije, lo hice en mis ratos libres y quizás por ello, me tomó casi tres meses hacerlo por completo.

Me siento satisfecha por el resultado final, porque para ser mi primera vez, me quedó bastante bien.

With the sewing machine it was a little easier than working by hand.

Once I had all the fabric pieces sewn together, I took an old quilt to sew underneath to reinforce what I had done.

As I said, I did it in my spare time and perhaps because of that, it took me almost three months to do it completely.

I feel satisfied with the final result, because for my first time, it turned out quite well.

Habiendo hecho este trabajo durante todos estos meses, puedo decir que definitivamente, puedo hacer lo que me proponga, que los límites están solo en mi mente.

Having done this work for all these months, I can definitely say that I can do whatever I set my mind to, that the limits are only in my mind.

Así luce ahora mi cama. Me sobró tela y pude forrar los tres cojines que están sobre las almohadas.

This is what my bed looks like now. I had fabric left over and was able to line the three cushions that are on top of the pillows.
