Happy start of the week to all my Holos friends, sadness is a feeling of which we all have been, are or will be touched at some point in our lives, being brave to get out of it is the difficult thing, that is why when I read the initiative of @gsbilbao I wish I could share with you not only my experience with sadness but how I did and still do to overcome it.

Last week I commented in a blog in this same community, https://peakd.com/hive-131951/@gladymar1973/aceptar-los-cambios-or-or, about a situation that I am suffering and putting into practice what I learned, is what is helping me every day to let the limitations caused by my health take control of my mood, even when my body often limits me to do the usual work, I mentalize myself in what I can do to not give room for sadness.

Eighteen months ago I went through an episode of sadness from which I was a step away from falling into depression, I remember that at that time I had no appetite and they forced me to eat and that was only small bites, in those days I did not want to talk to anyone, my cell phone was about to collapse by the amount of messages sent, nothing was important only the pain for the loss of my mother and the nostalgia that left her absence was what emptied my life.

One of those days when I did not even want to hear a bird sing, a very dear friend insisted me in a phone call and for which I will be eternally grateful, he recommended me a book of which he sent me the link and that today I already have in physical, that day he recommended me a specific topic precisely.

"Understanding sadness and depression" as I was reading I found a part that caught my attention and it was the stages of grief: denial, anger, negotiation, sadness and acceptance. Reading each of those stages over and over again was what helped in part to get me to let go of my mother and know that it was only a brief goodbye.

Recently, together with a group of friends I studied this manual in a workshop on Emotional Resilience and as part of one of the assignments of one of the topics covered in the workshop we were suggested to write a letter to our inner self for something that caused us pain or guilt, in this workshop I understood that I am prone to suffer from sadness and that is why the letter I wrote to myself was precisely on this topic.

Suggestions for my sad and difficult days:

Dear Gladys I want you to remember this every time you feel sad or helpless:

  • First remember that you are a priceless daughter of God. Remembering who I am helps me to have the strength to seek spiritual help and guidance to overcome my challenges, reminds me that God will not give me a trial that I cannot overcome and above all that He will always be by my side.

  • Second close your eyes and visualize the most pleasant place for you and when you are there, go to the Lord and leave on Him all that burden you are carrying, tell Him your sorrows and let His love surround you, stay there until you feel better, breathing deeply and slowly, fill yourself with all His goodness and mercy, when you feel ready open your eyes and give yourself a smile and a big hug.

My places of escape are my chapel which I can go to whenever I need it and then there is our Temple that because of its location we go once a month, but visualizing that I am inside its walls I can feel protected, in both places I feel the peace I need to be able to find that guide that will help me get the necessary tools to focus my ideas and put my mind on the things I can do, avoiding that the things I can do rob me of my peace.

  • Third, go to a place where you can dedicate some time to take a deep breath and contemplate nature, take a walk or do some tai chi exercises, energize your whole body.

When my mother died, little by little I went for short walks near my house, often with my family we went hiking in the mountains on Saturdays, then one day I decided to go to one of the parks designed by the municipal government, there I found a group of friends who helped me to learn Tai chi, at first it was difficult to keep in control the body, mind and breathing, after a few months I managed to achieve this balance helps me to focus my mind positively.

  • Fourth, visit a friend and give him/her some of your time, forgetting about your afflictions and helping others will help you too.

This is something that takes me out of my comfort zone, as I am very much at home, but putting this into practice has helped me to put others first and let my challenges take a back seat, for that time I dedicate myself to listen to them, share stories or remember old times, if it is necessary to do some work it is done and at the end I see how the day goes by without letting my feelings or thoughts prevent me from moving forward.

  • And lastly remember that this too shall pass.....

Certainly something I have learned is that everything has its time, learning to enjoy each test has helped me to be stronger in the face of them, if I worry about my limitations I simply let the river take its course so to speak without letting the stones that drag me drag me.

Thank you for reading this far, I hope these simple and small suggestions can help you to overcome sadness, just as it is helping me again right now, because they do not make me immune to sadness but they help me to overcome it day by day. Take this opportunity to invite my dear friends @mariela07, @tommy27 and @jicrochet to tell us how they overcome sadness.

I'm so sorry for your loss, but also glad you were able to move on from your grief. I'm sure your mother would never have wanted for you to be stuck with such grief forever.
