Faced with this question, many would say they prefer to stay on the shore, gaze at the horizon, enjoy the sand beneath their feet and the tranquillity; yes, that static tranquillity that acts like a magnet, anchoring us to that sand which lets our feet sink without resistance or objection.
But there are others among us – the unwary or the adventurous, perhaps a little too intrepid – who, without even knowing how to swim, throw ourselves into the water. The water that, close to the shore, looks so calm, with the white foam rising and falling, ebbing and flowing, in a hypnotic rhythm.
Once in the water—which is no longer lukewarm and grows colder the further out we go—we realise that the fury of its waves tosses us from left to right, submerges us and leaves us floating, flailing, frightened, alone and helpless, with nothing nearby to hold on to.
If you recognise this analogy, that’s exactly what difficulties are like: nobody else wants them; we prefer that shore. And when these setbacks arrive—to put it more gently—many prefer to turn a deaf ear by putting on headphones and turning the volume up to the max, even though it might damage their own ears, because it’s easier to try to silence the world than to face what’s coming.
On the other hand, however, there are those who throw themselves in; they are lifeguards who cannot swim, with no boat or surfboard. Through sheer will and strength, we take strokes, moving backwards, moving forwards and, every now and then, sinking and resurfacing on the other side. And that’s just how life is: one day we’re at point A and the next we’re at point X, and when we look around to find nothing familiar, we have no choice but to think quickly, dispassionately, and gather the information we need to keep paddling.

Problems, then, as I’ve said on other occasions, aren’t just financial ones. And although this is one that often causes headaches, there are others that are worse, including health, which is everything compared to money; because there may be plenty of the latter, but when health plays tricks on us and tries to throw us a spanner in the works, we must act quickly, and this is where the money we once wanted so much now becomes noticeably less important.
Looking a little further ahead, there are also natural disasters; the earth gives and takes away, shaking us from side to side, destroying, tearing down, driving us apart and leaving us bewildered. And if a family used to consist of four, we must pray that it stays that way, because all too often this number shrinks, leaving more pain in its wake.
That is where we must venture into that sea and run hard along the shore until we leap into its waters, because it is by facing the dilemma, problem, vicissitude, setback, disaster – or whatever you wish to call it – that we will truly find the ways to escape that state, to seek the help we cannot find on the shore. And there’s one thing I can say for certain: “In those waters, we’re never alone, and amongst those of us who’ve found ourselves shipwrecked of our own accord, every now and then we help one another.”

I threw myself into the sea without knowing how to swim, and although the process is tough, exhausting and I’ve often felt as though I were drowning, I keep swimming, paddling and, every now and then, simply floating, until at last the storm subsides and reveals the rays of sunshine hidden behind its grey clouds.

Me contento leerte.
Probar no cuesta nada.
