How to upgrade your deck to the next level in Splinterlands

One of the trickiest things in Splinterlands is to actually upgrade your deck. Every card that is in the game can be upgraded by combining several cards of the same type to create a more powerful card.

The number of cards necessary will vary according to the rarity of a card and also according to the edition of a card.

Why upgrading cards has to be planned well

If you have several cards of the same type you can easily combine them but this doesn't mean that you will be able to play this upgraded card! There are some limits built into the game that are important to be aware of.

Limited by the league that you play in

Every league has what is called a summoner cap. This is a cap of what level of cards are allowed to be played in a certain league. For example in novice league you can only play level 1 cards. In bronze you can already play level 3 common, level 2 rare and epic and level 1 legendary cards. If you are in novice there is doesn't bring anything to upgrade your cards.

Limited by your summoners

Another important fact is that you can only play an upgraded card if you have a summoner capable of playing it. A rare summoner of level 1 will only allow you to play level 1 cards. To be able to play more powerful cards, you will first need to upgrade your summoners!

How to upgrade your deck

Because of these limits, Splinterlands doesn't offer a shortcut to the top! Therefore you have to grow your deck slowly but surely and get better at the game. The first step is to upgrade the summoner of one splinter and then upgrade the cards of this splinter in the range of this summoner. Once you are fine with this splinter, you can start to upgrade another splinter. These upgraded splinters will then allow you to reach the next levels and you can then think to upgrade your summoner to the next level.

It's a slow process and it's important not to waste money in trying to jump forward. The game will prevent you from doing so and you will have blocked money that should have been used differently.

You are right. It is a strategic card game.

It's tough to figure how to go forward but I tend to limited by my summoner. I should of probably leveled them up back when prices were cheaper.

Leveling up summoners is probably the most difficult feat in the game. Especially that there are no new summoners in the reward cards. The only way to upgrade a summoner is by buying the expensive ones on the market.

It's important what you said at the end. One CAN actually play an upgraded card, even in a lower league or with a summoner that's not upgraded enough. But the card level WILL BE LIMITED by the max level of the league or the max level of the summoner.

So you are right, the upgrade should be gradual and it should start with summoners first. And not above the limitations of your current league.

There is of course the approach of buying/renting upgraded cards and moving up the leagues quickly. But that requires a higher learning curve, skill and investment.

Personally, I used the slow-and-steady method at first and then I punctually started to invest in more/better cards I needed to move higher in the leagues and stay there.

I think that a lot of newbies are a bit frustrated by the slow and steady approach and they want to "jump" in the game just to realize that even with renting more powerful cards, it doesn't necessarily work.

Well, they don't realize the game is around since 2018 and many of us early birds have been around since about then and we've grinded a lot since then to be where we are now.

But everyone starts from somewhere and has a chance to grow. They shouldn't always compare with earlier players, and the new formats might help keep things a little bit separated.
