Blessings of the Godfather

IMG20221217170406.jpg

When my first nephew on my wife's side of the family was born, I was lucky enough to be named his godfather. This was a totally new experience for me. It's interesting how different cultures and religions place such an emphasis on this position.

Being neither Catholic or Italian, I have a feeling the significance was lost a little bit on me. That isn't to say, I wasn't honored, but I feel like I didn't fully understand the expectations or responsibilities there may have been attached to it.

I did have to attend some classes at the local Catholic where he was being baptized. I also had to do some other things too if I remember right. It was about ten years ago now, so I honestly don't remember.

When he was younger, I tried to give a little extra each year to his college fund. I a bit ashamed to admit, I have kind of fallen out of that habit the past couple of years.

This year I decided to change that. I thought what better way to give him something special than to give him the gift of silver. When he came camping with us this past summer he surprised me by picking out a copper cube as one of his souvenirs.

It was in that moment that I realized I needed to get him started early in the silver stacking game. I jumped over to APMEX and started looking around. I was hoping to find something with an NFL or military theme that was in my price range. Sadly, I wasn't able to find anything.

I know there are other sites out there, but I have done business with APMEX in the past so I was confident with their ability to send me quality merchandise in a timely manner.

I was immediately taken with the Bitcoin silver round that you see in the intro.

Around the outer edge it says: Bitcoin . Digital . Decentralized . Peer to Peer . Bitpay . 1oz . .999 fine silver . vire in numeris (I think). On the back side is the picture that you see above. It has a ridged edge like an American Quarter would have.

It is pretty awesome actually and I have to admit that when I saw it I decided to keep this for myself and pulled one of my own 1 oz silver bars to give to my nephew.

I don't have a picture, but the bar I selected has an American Flag on one side and then on the other side it simply says APMEX or something like that. It is pretty simple, but I think he will get a kick out of it.

Apparently, my purchase qualified me to be part of some club. I am sure many of you are already members of this. I know most of you are more avid stackers than I am. I'll have to login sometime and see what kind of benefits I get from being a member.

They also sent me this foamy fake gold bar that I am going to give to him. Knowing him, he will likely have it destroyed within a day, but it was a freebie so I guess it doesn't really matter.

I honestly kind of like it when businesses send bonus stuff like this to you. I have a couple of big vendors that do the same thing. It probably doesn't cost them much of anything, but it always brings a smile to my face. Hopefully my nephew get some joy out of it as well.

I actually think it is kind of smart. There is going to be a huge temptation for him to pull the silver out of the packaging and play with it. This should give him something to get his hands on while leaving the silver intact.

I also decided to buy two 1oz silver bars off the secondary market from APMEX. Basically, you pay them something like $29 (in my case) and they look through their random stock of bars and they send you a couple.

It's a surprise because you are never quite sure what you are going to get. You might get something really common, then again you might get something really unique that holds more value than just the silver content alone.

In my case, I got two of these bars from Heraeus. Heraeus is a precious metal company. I have never heard of them before, but I am sure many of you are quite familiar with them.

I've decided that I am going to keep one of these for myself and give the other one to my nephew. I think between this and the American Flag piece I am going to give him, that should whet his appetite for stacking more silver. Plus I can always buy him more down the road if he is really receptive to it.

Heraeus is a German Company and the picture above seems to be referencing the town of Hanau which is the center of the German jewelry trade. At least according to Google. I am guessing it could also be where Heraeus is based. Don't quote me on that though!

In all, I am pretty happy with this haul. My first batch of silver I bought a year or two ago I used BTC to pay for it. This time I used my VISA card. I spent about $100 total and I had to pay just shy of $10 for shipping. If had had bought a bigger quantity I could have gotten shipping for free.

I don't really mind though, I wasn't in a place where I was ready to spend the amount needed to get free shipping.

I really hope my nephew likes this gift. It would be awesome to make some silver a reoccurring present for him each Christmas.

Great gift, I quite fancy one of those bitcoin silver rounds too.

Hanau is not far from me, I think I was only there for one of my daughter's regional championships though.

Oh wow, that is really cool! How exciting that it is so close to you! I really like the BTC coin too. It wasn't that hard of a choice to decide to keep it for myself! It was a good price too, only something like $28 USD.

The bitcoin silver coin is looking quite finely designed.

That foam bar deceived me for a while and I was like ooooo! How much gold. Hehehe.

I am sure your nephew would love your gift.
I have a question though. What makes you a godfather? I mean on what basis someone given this title and what in return the person is supposed to do?

My wife was confused by the gold bar too. She said "is it okay for you to be touching it like that". I had to explain to her that it was foam. I think back in the day, the idea of a godparent was that they would take over for the other parents if they were to pass unexpectedly. I think these days it is just more of a honorary type thing. Though the Catholics may require it. I am not sure.

I see. It means it is a religious tradition

I love the silver crypto themed rounds. I have one minted by Silver Shield that is a heafty 2oz.
My favorite is one called the "Bitcoin guardian" minted by Anonymous Mint.
Nice score and a great gift Bozz!

Thanks, I appreciate it. I'd love to get some 2oz pieces in the future. There is just something about holding the weight in your hand I think.

Yeah, they change their stuff up regularly too, so if you don't see something now you want to buy, you should check back later. When I first started looking those crypto coins weren't even available.

What a cool godfather you are!
I think over here, the position of godparent was something that was done, but unless the child was orphaned nothing was done by the godparent.

Yeah, I think that is kind of how it used to be here too, but now it just doesn't happen as much. I could be wrong. I am hoping I can end up making this a regular thing for him. He might not fully appreciate it now, but one day he might.

Awesome score for both of you!!! You never know what you're going to get from secondary but you made out with some excellent pieces. Start them stacking young for sure.

Yeah, I was hoping for something with a little more flair, but silver is silver, so I can't really complain too much. It is the risk I take for paying the lower secondary market price I guess!

That Heraeus Bar is good quality and the Bitcoin round was bringing a decent premium during the bull run.

I think that is a nice gift for your nephew. The BTC coin is especially nice I like the entire circuit design of the coin.

Yeah, I thought that part was pretty cool too. If they keep them around I might end up buying one of each.

Apmex has many good coins. The silver 1 oz are great, but premiums still bit expensive !

I don't have this Bitcoin round yet but I do have the Japanese Satori poker chip with 0.001 BTC in it. I know there is a silver Litecoin, Ethereum and Dogecoin out there too. So will you try to get a set?

I don't think I could ever bring myself to pick up anything Doge related. I might grab the LTC and ETH ones though. I should probably eventually buy another BTC one for my nephew and actually give it to him instead of keeping it for myself!
