A Special Coin Set

Today's post is a special set I found back in 2014 at a local coin shop. The set contains four 2oz coins made from pure silver refined to a millesmal purity of 999 parts silver in 1,000, for a total of eight ounces.

A maximum of 1,500 of these sets were issued by The Perth Mint. I was unable to find out what the declared mintage was for this set. If anyone has this information, please share in the comments below.

The Case

When you take the set out of its outer box, the coins are presented in a quality dark grey case. The Australian Coat of Arms is printed on the case, with the words THE AUSTRALIAN KOOKABURRA and Privy Marked 2oz Silver Coins printed below.

The case has a quality feel in the hand and you can feel the weight from the coins inside which makes you want to clip open the button and see what is inside.

2oz Silver Proof Kookaburra Coins with Privy Mark

The top two coins in the set are proof quality coins with a mirror finish background. The P100 on the coins is to celebrate a century of minting excellence by The Perth Mint. The date on each coin is 1999, however the coin design is actually the year 2000 bullion coin design.

Each of the proof coins has a different privy mark:

  • The coin on the left has an Australian Penny privy mark.
  • The coin on the right has an Australian Florin privy mark.

2oz Silver Bullion Kookaburra Coins with Privy Mark

The bottom two coins in the set are bullion quality coins with a matte background. The date on each coin is 1999, and the coin design is the year 1999 bullion coin design.

Each of the bullion coins has a different privy mark:

  • The coin on the left has a Shilling privy mark.
  • The coin on the right has a Half Australian Penny privy mark.

I think it as quite clever and appropriate to use the Pre-deciamls as Privy marks for this coin set. It does give the product more a historical context.

Thanks for Sharing @strenue 😎

Yes Privy Marks on coins are quite polarising. Some people just do not like them at all. I on the other hand quite like them, especially these ones with the pre-decimals. I have a very wide selection of tastes when it comes to silver.

Love the coins!
Privy marks is a smart way to sell more coins of the same general designs, hahaha!
