[Opinion] Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory - Demo Release

If you saw my posts from last year you might've noticed I'm a big Kingdom Hearts fan! Played a version the main games and know the story of every title I haven't played. My latest experience with the franchise was watching a Let's Play of Re:Mind DLC on YouTube months ago!

I'm glad I watched it, because the next game in the franchise is a follow up to to Re:Mind story which is an epilogue to the base Kingdom Hearts III game.

Memory of Melody, is the upcoming rhythm game that retells the events of the previous Kingdom Hearts games. This Nintendo Switch title will serve as a link to the next entry in the series . The game would start right after the ending of Re:Mind which by default spoils the ending of the pricey KHIII's DLC. I think those who only played the base KHIII might get lost at first.

Kairi is the main character/narrator in Melody of Memory! But she's not the playable character. Another version of Sora will take that role. (Again!) I know many fans hate Kairi, but I think with how the story was going, she it was too hard to give her the role we all wanted. I'm glad that she at least got this game now, though I hope she's better-written this time.

The Demo was released worldwide two days ago (14th of October 2020.) I was quite surprised. I thought it'll be closer to the games release than this, but I want to play it as soon as possible and form an opinion, because at the moment I don't want to buy/play the full game!

To be fair, I don't like playing Rhythm games! I never played one for more than half-an-hour. The trailer didn't get me hyped, but I still want to give Melody of Memory a chance, by playing the Demo. (It seems to be a small download size.) Depending on how it goes I might skip this entry of Kingdom Hearts altogether. Although, I'll probably watch the cut-scenes on YouTube.

It seems that this rhythm game won't advance the story by much if at all, but it will feature hints about Master of Masters, and also events about the past of Destiny Island Trio, which we never saw before. (Sora, Riku and Kairi's childhood.) I'm interested in this despite myself.

I want to believe that the actual experience of the gameplay would be better than seeing it on the trailer, but I was disappointed many times by Square Enix to bother keeping hopes up.

What do you think?

Are you fan of Kingdom Hearts? What do you think of this new game? A rhythm game was unexpected, but ultimately not a strange thing after all of what Kingdom Hearts series have done. I don't know what to make of that.

Was hoping this game would be a good one to introduce me to the series through nintendo, then I scratched it off my wishlist because I realized the gameplay was not an RPG. Enix, especially knows how to make good RPG's, so they really let me down for expectations.

Now I need to watch for reviews on the two Prinny games released. If they are at least funny enough to keep me smiling, I'll maybe buy it.

Well, I do think MoM will be a bad representation of the other Kingdom Hearts games from the fact that it's a rhythm game alone.

Wished they released at least Kingdom Hearts 1 before it on Switch, many old fans will buy it! (KH1 in handheld, who wouldn't?) and it would've introduced a whole new set of audience to the franchise. This game might do it, but to a far less extent.
