God of war review: Loved it but there's a "but"

God of war is the baby of Sony and one of the highest selling games of all time. It's a playstation exclusive and has millions (maybe billions) of fans worldwide.

Prior to this PS4 version, I had actually played the game on both PS3 and PS2. However, this one promised to stretch the capacity of a Playstation 4 and that's frankly what if offered.

The storyline

Unlike previous editions where Kratos relied on his trusty badass sword, this time he heavily relied on a battle axe.

Also, unlike the past where his swords rained fire on foes, the battle axe was imbued with frost magic. The axe was a memento from his wife who was a giant.

According to myths and legends or marvel universe, the giants use frost magic. So it was no surprise to me when I found out that Faye was a giant.

Also, it was rather interesting that Atreus turned out to be Loki. Assuming we go by the general theme of this story, isn't he going to be adopted by Odin?

Anyway, unlike MCU though, Thor and Odin are presented as bloodthirsty assholes that just craving for a fight.

Anyway, the story followed the journey of Kratos and Artreus into Jouteinheim, the land of the Giants. The plan was to get to the peak and spread the ashes of Faye, the wife of Kratos.

Just as you'd expect it, nothing is ever straightforward in the life of Kratos. That simple task sent him and his son on adventure that went deep into Norse mythology.

A different Kratos

I think the most notable change in this game, especially when compared to previous others is the fact that we got to see a completely different side of Kratos.

Naturally, he still retained his brute and violent abilities but his actions were more calculated and didn't come from anger.

His usual fiery temper was replaced by a wild old sage who constantly advices his son. At the end, we find that the experience actually brought the two characters together and strengthened the bond between them.

The gameplay

I'm not much into the tech stuff of the game, so I can't comment too much on the gameplay. However, I can comment on my experience.

On the plus side, it felt like a high effort game, with brilliant designs and attention to details.

I played mine on a 1080p screen throughout but it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. The game had many picturesque scenes and sometimes, the cinematic interludes could suck you into the storyline like it's a movie you're watching.

I think my only problem with the game was the fact that I had to fight with R1 and R2 on the controller. For a racing or first person shooter, it makes sense. It for a combat game like this, not so good.

At the end of the game, those buttons in my controller stated feeling worn out. I think going back to using ∆ and "square" would be better for heavy and light attacks respectively.

Ragnarok is coming

At the end of the day, the game set the tone for a sequel that was originally suppose to come out this year but will be out early next year.

At the end of the adventure, there were more questions than answers. However, a lot of those answers will be answered in Ragnarok and maybe we could even see a flashback that shows Faye's face.

One of the best games I’ve played in a long time. I didn’t play it until late last year when I first got my PS5. It was so worth my 40 hours I spent with it to get 100%. That final Valkyrie battle was soooo hard.

Man those Valkyrie are tough as hell. I managed to release three before giving up. Way too much stress man.

It really was, I got so pissed that I had to take an entire day off from playing before I started back up and tried again. I was determined to get that platinum trophy though, and thank goodness I finally did.

After the third Valkyrie, I got so bummed out, I just left it. Didn't even know about the platinum trophy or anything else. Wanted to finish the campaign and find out the rest of the story before I spoil it for myself by reading too much stuff.

Meanwhile, I've downloaded COD Vanguard Beta. The people there play like monsters. The anxiety I get from being randomly shot in that game is something else 😆.

Man PS5 is on my to buy list but I'm going to wait until they've totally stopped making games for PS4, which I presume will be someway down the line.

Also, Ragnarok comes out next year.

I stopped playing this game about a third of the way through. Too much backtracking got me frustrated. But hopefully before the sequel comes out I will start playing it again and finishing.

From God of War the last thing I played was 3, but I'm surprised you didn't dig in when talking about the gameplay of this game, it has good content to comment on and things to do, but still good post.

Gameplay was pretty standard for a flagship game. Campaign boss fights were easier than side mission.

Also, unlike God of war 3, they gave this one a sort of open world feel, as there were side missions, resources to pick up, crafting of weapons and stuff like that.

Mythological lore aside, I liked this title a lot more.

It showed Kratos in a very different light. Instead of an angry man on a kill quest, he's someone with retrospect and probably regretted a lot of stuff he'd done. At least, the fiery approach anyways. That's demonstrated in the way he treated his own son.

Remember that part where he scolded Artreus for stabbing Thor's already mortally wounded son? I almost got emotional watching it.

Yeah, that part revealed a lot without saying much.

I think one of the things that made this game so successful was its story, how a Greek God is involved with Asgardian gods is amazing and never thought, besides that it is a difficult game, which tests those who are made call real gamers

The puzzles are difficult but that's expected from a God of war game.

I heard they'll be going to Egypt after Ragnarok

It would be great to continue that plot of crossing mythologies
