Hey Hive Gaming community!

This my entry for the Hive Gaming Community Contest, if you want to participate I invite you to read this post. I have a lot of fond gaming memories and I want to share one about Donkey Kong Country.

I invite you to listen to this music while you read the post:

I was born in 1987, I'm the youngest of all my cousins and I have an older brother. I've been playing video games since I was about three or four years old, I don't remember why I started playing but I know I've always loved video games, they have been a great part of my life. Growing up I played a lot of video games with my older brother Jorge and my cousin Andy (they are almost the same age). We spent many weekends playing all sorts of games: Street Fighter, Final Fantasy, Super Mario Bros, Battle Toads, Resident Evil, Harvest Moon, Tony Hawk, and more. I remember that I once said that my favorite cousins were Andy and Pablo (the eldest of my cousins) just because they had a SNES, I was just kid lol.

My parents were not into video games but they supported our hobby so every once in a while they made an effort to buy us a console or game. What we used to do was to exchange the old consoles for new ones. The only time that I saw my father playing videogames was with Dr. Mario, he amazed me and my brother because he was able to beat level 99 of the game, but he stopped playing because his eyes turned red every time.

One of the games that we used to play in Super Nintendo back in the day was Donkey Kong Country. It was a very fun game for us and the great thing about it is that there was multiplayer. One of the players controlled DK and the other controlled Diddy Kong, it was not possible to do it at the same time but it was fun. In this game, we saw a villain turn into a hero. It was the start of a great series of games.

The memory that I want to share is this one:

As I was the youngest, my brother and my cousin sometimes teamed up to bully me, it was not something serious and I think that many of the times I deserved it because I also bothered them and drove them crazy.

On the first Donkey Kong Country, there were special levels, like bonus stages where you could win golden animal trophies that as far as I remember could be used as mounts (like the rino that Diddy is mounting on the main image). To win those animal mounts you had to jump and at precise times to choose the animal that you wanted, you had to do this three times and get the same animal in all three. It was not very hard to do because it was slow, but one time my brother and cousin turned off the TV just when I was doing that bonus/secret level and I still managed to get three of the same animals. I was very excited because for me it was a great deed. I left them with a surprise in their faces.

Here is a complete walkthrough that I found on YouTube. At the beginning at the minute 1:45, you can see what I'm talking about.

I have more gaming memories, many are from my teenage years where I used to do LAN parties with my high school friends and we play Halo all night. Some memories are more recent, for almost two and a half years I played Overwatch with a group of friends, that kinda ended when I started blogging here.

Well, that is all for today's post, remember that if you want to participate check out the @hivegc post that I shared in the beginning of the post. Cheers!

Hello friend @eddiespino: thank you for sharing with our community such beautiful memories of your childhood. From what you say, I immediately came to mind (and I hope you are not offended) a nerdy little boy who was bullied by other children (due to her high intellectual abilities and her greater dexterity with controls). This should not bother you: as is obvious, most of the children (half nerd) of our childhood (at least of mine) are the ones who now rule the world. As for the popular Donkey Kong I can only tell you that in addition to many children who were filled with beautiful memories accompanying this charismatic character in his adventures; it is above all Nintendo and Mario who should be most grateful for their success.

LOL! Thank you for your comment! Yes, I was/am a nerd, I was very good in school because I have great memory, not very skilled in other things but I was/am good with computers and technology.

This is a photo of me as a boy:

I was not bullied in school but I was bullied a little by my brother and one of his friends, but it was never very serious.

Ok amigo.

I never knew about that secret level lol. I'm pretty sure I've played this game with friends way back. Even though I am a bit younger and started gaming during N64 times. I had a friend who had a huge SNES collection and this was one of his favorite games. Must have been a great feeling when you turned the TV back on 😄

Yes! I was like: "Take that!"

I also played a lot of N64 games, but I barely played Donkey King 64, I remember it requires an expansion pack in order to play, but a friend had it and I think he finished all the game.

To be honest, I never liked Donkey Kong.
Not because of the game itself. The game mechanics were actually quite fun. But because I cant stand monkeys. Including gorillas :D
I dont know why, maybe their behaviour or the sounds they make... nevermind.
Nice post though :)

Hahaha I understand you, it's like people that dislike cats or other animals. Growing up I played all sorts of games but at the moment I can't play any kind of sport or racing game, I prefer adventure RPG and that type.of games.

Holy moly I found my gamer soulmate xD. I was born in 1988 and played a lot of games with my cousins. It started with NES, then switched to SNES, N64, Playstaion 1 and then my console era ended and I switched to a computer. The Father of my cousin was a Dr. Mario Pro as well LOL.
But daaaamn, when I listened to your embedded DK music....INSTANT goosebumps. 🤣 Thanks for this good feeling mate.

Ohh you are welcome! We had a similar road. In this online gaming time I miss playing with friends/family side by side, nowadays is very rare for a game to have local multiplayer.

Glad you liked my post!

I can understand your love for Donkey Kong. I mean, I haven´t played Donkey Kong Country but I had the chance of playing Donkey Kong 64 when I was a kid and I loved it, also I could play Donkey Kong Country 3 on the GBA, great post!

Thank you! It was a difficult game for me though and nowadays I prefer other genres. I love RPGs or gams that have role-playing elements like Borderlands and of course Skyrim, Fallout, and Mass Effect.

Saludos.

Wow Donky Kong Country. I remember this game fondly as a kid. I remember being so impressed with how good it looked. The lush tropical backgrounds. I love anything tropical. Secretly envious of all the hive members that live in the tropics.

Hen i saw you mention battle toads. I used to play that game for hours. Recently tried playing it on a raspberry pi and i relearned something very important about that game. Its fricking hard.

I never knew of figured out the bonus animals. I just learned something.

Yes, Battle Toads was a hard game. As I mentioned in another comment of this contest nowadays kids would have a pretty hard time playing old games, they are very used to checkpoints. Before almost every game was like Dark Souls if you died and had to start over.

Thank you for your comment!

My favorite tidbit from the first game was the Blackout Basement stage.

You know, the one with the Fear Factory theme playing.

The beats of the music corresponded with the blackouts.

How come this post gets $48.89 and my post only got $0.20?

That seems a little of and very very depressing.....:(

Look at my post....Not even a dollar...after curation I will get 10 cents....

I am a huge fan of D.K but never played this one! My D.K journey started with a Nintendo64!

This one looks like a must-play. Gonna see if I can download any emulator and play it at my computer!

Thanks for the great post my friend!

Thank you!

Sure there should be a good SNES emulator to play this game, I haven't downloaded one recently but I made a quick Google search I found this one:

I have not seen all the video but I think it's a good tutorial or overview.

I have to say, the game looks really fun especially when you think about the game so many years ago. Not played this game before but from the look of things, it looks like a really fun game that i would have enjoyed back in the days. I used to enjoy game like this back in the days and i wished i had come across the game back then.

And I'm feeling dumb not to play this game.

Crazy another Overwatch player is so close. But no one does reviews or in-depth content anymore! I play with a couple I invited here, but I don't mention it much. I played Donkey Kong Country for the GameBoy Color. When I saw it was the theme for your post, I had to come check it out. This music's something else too. I didn't get very far, since the screen felt dark when playing DK Country. Still hooked on GBA games though.

I haven't played Overwatch in a while, the laptop that I just got is very fast for browsing and for doing all the work I need but it's now the best at running games. My goal is to buy a good gaming PC this December or sooner.

Do you play on PC? I have it on Xbox, I bought it there first but I have played the most on PC. I'm not very good, but it's fun!

Saludos.

I played a lot of Super Mario

It's a great game! It's similar to Mario Bros, but with a different twist, I had a blast playing it with my brother and cousin. Good thing we can play it now using an emulator, maybe I'll do a video about it.
