Littlewood -- a grindy sycophant simulator.

avatar

I'd like to begin this post by stating that I usually love grindy games. I can spend hours upon days upon weeks mindlessly performing various tasks in games that ultimately lead nowhere.

For example: The Elder Scrolls Online. I don't think I've actually played the game in a year or two. Every time I open it, I just end up mindlessly farming materials for the entire month's subscription. There's something therapeutic about it for me. I phase out into my own little world and daydream while the scenery passes me by, I gather all the things, sell them in my various guild stores, and do it again, and again, making all the gold I can for no real reason.

I used to do it in World of Warcraft also; slap some music on and spend hours farming ore, for no real reason other than I found it therapeutic and received gold for my endeavours.

Idle clickers!! I have one called Voodoo Garden. You can basically just walk away from the game and let it do its own thing, but I'll happily sit there and click things, for hours, because... I don't even know why. It has an addictive quality to it.

Thus, it disappoints me to say that I just can't get into Littlewood.

The game is adorable, I'll just throw that out there. I like the premise of it -- building up and residing over a town after saving the world from great doom and destruction. It's just... I don't really feel rewarded for my time? I guess?

First off, I'm not interested in any of the villagers. They're all sycophants desperate to woo me, the great hero.

2.png

I get it, truly; I am THE hero that rescued the world. But could these people have some more personality instead of throwing themselves at my feet, and throwing themselves into my mailbox, and begging to accompany me when I do something so paltry as to gather vegetables from the farm?

Hell, one of them will only be happy if I move her house a stone's throw from my own.

Houses.

Literally all I am doing is building, rearranging, and upgrading houses and businesses. The entire time I'm doing it, I feel like I am wasting my time. There is no sense of reward, of satisfaction; there is no point.

The thing is, after completing these things you do get some form of reward whether it's an item or monetary... but I don't feel rewarded.

Spend two days chopping down trees. Spend another two days turning them into planks. Upgrade some stuff.

Spend a couple days mining stone and various ores. Spend another couple of days turning them into bricks. Upgrade stuff.

Rinse. Repeat.

Yay. Someone new has moved into town. Gather stone and wood, turn them into bricks and planks, build them a house. Oh look, they're another sycophant desperate to get into my lady's pants.

Rinse and repeat again.

I'm just not feeling it.

I just feel as though I'm slogging through, trying to justify the time I've already spent in it, trying to justify the price I paid for it, and just hoping that maybe something will actually happen and make me feel excited to play this.

Nothing has yet.

Maybe I'm just not in the right mood for this type of game at the moment? But I'm finding it so very disappointing. I think I'm done with it for now. 🤷‍♀

Maybe I'll try again another time...

Until next time,

Thanks for stopping by!

I'd say give it a try anyway! You might like it. 🙂 It does have Overwhelmingly Positive reviews on Steam, so it appeals to a lot of people. In saying that though, a fair few of those reviews compared this to Stardew Valley and I just don't see it, at all.

But yeah, you should give it a try! Although I'm not feeling it, you might have a better time. 😃

You're a master at discovering new decent games to kill boredom. Ahhh just gotta love that process of gathering material and building

Cheers 😊 these types of games are very therapeutic. I'm not entirely sure why; there is probably some sort of psychology behind it!

I'm thinking it's because it helps one to escape and heal mental fatigue really. I'm not totally sure but it sure seems positively addictive

Hahaha! 😆 Yeah may as well. 🤣

I don't know. My main issue is there's no challenge or progression. You don't want people throwing themselves at you, you want to learn them and like them! Well, I do anyway, haha.

Maybe it's a harem-type game where you should be banging everyone. You have to get them in your pants first before getting to know them. Idk, worth a shot.

Thanks for the support on my posts. The only games I liked to grind was Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyria Chronicles 1 and 3. I really hated grinding so thank God for Youtube vids showing cutscenes in games!

No worries! 😊

Haha, grinding is one of my favourite things! So you know a game must be god-awful if even I, queen of the grind, can't handle it lmao.

Final Fantasy Tactics was amazing though. Haven't tried Valkyria Chronicles yet.

Oh, you'll love Valkyria Chronicles! I recommend playing 1,3 and 4 in Chronological order. 3 was Japan only PSP exclusive, so only way you can play is an English-patch rom through PSP emulator. 2 was not so good IMHO as the others but if you want to play for some story continuation, it takes place after 1,3 and 4.

I haven't played 4 yet but I plan to once I can be able to buy a good gaming PC. They say its like a good, big expansion pack of Valkyria Chronicles 1 with new characters and added features.
