πŸͺ“ Tree Trimming To Prevent Future Camper Injuries πŸ•οΈ & A Brief Run For Our Lives πŸƒβ€β™‚οΈ

As our deck project nears completion, I had a realization that the trees nearby had many branches capable of falling and injuring potential guests/campers.

Everything Involves Wood πŸͺ΅

Β  Β  Β The following sentence contains the word "wood" 7 times, but not without good reason. Our wooden fence project is on hold because our lumberjack is out of wood, so while waiting for him to cut more wood we began a wooden deck project using recycled wood, but then briefly stopped this project because there was wood hanging high above that endangered our wood below.

Β  Β  Β On the opposite side of our property is the partially finished fence. Everyone in the village thought the idea was crazy and weird, but now that some of the pickets have been installed we are getting compliments on how nice it looks. There was doubt as to why I wanted to stagger the pickets on opposite sides, but I did this because to allow the extreme mountain winds to pass through while also allowing passing cars and motos to get a small preview of what's inside the fence.

Youngest Chainsaw-ist Recruited πŸͺš

vbvbvb.png

Β  Β  Β Our deck project is nearly done, but even before we started this there were three old trees at the river's edge that previously supported the hammock hut. A lot of land surrounding the roots was lost during last year's flood, and this combined with the fact these trees are all tall, heavy, and old, made me want to have tops cut off so that no branches can fall down on the new deck area, or even worse, people hanging out on the deck.

Β  Β  Β Luckily or unluckily almost everyone in the village has a chainsaw, albeit mostly for illicit purposes. Usually trees are cut from the bottom to fell them, so most of the soldiers that parade as nighttime illegal lumberjacks in the village aren't exactly expert tree climbers, and therefore a job like tree trimming is an entirely different skillset. The youngest chainsaw owner in the village was up for the challenge, and asked $25+ USD for the job, a price we thought was quite fair considering the risk level.

Helper Required πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ

cvcv.png

Β  Β  Β The day's designated tree climber happened to be the father of the kid I take home from school occasionally and also the father of the girl Srey-Yuu rides to school with on a moto together. We didn't have to search very far before finding a willing amateur tree trimmer, and he brought a friend/helper to help him, but this guy's belly means mother gravity wanted him to stay on the ground floor.

Β  Β  Β In the above photo there is a human, can you see him? He was pretty hard to spot behind all the branches. The first tree to go was the scariest and largest one, and because of the angle he made his tree stand and how heavy his chainsaw is, he wasn't able to cut the notch on the river's side of the tree, thus almost guaranteeing it's safe fall towards the river.

nbvcx.png

Β  Β  Β After about an hour he realized things had gotten out of hand and he wasn't sure which way the tree would fall, and was just gonna cut as much as he could and try to escape when necessary. I unfortunately didn't catch this on video because the treetop fell with a gust of wind while we were all watching and waiting. I was recording video for several minutes and had just shut off the camera when the trimmer stopped for a cigarette break. It fell at such a bad angle that we all ran for our lives while laughing like children from the adrenaline rush.

Β  Β  Β Although I didn't catch the scary unpredictable first treetop falling, I did catch a few of the highlights from smaller branch cuts on the other trees. Hopefully in the next year or two the trees will grow new branches at a lower and safer height, and I plan to soon reinforce the roots with river rocks and dirt. All the trees weigh a lot less now as well, so I hope this will decrease any chance of them toppling in a storm and ripping up the ground near our soon-to-be new deck.

Although it was quite dangerous to climb trees and cut some branches. But, I see that man knows exactly what he was doing and he was free from an accident as well. You're so thoughtful of considering the future campers' safety and decided to trim the tree. !PIZZA

There were some tense moments when the first tree top fell, his platform broke and he nearly fell, but luckily everything was okay. I feel much better now knowing that dead branches are not high in the sky directly above the deck.

We need to cut many banches of big trees especially in the edge of big street.

Memang seharusnya kita memotong banyak cabang pohon besar khususnya di tepi jalan besar.

Greetings from Indonesia

Anywhere people are it's best not to have heavy dead branches hanging above. I now don't have to worry about the safety of guests, so that's a relief.

Glad that you have neighbors who knows how to trim and cut trees and not afraid of heights. We do tree trimming and cutting as well as part of our maintenance services that we do. The biggest that we cut had. 58 inch diameter trunk and 130ft long... Haha, I measured it when the tree fell and did it for a week.

Now you are all safe from falling tree trunks or branches. Guess we'll be seeing your new porch soon.

This just had me laughing, the thought of them all having chain saws, imagine if they all use it all at once... It would sound like a motorbike riot, like Harleys gone mad!😁😁

I'm glad we were able to save the trees and only cut the high branches. The treecutters in our village are used to clearcutting, so they only cut the whole tree from the bottom. It took a daring guy to climb half way up and make cuts even though he had little prior experience.

You're right about the chainsaws, the forest here sounds like a motorcoss track at 2am, and the Wildlife Alliance NGO is only 5km away πŸ€”πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ.

Wow! What an expert climber and trimmer....
Haha, perhaps they are wearing earplugs😁😁 5km isn't really that far and to think the illegal cutters do it at dawn which is really a quiet time that even if a cat meows it can be heard miles away...
Or perhaps they have sound proof houses... Haha

There are a lot of chases and captures weekly, it's like Tom and Jerry.

I think it's common in rural areas, because even in Suriname some houses didn't find the need to put a fence. The funny thing was though, that even if they didn't have a fence, they had a "gate" πŸ™ˆπŸ˜‚.

Funny you mention that, I have seen quite a few gates without fences in Suriname. Here it's more common to see a fence without a gate. I think the fences are so necessary here because people let their cows loose during the day, and if your garden or land is unprotected your harvest could be gone in a matter of hours.

Ah yes, that explains it. Where I used to live some neighbors also had a cow or two or goats and before we lived there they asked my dad if the cattle could graze there.

The only thing that bothered me of the no fence, were the dogs who came after my ankles early morning when I used to take the bike to school 🀣. A couple of times people/neighbors had to come to my rescue hahaha.

Crazy that the dogs went after me on the bike but left the pedestrians be.

I've experienced this scenario in Suriname, even in Clevia there were several dogs that had a problem with me riding my bike, but no problem with passing by on foot.
