Slowly Passing by - Monomad Challenge
Hail to the Hive!
Everything about canal life and Narrowboat living is slow. The boats are really slow so if you are in a hurry to be anywhere, this is not the place to be. This is where you want to be if you want to take it slow. Not having to be anywhere quickly, or at all, is the point. There’s always seems to be time for a chat or, as is the case with passing boats, a brief ‘hello’ as they quietly chug along.
The official speed limit on the canals is 4mph but there is a rule that when passing boats that are moored up along the side you must slow down and pass at engine tick over speed.
This always means there’s time for a quick hello or where are you going today, nice weather etc. compliments are made about each others boats or about the work you are doing on it. It’s allpretty good natured, relaxed and slow.
I am sure many would find it boring but it seems to attract people of all ages and all walks of life. It’s calming. It’s friendly. It’s slow.
I am very much looking forward to be out cruising again soon and be the one that is slowing and passing by again.
But for now I’ll sit and sip my coffee and have a few friendly words for the passing narrowboaters. Take a few photos and crack a few jokes.
Love this lifestyle. Calm, relaxed & slow, what’s not to love about it?

4mph is definitely not a fast cruising speed, by any stretch, but being able to really slow down must be super relaxing.
I remember a month or two ago being out camping in rather isolated area. The nearest town was about 25 minutes away; along the way was a very small village with a tow truck and a gas station/deli/general store-in-one. Sitting in the front were two fellows just enjoying the day. I wonder if I could find it in myself to slow down like that for an extended period of time.
This pictures are really nice... well done
