Hello everybody on Hive and especially the PukoMundo Community! My name is Jasper and I'm writing (and singing) to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

Please forgive the setting (the back of my car in the office parking lot!) and the lack of microphone and speaker, but I am supposed to be going to the office a lot this week, and there is a baby I must not wake up when I get home in the evenings! Hahaha!

This is Week 52 of the “Singing Voice” or “La Voz Cantante” challenge, but only my third time contributing!

Who remembers the early 1990s? I barely remember them as I was born in 1985, but I have a sister who is slightly older than me, so I was brought up on a mixture of my parents’ music (a lot of rock and roll from the 1960s and 1970s) and my sister’s 1990s music! You will probably see me flip back and forth on this platform between the two!

Let’s do the 1990s this week with an unplugged cover of “Under The Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers!

Here is the original version of the song:

By the way, I am doing a weekly post on Thursdays where I ask for cover song requests in the comments, and then if I attempt your song in the following week's post, you become a beneficiary to 50% of the post's rewards in HP! Please think of a song you’d like me to try and look out for my Thursday posts!

Lyrics for “Under The Bridge” by Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP)

Sometimes I feel like I don't have a partner
Sometimes I feel like my only friend
Is the city I live in, the city of angels
Lonely as I am, together we cry

I drive on her streets 'cause she's my companion
I walk through her hills 'cause she knows who I am
She sees my good deeds and she kisses me windy
Well, I never worry, now that is a lie

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
Yeah, yeah, yeah

It's hard to believe that there's nobody out there
It's hard to believe that I'm all alone
At least I have her love, the city, she loves me
Lonely as I am, together we cry

I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way
I don't ever wanna feel
Like I did that day
Take me to the place I love
Take me all the way

Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, no, no-no, yeah, yeah
Love me, I say, yeah yeah
One time
Is where I drew some blood
(Under the bridge downtown)
I could not get enough
(Under the bridge downtown)
Forgot about my love
(Under the bridge downtown)
I gave my life away
Yeah, yeah
Oh, no, no-no-no, yeah, yeah
Oh, no, I said, oh, yeah, yeah
Where I stay

Letra de "Under The Bridge" de Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP)

no quiero volver a sentir
como hice yo ese dia
Llevame al lugar que amo
Llevame todo en camino
no quiero volver a sentir
no quiero volver a sentir
como hice yo ese dia
Llevame al lugar que amo
Llevame todo en camino
no quiero volver a sentir
como hice yo ese dia
Llevame al lugar que amo
Llevame todo en camino
Si, si, si
Oh, no, no, no, sí, sí
Ámame, digo, sí, sí
Una vez
Es donde saqué un poco de sangre
(Debajo del puente del centro)
no pude tener suficiente
(Debajo del puente del centro)
se olvidó de mi amor
(Debajo del puente del centro)
entregué mi vida
Sí, sí
Oh, no, no-no-no, sí, sí
Oh, no, dije, oh, sí, sí
Donde me alojo

When there is talent, speakers and microphone are not needed, the true artist sings and plays however he can and you are one my friend 🤜🤛; tremendous classic you brought, I was born in 1983 and grew up with the rock of the 90s, the best time of music in general and then in the early 2000s the musical movement grows more reaching more listeners worldwide and marking an era that today is greatly missed!!!!

Great job Jasper, you sang and played very cool, I really enjoyed your presentation, I congratulate you and wish you success for the contest 🙌😀💛.... You Rockkk!!! 👊😎🔥🎙️🎸🎶❤️🌟🍻💥💫💯

Wonderful!
No need for speaker or mic, that was excellent. Your cellphone does a good job of balancing the voice and instrument or you do a great job of doing so. No idea how far along the algorithms in modern cellphones are.

I'm impressed by the spectrum of your voice every time, you sing and play beautiful. The touch of backbeat percussion was spot on and gave it that extra kick.

Thank you so much! I've actually always just uploaded the sound as the cellphone records it... probably wouldn't know how to edit after the fact! Hahaha!

The percussion you're mentioning is probably just my foot stomping in the footwell of the car... I naturally keep time with my foot and the actual working parts (my hands and voice) must follow that to keep a natural rhythm going... I often tell people that guitar playing 101 is making sure you keep time with your foot and make that as natural as possible...

I actually meant hitting the dampened strings on the backbeat (count 2 and 4). In the original they just went into staccato, stopping the the sound and of course got a snare beat on 2 and 4.

You put them both together, the snare backbeat and the staccato style.
You do that a lot with your covers when you play alone on a single instrument and it adds depth to your versions, compensating for the missing other instruments. That's part of what makes your music so great.

Ah thank you! I understand - but it's just what comes naturally when I try to emulate the vibe of the song! You almost sound like a poetry teacher unraveling why a poem sounds great when the poet probably just "went with it"!!!

I think I have other stylistic things that I take for granted but maybe are a bit more unique than I give myself credit for - I definitely palm-mute a lot on verses for example, so that the transition to a chorus can raise the energy when I don't mute anymore.

That happens sometimes when the geek in me is triggered 😋

Yes, you do. And that's giving your music its soul. The feeling that the artist is really enjoying what (s)he's doing is so important. Just keep doing it and "go with it"!!!
