Alternative Weekend: Public Image Ltd, Anathema, Angband

It’s Saturday and that means weekend and that means Alternative Weekend again! Yet another chance for me to post on my community of ONE, where few dare to look and fewer click the links.

NEW_alternative112226_960_720.jpg

I can’t blame you give the extraordinary weirdness of my musical tastes, but I was hoping for even ONE more post to land in the Alternative Weekend community so I could perhaps have a listen to something else other than my own eclectic shit.

So here’s an incentive. The first 'decent' post I see that is not mine I will give a full vote too. Talk about dangling the bloody carrot.

Post an article that highlights THREE great songs that are progressive, punk, metal, goth or alternative, just NOT mainstream.

There are no other rules, just make your own!

If you have a short story or something to offer regarding an opinion on your songs, then share it with us.

Simply posting links won’t get you anywhere in terms of votes or rewards.

Be creative, let us know what this or that song reminds you of, who the band is trying to plagiarise, why you think they should be more popular or why you want to shag the hot vocalist.

And if you desire to use the Alternative Weekend Community DURING the week as you simply cannot wait, then do so. The name is simply a legacy of the old days.

Public Image Ltd – Death Disco (Metal Box – 1979)

For a short while, this song really got into my head and became an annoying Earworm. Can you imagine John Lydon’s screams reverberating in your mind every few seconds?

While those screams are maybe my least favourite part of this song I notice things, such as that relentless metallic guitar-driven beat by the excellent Keith Levine.

Jah Wobble’s intentional grins at the camera revealing fake blackened teeth always make me laugh. Artists just don’t do this kind of shit anymore!

I feel this song was the highlight of the PIL material and comes from the revered Metal Box album, another one that I have not managed to get to grips with.

Anathema – Regret (Alternative 4 – 1998)

Anathema is a band I have written about before and I had to dig into my past archives to ensure I was not duplicating a past song.

Alternative 4 was the band emerging from their doom metal period and transforming into a different musical phase.

They would go through other transformations later, but this and the Judgement album were a fine period for them.

You will hear some Pink Floyd in here and this one takes a while to get going. Vincent Cavanagh talks about fear, regret, and loneliness, what was going through his mind when writing this?

Angband – Foresaken Dreams (Visions of the Seeker – 2010)

I had to contact @steevc about this one that I listened to almost 2 years ago. The guitarist in Angband was an active Steemian once (@mahyardean) but like many has not posted in a long time.

I left a message on Angbands' YouTube page letting them know I would be highlighting one of their old songs in a forthcoming post.

They responded almost immediately letting me know they have a new album out very soon. It’s good to hear they are still making new music.

As for the song, it takes a little while to grow and the end section contains some exquisite guitar work from @mahyardean.

Metal and a band from Iran from a western perspective does not seem a conducive combination, but I guess they are going against the grain. Many of their other songs are heavier and more thrash based.

Fast forward to around 3:15 if you want to hear that awesome guitar work.

I struggle with John Lydon's vocals. I know they are revered, but PiL are a bit of a novelty act to me. The Anathema has definited Pink Floyd influences. Even some Animals era guitar in there. Would be great to have @mahyardean and his band back on Steem. They would get some support here.

I know they are revered, but PiL are a bit of a novelty act to me.

Revered? They kicked off something that we would never have heard otherwise, out of tune voices!

The Anathema has definitely Pink Floyd influences.

The band are very patchy, I still have some of their back catalogue to try and listen and get into.

Would be great to have @mahyardean and his band back on Steem. They would get some support here.

I was surprised they responded so soon. The responder may not have been @mahyardean but the vocalist.

Great suggestions! Anathema's Alternative 4 is a really great album, even though Judgement is my favorite. :)
