The Dark Side Of Social Media

avatar

ENG

I recently finished watching an interesting documentary made by Netflix whose title is _The Social Dramma _. In this documentary we are dealing with the dark side of social networks, the one we often do not know, and several experts are interviewed, mostly former employees of Google, Facebook, Instagram and other important social networks, all with a background of corporate trainers.

During their interview, it is evident how often they are almost embarrassed to tell in detail their experience, which has had negative effects on their lives, becoming dependent and slaves of their work, losing any relationship with reality and undergoing a process of alienation. and extremely digitalization.

The focal theme on which the interview focuses is the real purpose of social media, far from offering a useful service to humanity, connecting users from different parts of the world, but that of being platforms where you can make huge profits.

We are constantly monitored: all our online movements are scrupulously analyzed, from the searches carried out to the photos we view. All these data are inserted in powerful machines, guided by an algorithm that continuously analyzes our data to study our profiles in order to be able to direct us to the sale of some advertisements suitable for our profile.

We often worry that our privacy is being violated and sold to third party companies, but in reality no one has an interest in selling our data. Powerful companies are creating our avatars and the algorithm will be more and more accurate as time goes by, anticipating and predicting our moves.

This means that social media will be able to manipulate our choices and can direct us to make choices based on our knowledge. They can then sell us well-defined products or manipulate our actions.

In reality this is already happening through Fake News, fake news that constantly appears on the web in order to destabilize the truth and lead us to believe something else. The reason? The truth, in addition to being boring, does not allow for high earnings.

A recent example is related to Covid-19 and the many fake news that have generated billions in profits, sponsoring absolutely useless products to fight the virus and generating enormous disinformation.

In addition, social networks have created a dangerous digital world in which each user relates and evaluates himself based on the likes and comments received for each published photo. An American sociologist has analyzed the data of suicides against young people in the last 20 years: until 2010 the number has remained constant but from this year onwards the curve is steeply rising. 2010 is the year when social media appeared on mobile devices.

A lot of very interesting information that should make us reflect for a moment and use social media channels with more caution and ask for help if we are in difficulty.

Ottima riflessione sui social,
