Recensione Libro: La regola dell'equilibrio
In una Bari contraddittoria e bifronte, Guido Guerrieri è un avvocato malinconico, riluttante e disilluso che ormai, dopo anni di carriera, sceglie con cura i propri casi e le proprie amicizie.
Con una imprevista eccezione, il caso che vede coinvolto un suo amico, giudice irreprensibile, al di sopra di ogni sospetto che, accusato di corruzione, affiderà proprio a lui, che è il migliore, la sua difesa per venir fuori illeso dalla situazione in assoluto più rognosa per un legale.
Un caso così, al punto della vita in cui si trova Guerrieri, lo costringerà inevitabilmente a mettere in discussione tutto: il suo passato, il suo futuro, la sua reputazione, i suoi valori, la sfera pubblica, la dimensione privata, il mestiere, le relazioni. Ma soprattutto lo scossone più grande lo subiranno tutti quei capisaldi morali imprescindibili per chi fa il suo lavoro e che mai Guerrieri avrebbe pensato di essere costretto a rivedere e a confermare o a correggere.
L’esito di questa prova che l’avvocato, pur contro la sua volontà, dovrà superare, dipenderà solo da lui e dalla strategia che deciderà di adottare, dalla direzione che deciderà di prendere trovandosi al centro di un ponte sospeso e in bilico, abbarbicato su due sponde opposte ma ugualmente traballanti e perigliose.
Una scelta che non potrà essere procrastinata né demandata. Lui e la sua coscienza, soli contro tutti.
In un dialogo con se stesso, pensando ad alta voce, il problema che Guerrieri dovrà affrontare sarà di natura etica e morale e si giocherà tutto sull’equilibrio tra giusto e sbagliato, tra verità e menzogna, tra lasciar correre o abbracciare le proprie responsabilità.
I quesiti ai quali dovrà trovare un risposta saranno tanti. Chi può dirsi senza peccato se tutti gli uomini indistintamente, avendone occasione, commettono atti immorali? Dove inizia e dove finisce la verità per chi mente a se stesso? Quanto conta la vanità? Chi è davvero nella posizione di poter giudicare o giudicarsi? Il fine può giustificare i mezzi? Quanto e come il denaro è in grado di corrompere una persona ambiziosa per la quale nulla è mai abbastanza?
Son questi gli interrogativi che trascineranno l’avvocato Guerrieri in una spirale vorticosa, pericolosa e soffocante costituita da tradimenti, delusioni e apparente impossibilità di fuga e di azione. Una prigionia mentale da cui Guido Guerrieri – il cui destino di leader combattente è scritto nel nome – verrà fuori grazie a una donna e a un amico ma soprattutto grazie all’eco lontana delle parole inconfutabili e sentenziose di suo nonno che gli aveva rivelato in cosa consistesse la regola dell’equilibrio: ‘non mentire mai a se stessi sulle ragioni e sul significato di quello che facciamo o che non facciamo’. Questa è l’unica scialuppa di salvataggio, l’unico modo per uscire feriti ma vivi da una lotta all’ultimo sangue con il nostro peggior nemico e il nostro più spietato giudice: la nostra coscienza.
È vero, come hanno scritto in molti, che l’avvocato Guerrieri è un personaggio meraviglioso. Un eroe amletico in quanto assalito dal dubbio, sebbene non tragico, perché da esso non si farà sopraffare riuscendo a scegliersi il proprio destino.
Gianrico Carofiglio scrive, sicuramente e per ovvie ragioni, con grande cognizione di causa, un legal thriller che sotto la superficie intricata di una trascinante vicenda giudiziaria che non manca di colpi di scena, nasconde abilmente e volutamente una profonda, intima e condivisa riflessione filosofica morale, i cui interrogativi coinvolgeranno inevitabilmente anche il lettore e la sua coscienza.

Where does the truth begin and end for those who lie to themselves? How important is vanity? Who is really in a position to judge or judge himself? Can the end justify the means? How much and how is money able to corrupt an ambitious person for whom nothing is ever enough?
These are the questions that will drag the lawyer Guerrieri into a whirlwind, dangerous and suffocating spiral consisting of betrayals, disappointments and the apparent impossibility of escape and action. A mental captivity from which Guido Guerrieri - whose destiny as a fighting leader is written in the name - will emerge thanks to a woman and a friend but above all thanks to the distant echo of the irrefutable and sententious words of his grandfather who had revealed to him what it consisted of the rule of balance: 'never lie to yourself about the reasons and meaning of what we do or do not do'. This is the only lifeboat, the only way to get out injured but alive from a fight to the death with our worst enemy and our most ruthless judge: our conscience.
It is true, as many have written, that the lawyer Guerrieri is a wonderful character. A Hamletic hero as assailed by doubt, although not tragic, because he will not be overwhelmed by it, managing to choose his own destiny.
