How I changed the world [IT-EN]

A e B soli nello scompartimento.
Hans arrivò dopo poche ore e ci lasciarono parlare senza problemi.
"Zitto!
Bruno Schneider.

Mr. A went into the compartment, borsalino on his head, newspaper folded in his jacket pocket, tweed jacket, so English, so classic, so surprising at that hour, in that place among commuters without waiting, he sat in front of Mr. B, who he was dozing, his head tucked away in his denim jacket, so anonymous, so made elsewhere.
Mr. A looked at Mr. B following the up and down of the breath in his chest. The usual river of men and women inside and out. A and B alone in the compartment. Tweed stood up, a jolt of speed, the excitement of a curve, the door opening unexpectedly. Jeans settled into his jacket and stretched out his legs. A young woman entered, gray eyes, the rest whatever.
"Still here?"
The tone of reproach in the girl's voice was peremptory, a hand flashed out of the tweed jacket and in the hand was a pistol with a silencer. A few seconds and the six knocks, almost impossible to hear in the rattle of the train, all hit. Streams of blood streamed from the jean jacket, temple, and four other places. The gray-eyed girl and the man with the borsalino went out without haste and the compartment was silent, only a corpse and then the sound of the train's braking.
This was the scene I saw in my olorec that fateful February 2, 2020.
At first I was not particularly impressed, the usual spy holofilm I thought, maybe on a subconscious level I noticed that there was no holotv symbol from which the signal came, but at the moment I didn't pay attention. I changed the channel: I never liked holofilms all about shooting, murder ... I switched to a holodocumentary about the mission to Mars.
But I was left with a feeling of discomfort, like the feeling of having seen something known, I thought: it will be one of those old 3D films recreated on purpose in an ol version for the new holotvs still short of holographic content. Only after dinner, while I was rolling up my quotivision, my eye fell on the 3D photo and the title of the crime story. The headline read: "Evert Ek's Killer Still Unnamed, Shot on the Train to Stockholm with Six Gunshots."
A little bell began to ring in my brain.
Then I stopped on the photo, it was only a three-dimensional photo, but there was no doubt: it was the corpse I had seen in the holotv, it was the guy I had seen killed a few hours earlier.
Here's what Mr. B was called: Evert Ek.
I began to think about it, the fact had happened two days before, so someone must have filmed it with a holocamera and shown in holotv, but if there was a holofilm broadcast hours before, as never before on the quotivision of that incredible document it was not mentioned in no way? Then I called myself an idiot, it was certainly a reconstruction created to show how the fact could have happened, how did I get so stupid?!?
I went to sleep but doubt accompanied me through a night full of murders.
Today, after many years, it seems incredible that that evening the greatest upheaval of human civilization began, that the discovery of CHEW and its use were born from a chance, indeed from a double chance, a "defective" olorec and a very curious human being, that is me!
The next day I couldn't help myself and tuned my olorec back to scan mode, where I had seen that "reconstruction" of the crime the day before. The same thing I did for more than a month, from time to time, but the broadcasts of that holotv were always stranger and always without any symbol of the station.
Mostly senseless scenes, they looked like holovisions from a holocam randomly placed somewhere, without any criteria. The thing seemed more and more mysterious and incomprehensible to me but the holovisions were so boring that as I turned more and more rarely on scan and after a few months I had almost forgotten the whole story.
About six months later I looked at the evening holotg with little interest, when my attention suddenly woke up, I hadn't heard the start of the news but the holograms of the two people framed were familiar to me, very familiar, I woke up my brain and I could hear that they had been arrested for the murder of Evert Ek months earlier on a train. It was Olof Mankeln, a killer who had been wanted for years and a girl about whom nothing was yet known.
Seeing those two in hologram gave me the effect of a slap, I woke up suddenly: those two did not resemble the two I saw months earlier in what then seemed to me a reconstruction of the crime, those two WERE the two I saw then.
It was not a reconstruction, I had seen the murder LIVE!
I was sure of it, the scene presented itself in front of me vividly and I had no doubts at that moment. I tell the whole story to make it clear how much obtuseness I had to overcome to make human civilization make the great leap it has made ... I think the merit was the inevitability of things, certainly not my personal one. Then I was convinced that on that train there was a holocam that had filmed the whole scene and had broadcast it live.
The rusty wheels in my brain, however, took with difficulty to turn and I reconstructed the story, slowly I remembered that that evening, that fateful evening, when I saw the murder, it could not be live, because it had happened two days before, I remembered in fact of the photo on the quotivision and I discarded the first hypothesis. It was therefore a holofilm shot two days earlier, during the crime, then broadcast two days later. But why, if this holofilm existed, it had taken six months to arrest the murderer and his accomplice, so easily recognizable?
As a good model citizen I reported this to the police as I saw something unclear about it.
At that time I did not know absolutely the whole story behind the murder of Evert Ek and my amazement was great the next morning at dawn when three plainclothes of the secret services took me and, without much delicacy, took me to the " doctor "as they called him, giggling. Fortunately for me what I said under the influence of drugs was convincing enough because I was demoted to a common criminal, even if they never told me what I was accused of, so after two days I was granted the classic phone call to the lawyer.
Among my friends I had one as a lawyer, although he actually worked in the legal department of a telecommunications company, but it was always better than nothing.
Hans arrived after a few hours and they let us talk smoothly.
He asked me a lot of questions that I hadn't even thought of.
Why had I seen a murder that took place in Sweden and moreover of a very important figure in the circles of espionage? Hadn't I wondered what the hell of holotv it transmitted without a symbol to distinguish it? Why had it occurred to me to notify the police? Did I have anything to do with that story? Did I know anyone before that story, Ek, Mankeln or the girl, had I ever seen them before? Did I have secrets he didn't know? Did I have an alibi for the day of the murder? Was I drunk or drugged the night I thought I saw everything in my holotv? Had other broadcasts on that channel struck me or did I still remember them for some reason?
I don't know exactly what Hans told the police or what they were convinced of, the fact remains that after five days I was able to go home without any particular charge. The whole story, however, made my poor neurons more and more agitated and I kept mulling over it.
After a couple of weeks, Hans, Hans and Fritz Bauer, a colleague of Hans's, organized a walk in the mountains. It was on that occasion that Fritz formulated his hypothesis and the world took the unexpected direction that led him to where he is today.
We stopped to sleep at the Riemannhaus over 2000 meters high in the Berchtesgaden park.
After four hours of climbing we had eaten, drank, then drank again, then drank again ... and Hans insisted that I tell my "strange story" to Fritz. I don't remember, as it is easy to guess, exactly how I told it to him, the fact is that Fritz came up with his theory "that explained everything".
"But it's obvious Bruno, how did you not get there by yourself?"
"It may be obvious - I replied - but I just don't understand!"
Fritz continued: "As you surely know, holotransmission carries a huge amount of information that allows your holoreceiver to reconstruct the whole scene in the middle of your house."
"I know this Fritz ..."
"Shut up! I was saying ... ah yes, here, a suitably modulated neutrino beam is used to do this."
"Eh ..." - I said, while Hans looked at us with an absent look, I think he was, of the three, the one who had drunk the most and seemed more on the verge of falling with his forehead on the table rather than intervening in the middle of a speech.
"... eh then, simply, your holotv has picked up a beam of neutrinos that did not come from a transmission of some holotevision but from the past or the future: obvious isn't it?"
"Of course I don't know, certainly not from the future, it could at least come from the past ..." I commented.
"In fact - Fritz was unleashed - in a sense, all transmissions come from the past, because, however small, there is a lapse of time between sending the signal and its reception, so you always see something that has happened in the past, even if it is a very recent past. "
"Your holotv is just a little broken and receives signals from a past that is more past than normal: that's all!"
We discussed it a little more and then went to sleep.
I didn't think much about that idea, it seemed to me typical over-the-limit alcoholic talk. On the contrary, Fritz was perhaps more sober and was certainly a lover of the subject which was also, in part, his work. A few days later, in fact, he showed up at my house with some gadgets I had never seen and told me that he wanted to check if his theory had any foundation.
In practice he wanted to try to modulate the reception in order to see in the past in a very precise place and time in order to verify if the holotv actually "saw" beams of "natural" neutrinos coming from the past more past than normal, as he said he. Things went on for a long time and, despite the difficulties, Fritz was increasingly convinced that things were as he thought.
After an infinite number of attempts and several months spent in a room that I didn't use and where we had moved the holotv, he finally came to me one evening and said: "We did it!"
He accompanied me to the other room and ... in the middle of the room there were me, he and Hans at the wooden table of the Riemannhaus, half drunk, discussing my "magical" holotv!
Until that moment I was in the balance whether to believe that Fritz was crazy or was a genius and I had to realize that maybe he was also crazy, but he was certainly a genius. After that evening the story is known to all, Fritz, not without difficulty, had an article published in a scientific journal and patented the equipment.
As everyone knows this second thing was useless, after a few months the discovery was declared of public utility and then nationalized in the union, only to be copied all over the world without anyone ever having dreamed of giving a penny to Fritz, much less to myself. Of course we have gained fame and honor from it and I do not hide the fact that we are proud of the work we have done and for having changed the world for the better in a few years.
I have heard that today some research centers with the use of ultra-sophisticated amplifiers have come to make a holoscene of nearly 200 years back in time acceptably visible and audible.
According to many physicists there is a limit beyond which it will not be possible to go and it seems that this limit is about to be reached. Of course, these sophisticated researches have allowed us to significantly rewrite a large slice of the history of the last two centuries but what really matters is what CHEW did the CHrono Eye Witness, as it was officially defined and which I jokingly call OloFritz , that is, how it has transformed our society at the base by making crime fundamentally impossible and the conduct of each of us transparent as crystal.
Now there is a long way ahead of us, obviously the mentality of men needs time to change so deeply, to accept that they are potentially under the eyes of the whole world, whatever action they do and for the next 200 years. We all see how having an unassailable witness like CHEW makes trials simple and immediate and in a few years has reduced crime of all types around the world to virtually zero but all this has cost an increase in suicides up to the rate current of one hundred million people a year.
I believe it is a fair price to pay, the next generations will be born with imprinted on their DNA, not the categorical imperative not to commit crimes, but with the awareness of the impossibility of doing it without suffering the consequences: the inevitability of punishment. Humanity is learning little by little never to lie, not to use any kind of cunning, subterfuge or crime and this is certainly good.
This transition period is difficult for everyone, it is impossible for many, it will be easier for our children, it will be natural for our grandchildren. Humanity has undergone a very strong natural selection in recent years, only those who are able to survive in this new glass house that Fritz and I have helped to create will be the bearer of the new human civilization.
Many things today have become very simple, society in many ways has simplified and the standard of living of the whole world is now higher than ever. Other things have become enormously complicated, first of all the relationships between people, love, friendship and many other ways of interacting are in great crisis today, but it is a crisis of growth, passing from childhood to age adult.
We are leaving a world of relationships based on lies and simulation to arrive, past the ford, to true relationships, made of perfect and pure sincerity and truth. However, it is necessary to invent new ways of being in relationship and abandon the old patterns that rested on a sea of falsehoods, it is necessary to accept those unconfessable sides that we all have but that we pretended before we did not have, otherwise life could become impossible for everyone.
Will we be so perfect, better, will our grandchildren be perfect enough to survive in this perfect world?
I really hope that this will be possible even if I admit that it may seem anachronistic to write it in this note that I leave today, just before taking my life as Hans and Fritz did a few months ago.
Bruno Schneider.
