Rita era stata violata in modo inusuale.
Quante gole tagliate?”
Vabbè dai uno in meno.
Già come ho fatto?
Sbagliata? Giusta?
Quello che so riguarda me e me solo.

I'm not sure I did the right thing. On the other hand, when are we really safe and when do we have the opportunity to take other roads to verify it? Almost never, in life, is it possible to know what would have happened if.
Rita arrived in front of me in the middle of the night between a Thursday and a Friday, a red code, when I was already exhausted. I had to deal with the usual drunks, with broken noses, with hypochondriac old women with imaginary illnesses, drug addicts, car accidents, a heart attack. An ordinary night, a night like many others. And I was exhausted, as always.
When she arrived at the admission, Rita was passed out and seemed to have lost a lot of blood. I immediately had her have a transfusion and began to visit her. He recovered a little only after a long time.
When she finally recovered, she was dazed more than shocked, also disoriented. She told me that she suddenly woke up in Via Gesù, in the center, the driver of the red cross then confirmed that he had found her right there. She found herself lying on the ground, in a state of confusion, as soon as she focused on the world around, she saw a patch of blood come out from under her skirt, she felt bad everywhere and in particular in the belly. She managed to get up and call for help, luckily for her a night owl passerby saw her and called an ambulance.
What I saw was not the usual routine of faces cut out of bottle shards, bellies opened by knives from their pockets in a fight or something like that. Rita had been violated in an unusual way. Surely she had been raped by a sadist, a sick, mentally deviated person. That someone had torn her vagina, that was where she had lost all that blood. Shreds of skin and flesh hung over her, that maniac must have used metal tools, sharp objects that had left flaps torn apart. I've been doing the night for five years but I've never seen anything like it. I felt like throwing up and had to walk away for a couple of minutes.
I recovered and immediately took her to the operating room, we had to clean everything to avoid serious infections and rebuild at least the essentials to ensure that the bleeding did not resume. We called Gianni in the middle of the night, there were only two of us in the emergency room and we still had various humanity in the waiting room, but Rita had to be operated on immediately, it was already incredible that she was still alive.
I didn't feel like it and it was Gianni who did that job.
The next day I was back on the track and, in the afternoon, I went to the hospital a little earlier to visit her. I had to ask her questions because I had to report it to the police, since I had signed the emergency shelter. Rita was slightly better but was on her third transfusion and was taking pretty strong painkillers. He was no longer in danger of life but he was still not fully conscious, partly because of the medicines and partly perhaps for other reasons that I had no difficulty in understanding.
She told me again what she remembered, it wasn't much more than what she had managed to tell me the night before. He remembered a house, a white leather sofa and three black pyramids, scaled from the largest to the smallest. Engraved above those pyramids, probably in onyx, it reminded of hieroglyphs, evidently that Egyptian souvenir had fascinated her. Rita's memories were like flashes, just images, details. A crystal drop chandelier, an antique writing desk, a Persian carpet with a crystal table on top.
What had happened instead he did not remember at all, after those glimpses that were clearly the interiors of a house, there was a hole and the next image was of her on the ground, of a bloodstain on the asphalt.
Rita was young, she was twenty-three, her head was still confused, her face was still pale, but her physical condition could not hide an extraordinary beauty. A long narrow face, large deep eyes, unfathomable black, short hair. At that moment he did not even remember well what work he did or where he lived but when he arrived at the hospital he had the documents and his mother had already been notified. Her parents lived in Basilicata, she had arrived in Milan a few months ago to seek her fortune in the world of fashion or television. The mother was not very informed and not very much in agreement with that choice to what the head nurse who had spoken to her understood.
I left without having much to write, I limited myself to report the case of suspected, let's say almost certain, rape and the circumstance that the victim was still in a state of confusion and did not seem, at least for now, to be able to recognize the aggressor or to tell the circumstances of the crime. As far as I was concerned, the case was closed and so I handed in the report that the police were waiting for to begin their investigation. The next day Rita would be questioned perhaps in a less polite way, perhaps, who knows, even with better results.
I was thinking to myself about that story while I was having dinner at the hospital canteen, Rodolfo saw me thoughtfully and went over.
“So Peter, the usual delirium last night? How many throats do you cut? " He always took the piss out of me for the kind of clientele I had during the night, but it was usually easy to argue, since Rodolfo spent his days doing autopsies. That Friday, however, I didn't want to play teasing and just greeted him with a grunt.
“Oh my, what a piva you have today! Since you take it so much, I'll tell you what a beautiful black code that happened to me this morning. " I tried to strike him with a look that wanted to invite silence but he pretended it was an invitation to continue.
“I see you are very interested. Well, I said, this morning I got a guy with a hole in his skull, his brain turned to mush. Someone hit him in that spot and cracked his skull in two other places. Do you know what they killed him with? "
"Would you be surprised if I told you I don't give a damn?" Knowing him, there were no civil ways to stop the conversation.
"The cleaning lady found him, she arrived this morning and found him on the ground, half naked, with his skull smashed: a pyramid!" with the work that Rodolfo did he had become a lover of such stories.
“They smashed his skull with a black onyx pyramid, with hieroglyphs and all. The carabinieri told me there was blood everywhere. Then you know, they will never find the killer. But who cares you will say, in fact you're right, he was a cool guy with an apartment in Via della Spiga, surely he must have played games, he had cocaine in his body. It must have been a fag, what do you say? You know what the fashion people are like. Oh well, give one less. Hello, thanks for the company ... ”Rodolfo was leaving, his monologue was over, when a little light clicked in my head.
"Pyramid? Did you say a pyramid? " I stopped him taking him by the arm when he was already leaving.
“Did you wake up suddenly? Goodmorning doctor! Anyway yes, a pyramid of ten centimeters on each side, black onyx, with hieroglyphs, you know like a souvenir. The guy had three, smaller and smaller, they killed him with the bigger one. " The story corresponded and Via Gesù is a side street of Via della Spiga, now the few things that Rita remembered made sense.
"Have you seen the pictures? White sofa, Persian carpet, a crystal table and a drop chandelier? " I gave him everything I remembered about Rita's story to see if my suspicion was just the birth of a sick fantasy of mine.
"But aren't you the killer? Oh, yeah, that's not possible, you were on shift last night. But how the hell did you guess all those details? " How did I do it already?
"But Rodolfo, you don't understand a pipe, it's the typical house of a fag who works in the fashion industry, I really have to explain everything!" Rodolfo laughed and went away convinced that I was a guru in terms of designer houses.
At that moment I made the decision. Wrong? Right? I certainly made the most dangerous decision for me. I immediately went to Rita and advised her not to confuse the police with those memories she had told me and which of course I had not mentioned, as they were not relevant. With her I never had the courage to talk about what had happened to her, about what they had done to her. I explained that her confusion had made her flash memory that had nothing to do with the shock that was responsible for her blackout. She listened to me, surely she didn't say anything to the police, said she didn't remember that evening and that she only had memories since she found herself on the ground in a pool of blood.
The police investigated the murder with the pyramid. With the police they did not exchange information on the two cases, as they seemed to have nothing to do.
I never saw Rita again, I don't know if after a while she remembered or that black hole in her memory remained forever. What I know is about me and me alone. I then chose to act, for what was in my power, to make sure that two crimes went unpunished, instead of telling what I knew and what I had intuited to the police, I kept silent, I covered up. I can't be sure, I don't even know what happened to Rita, but then, in that moment, it seemed like the right choice.
