¿Han escuchado de la constelación de la Yakana?

Have you heard of the Yakana constellation?

Escuché esta fascinante historia en mi último viaje por las tierras andinas de Perú. Tal era la importancia de estos animales para los antiguos pobladores de la región, que en su honor nombraron una constelación de estrellas.

I heard this fascinating story on my last trip through the Andean lands of Peru. Such was the importance of these animals for the ancient inhabitants of the region, who named a constellation of stars in their honor.

Cuenta la leyenda que esta constelación da la “fuerza vital” a las almas de las llamas, y tiene la forma de una llama que camina por el río (la Vía Láctea).

Legend has it that this constellation gives the "life force" to the souls of the lamas, and it has the shape of a lama that walks through the river (the Milky Way).

Cuando estuve en Machu Picchu decidí escapar un poco de la ruta fijada por los operadores turísticos y logré tener un momento más íntimo con estos bellos mamíferos. No desaproveché la oportunidad de fotografiar algunos en este lugar emblemático, ambos símbolos indiscutibles del Peru.

When I was in Machu Picchu I decided to escape for a while from the route set by the tour operators and I’ve gotten a more intimate moment with these beautiful mammals. I didn’t miss the opportunity to photograph some in this emblematic place, both indisputable symbols of Peru.

Imaginé con certeza que ese lugar era un sitio privilegiado para la observación de los astros, donde seguro la Yakana se muestra imponente sobre el fondo oscuro de la noche.

I imagined with certainty that this place was a privileged site for observing the stars, where the Yakana is surely imposing on the dark background of the night.
