A Return Trip to Harboro' Rocks in Derbyshire

The last time I was here I was pressed for time, so I made a return trip to explore a bit more, starting at the derelict farmhouse at the beginning of our walk.

We carried on our walk to Harboro' Rocks which are made out of Dolomite Limestone and overlook Brassington in Derbyshire. At the rocks we spotted a cave. Apparently, Daniel Defoe, the author of Robinson Crusoe came here on tour. He wrote about someone living in the cave in his book 'A tour thro the whole island of Great Britain'. I did pop into the cave and saw a footpath leading somewhere but decided not to follow it.

There's still the remains of an old lead mine nearby. Golconda Lead Mine dates back to the 1700s. Apparently, Golconda is a name used for wealthy mines, after the famous Indian Golconda diamond mine. After closing in 1913, the mine was reopened in 1915 to mine baryte until 1953.

After a walk around the place, we walked up to the summit of the hill to the trig point. We came across a chair made out of rock. I presume it was man made and offered a welcome resting place while looking at the lovely views of Derbyshire below. Ha ha ... not quite as there is a bloody factory right next to the rocks. That's the only thing that spoils this beautiful spot.

It was an interesting walk with everything I love, a derelict building, rocks, a cave, interesting rock formations, a trig point and wonderful views. Can't beat it!
