Preparation for Rooftop Gardening

Roof farming has been my hobby for many days but time has not done anything for the sake of opportunity. On the other hand, since I live in a rented house, it is not advisable to cultivate on the roof there. There is plenty of space around our village house and on the roof for production. In the lockdown, office has been closed for more than three months. So I have found a suitable time to utilize and fulfill my hobby. In this lockdown time, I do basically three types of work at home.

    1. Engage myself in roof farming and all kinds of agricultural work and keeping the surrounding yard clean and tidy.
    1. Assist the children who are at home in their studies.
    1. Blogging in the hive blockchain.

I will try to give a detailed description of how I prepared the soil and started the work by collecting suitable materials for roof farming. On the other hand, I have started bioflock method for fish farming which I will describe in another day. Let's get started

Planing first

At first I made plans. I have in my head what kind of farming I can do. Gradually I started watching videos from YouTube and other platforms. Watching the video I realized what kind of arrangements are needed for my area, roof and yard. I have found the way how easily I can cultivate vegetables. I have basically seen many tutorials where one by one has described the method of cultivation in different ways. I chose a few methods after many visits and started farming through these methods. In terms of planning I have evaluated how much time I can spend here and at what low cost it can be done. The thought and plan first then the work. I basically used some sacks lying around the house to save on costs. And I didn't have to go anywhere else for the soil. I cut the soil from the yard next to me and prepared the soil with the help of my brother and nephew.

It goes without saying that I did not use chemical fertilizers to prepare the soil. For the most part, I prefer dung and organic fertilizers because I know that organic fertilizers are very good quality fertilizers for their nutritional and eco-friendly properties. I looked for compost manure in the nearby shops but did not find it. I realized that the compost manure in this area is actually made by the farmer themselves. So the first thing I do is make a big hole in the house and put all the leftovers in that hole. I started and instructed my family members to put the variety of vegetables wastage and other wastage in the hole. High quality compost fertilizer has been made in that hole. If the soil is made with compost manure, the quality of the soil will increase a lot and the yield will be better. The point to be made here is that since cultivation is done in less soil and in less time, it is important to use soil fertilizer and compost fertilizer to improve the quality of the soil.

Soil preparation:

To prepare the soil we collected three types of soil from the surrounding courtyard. I have collected some soil from the yard, some from the adjacent land. As a result, we have got three types of soil. Clay, etal loam and sandy loam. I have mixed some amount of chemical fertilizer and home made compost fertilizer with this soil. Also crushed mustard oil mixed in the soil. In this way, all the elements that are deficient in the soil will be found properly. We have loosened the soils well and filled them in sacks here. Since there is dung and other fertilizers here, we leave the sacks for more than two weeks so that all the gases are removed and there is no damage to the seedlings.

It will be suitable for planting only after 14 days of soil preparation. And during this time we started producing seedlings from small beeches for germination. Because our plan is to take some small seedlings from the packet and put them in sacks when the soil is ready. So I put the seeds in the packet so that I can germinate and get small seedlings within 14 days. With two types of soil in two parts, we continue the work in this way. About 3/4 days have passed in 14 days and hopefully soon all the seeds will be germinated where a few trees are left to germinate. And hopefully that will happen soon. So after a while I will come back with my update. There was no work in these 3/4 days so I brought some seedlings and planted fruit seedlings especially grapefruit, guava, jackfruit, litchi etc. And this is how my activities are going on.

I think it's a really good idea, I have a small rooftop garden where I used to grow green chilies. But the worst problem I have faced when the chilli tree started to grow. A lot of Sparrows used to come and ruined them. So later I took some steps for the bird and it worked for a few days...

Anyway, nice initiative...

What happened next? Have i got out of sparrow problem? Some birds help in initiating fruit growth. I heard about a Bangladeshi who went to Japan for higher study. And during his about 4 years PhD program, he picked tomato from a single tree on the roof. How advanced and productive farming!!! You did not bought a single tomato in that time. From a single tree, he distributed some to friends, mates and neighbours
