A Witch in my Garden: Planter Ant - Cephalotes Artratus [EN] // Una Bruja en mi Jardín: Hormiga Planeadora - Cephalotes Artratus [ES]

The lemon tree we have in our garden is blossoming again, flooding our yard with that peculiar and delicious aroma of orange blossom, in the same way new shoots of fresh leaves are coming out thanks to the recent rains, but also these giant ants have arrived with them, which are really a bit scary, because a bite from them must hurt even the bones. There are few ants that can be seen in the tree, in the last weeks I've seen about 4 at the same time, which so far does not worry me.

These ants are really big, the males can reach 14mm and the females 20mm. The ants we see here are adult males that go out to collect food for the females and the smaller ones that are in the hives that are near the trees where we can see them. These ants are native to the Amazon rainforest and can be found from Panama to Ecuador, and you will see them in the wooded areas or parks with large numbers of trees.

They are arborists, and they are called gliders since they are experts in gliding from one tree to another looking for food, and they even use it as a safety system in case they slip and fall from a tree. They're also called "ace slider ants" because of their ability to glide through trees, and they're really quite fast to move around, in fact, being able to do these shots for me was a challenge.

They are also scavengers, because you can also find them on the ground collecting bird droppings to take to their cave, another source of food for these ants are the secretions of grasshoppers and cicadas, these excrete a sweet liquid, so it is very common to see these ants where the cicadas are.

A couple of days ago while my mother and I were fixing up the new house for the turtles one of these bit my mother, at the moment she tells me that the pain was horrible, heat, burning and pain was what she told me she felt in the area, but how can I not feel all that if these little ones have strong pincers capable of cutting the bark of the trees. The truth is that these little ones are really amazing.

This is my entry for this week's contest of my dear @adalger #amazingnature, want to know what it's about and encourage you to participate? Here I leave you the link to take a look.
