Hello everyone,

This morning I want to share with us my latest bag design. If you have been following my previous posts, you'll discover I've been trying to learn how to make this type of bag on my own and trust me it hasn't been easy. I try to watch several videos and work on my own in order to learn and this is due to the fact that less people make this kind of bag where I stay and I haven't even seen any or a place to go to for learning. The only available places are outside the state and so I can't let that stop me, I kept on learning in every way I could.

I noticed the last bag of this type I tried to make was very difficult to sew on the machine. Basically I found out there is a machine specially made for sewing this kind of bags and it's called the Leather sewing machine with a cylinder head horizontal and what I have is the normal protex leather sewing machine which means I have to find a way to make it work. From the recent videos I've watched I found out its possible to use Maco instead of the Fibre I used before. Maco is easy to manipulate on the machine and it's not as stiff as the Fibre. Also I found a way I could sew round the edges with allowance. The allowance made the bag go smoothly on the machine.

With all these new knowledge, I decided to try out a new design yesterday and below I'll be showing us how I got it done.

The materials I used include:

  • Maco 2
  • Leather of choice
  • Rope for the short handle
  • Bottom pins
  • Gum
  • Side pins
  • Adjuster

PROCESS

  • The first thing I did was to draw out the pattern, measurements and process on a paper.

  • Next I marked out the measurements on the Maco, shaped it to the desired shape, cut out the leather of choice, applied gum and gummed them together.

  • Next I cut out the stitching strap.for the sides, the longer rope handle and the short rope handle. After that I stitched the short rope handle, pass in the rope, gummed it with the bag as seen below.

  • Here I stitched the leather and lining together, applied bottom pin to the bag, applied magnets to the lining and bag them gummed them both together. Also I joined the stitching strap with the sides as seen below and joined the side with its lining.
