A rare native bird, the wild kookula is found all over the island in swamps and reeds and sometimes in paddy fields. It is not an easy-going bird, as it is often a night-time bird and hides among the reindeer.
Various grains, such as stalk and tree shoots, are predominantly eaten, but insects and nectar have also been observed. Southwest monsoon rains occur between July and August when two eggs are bred in a cage where weed collects.
