Broken heart 💔 syndrome

We are familiar with the term "broken heart". Using this term we usually express someone's mental status following a psychological incident such as break up from a relationship or losing a spouse or life partner. We don't think that the hearts are actually broken. Okay, we may be wrong in some instances. The heart might actually be affected ( !broken) due to certain extreme psychological stress. It is known as broken heart syndrome. In medical language, it is called “stress-induced cardiomyopathy” or “takotsubo myopathy.”

A person, especially a middle-aged female, may suddenly complain of chest tightness and shortness of breath, similar to a heart attack, following sudden emotional stress. We should not overlook it thinking that the chest problem is due to mere emotional outbursts and with time all will be adjusted. The massive surge of stress hormones, e.g. adrenaline may affect the heart muscle leading to a pathological condition called myopathy. In such conditions, the heart can not pump out the blood effectively, leading to symptoms similar to a heart attack.

There are treatments to help a person suffering from broken heart syndrome. So, the affected one should be taken to a physician, preferably to a cardiologist.
