[ENG/ESP] Photo session at Sara Braun Municipal Cemetery (among the 10 most beautiful in the world) / Sesión de fotos en el Cementerio municipal Sara Braun (entre los 10 más bellos del mundo)

After touring Chiloé and Temuco, I ventured to travel to the Magallanes region and the Chilean Antarctic. My first stop was Punta Arenas; the city and inter-oceanic port of southern Chile, known mainly for being the gateway to the famous big island of Tierra del Fuego.

Después de recorrer Chiloé y Temuco, me aventuré a viajar a la región del Magallanes y la Antártida chilena . Mi primera parada fue Punta Arenas; la ciudad y puerto interoceánico de la zona austral de Chile, conocida principalmente por ser la puerta de entrada a la famosa isla grande de Tierra del Fuego.

This city is home to the southernmost secular cemetery in the world: the Sara Braun Municipal Cemetery. This place was declared a national monument in 2012, given its heritage and historical value, and due to its scenic beauty, it attracts tourists throughout the year.

It really is a beautiful place: it is made up of eight streets, delimited by 633 cypress trees, pruned in a style that gives it a particular landscape.

This cemetery is the sixth most beautiful in the world. So, it was impossible not to take advantage of this scenery to take some pictures.

Este cementerio, es el sexto más bello del mundo. O sea, fue imposible no aprovechar este escenario para hacerme algunas fotos.

When I visited this place, the graves were stained with red paint as a result of protests; for the local people, this cemetery is a permanent reminder of the European migration and bloodshed resulting from the Selknam genocide, motivated by gold discoveries in Tierra del Fuego.

Cuando visité este lugar, las tumbas estaban manchadas con pintura roja, como resultado de protestas; pues para la gente local, este cementerio es un recordatorio permanente de la migración europea y el derramamiento de sangre resultante del genocidio Selknam, motivada por los hallazgos de oro en Tierra del Fuego.

Although the cemetery is a beautiful place, it cannot be denied that it is loaded with a painful history for Magellanic people. And although, for many it is a pity that the graves are deteriorated, because it diminishes in a certain way the value of a tourist place; I understand the actions of the protesters and I believe that as visitors we can admire the beauty of the place, but also understand the history that marked the region and empathize with the inhabitants.

Si bien el cementerio es un lugar hermoso, no se puede negar que está cargado de una historia dolorosa para los magallánicos. Y aunque, para muchos es una pena que deterioren las tumbas, pues disminuye en cierta manera el valor de un lugar turístico; entiendo las acciones de los protestantes y creo que como visitantes podemos admirar lo hermoso del lugar, pero también comprender la historia que marcó la región y empatizar con los habitantes.
