Types of coffee and coffee types for all types

Coffee. It is what keeps the world running. I found this topic interesting, so I did a bit of a deep dive into the world of coffee.

I may break this up into several articles, but today were going to look at the types of beans and roasting methods people use.

Brew yourself a coffee and get ready to learn.

Talk about types of coffee beans.

Generally speaking the regions in which coffee grows, will impact the effect on the coffee bean. Most people agree that a copy that is growing at a lower altitude might have a better aroma and taste. Contrary however the beans that grow in a higher altitude, generally speaking has greater flavor.

Here are the various types.

Robusta

This is a type of coffee being that has on average double the amount of caffeine and other types. It's also known to have more of an antioxidant and has more chlorogenic acid. This is the type of coffee being you might find instant coffee and filtered type of coffee blends.

Liberica

This coffee bean gets its name from Liberia, Where it was first discovered. These beings tend to be larger than other types of beans. It's also known to have a smoky aroma and more almond -like flavor.

Arabica

This the granddaddy of them all and represents on average between 60% ~ 80% of all global coffee. Being that has more lipids and more sugar than the other beans, This gives it a sweeter and somewhat better taste that people enjoy.

Talk about types of coffee roasts.

Majority of all coffee Bean starts off as just a raw green bean it has very little value. The magic happens in the roasting. Generally speaking there are a few types of roasts but there are many names and stages.

The Light roast.

Generally known as "the first cracking". This is when the bean undergoes its first reaction and starts to expand. The beam breaks apart "cracks", and then takes on a light brownish color. Generally these are more acidic than the other roasts. But they do have a full aroma!

The Medium roast.

With a medium brown color, but bean has a stronger smell than the light grows, and may look a bit more dry. This roast has a balance of acidity flavors and aroma.

There is a variation on this that is known as a medium dark. This is when some oil is left on the surface of the bean. This is one of the most popular roasts.

The Dark roast.

Generally referred to as "the second crack", this is when the bean is nearly black, it's shiny and oily giving it a very interesting character. Most all the acidity is gone and it is bitter. You are a fan of espresso, chances are good they are using dark roast for it.

Animal poop coffee / intestinally fermented coffees

Yes as crazy as it sounds there is a whole branch of roasting that happens from animals. When specific animals eat coffee "cherries", They then just the pulp but can't break down the bean itself. The digestive system however does alter it, so when it leaves it is much different from when I came in. This process is actually quite fascinating I recommend taking a read. However, these are the various animals that also roast coffee beans for us.

Kopi Luwak // Civet Coffee

This is perhaps one of the more well-known types of animal coffee. And even one of the first! This is a very cute cat almost the same as a weasel and it is indigenous to a lot of Southeast Asian countries such as the Philippines and Indonesia.

Elephant poop coffee

This was born after Sonja witness the Kopi Luwak Process and began experimentally feeding elephants coffee cherries. It's not as good as the Kopi Luwak, nor does it have the health benefits that Kopi Luwak offers. It still fetches about $900-ish per pound.

Bird poop coffee

The Brazilian coffee producer "Henrique Sloper" develop this coffee after they noticed The wild jacu birds destroying their coffee plantations. They did not want to kill the birds, so they took lessons learned from the Kopi Luwak Coffee, and bird poop coffee was born.

Monkey poop coffee

This is a misleading name. The monkey does not actually eat the whole coffee bean, rather it eats all the cherry shell, then spits out the bean. The saliva in the monkey's mouth helps the fermenting process.

Bat poop coffee

Much like the monkey poop coffee, the bat does not eat and poop out the bean. The Central American bat, the artibeus jamaicensis, It eats the cherry on the outside, and saliva starts the fermentation process bean.
