Sunday ... Thor's Day

avatar

Today should be renamed from Sunday to Thursday or better said Thor's Day.

Sunday ... Thor's Day

Sunday ... Thor's Day

Thor is the God of Thunder - in Germanic mythology, Thor is a god, who is associated with lightning, thunder and storms, also known as weather god. Everybody knows the god with the hammer, at least since the Thor movies came out. In Old High German he was called Donar and in German the Thursday is called Donnerstag (Donner = thunder).

Rainy Sunday - Thunderstorms and dark Clouds

Actually, I wanted to get up very early this morning to drive somewhere for a sunrise photoshoot, but thunder and heavy rain knocking on the window blinds convinced me to stay in bed till it got brighter outside.

Rainy Sunday - Thunderstorms and dark Clouds

It was still slightly raining when I had breakfast at about 6am in company of our cats on the balcony, but from the west I could see almost black clouds rolling into our direction, and Thor swung his hammer so that the thunder boomed loudly towards me.
I like Thor and the thunder, but not so much the rain that comes with it.

Rainy Sunday - Thunderstorms and dark Clouds

So I decided to take my photo backpack, get in the car and drive around the lake. "Maybe there are some amazing clouds over the lake or I can take a photo of a lightning" I thought, but all I got was a lot of rain and boring gray skies.

Rainy Sunday - Thunderstorms and dark Clouds

The weatherman in the radio said that the storm clouds would move to the east and the north, to our neighbor state Styria, and at places I could even see blue skies above the clouds.
So I decided to go north, but I should have known that I shouldn't believe the weatherman - it was quite nice and sunny in Styria, although the roads were wet.

Rainy Sunday - Thunderstorms and dark Clouds

Looking towards the mountains in the south I could see dark clouds and the weatherman confirmed that heavy rains and thunder storms were happening at home - isn't storm chasing a funny game? LOL

Rainy Sunday - Thunderstorms and dark Clouds

Of course, I couldn't get any lightning shots today as usual, and the clouds were more or less boring except of some scenes which I'm showing you here in this post.
The rain pelted the car and the streets quite hard, so that the windshield wipers were often too slow, but driving in the rain was also fun.

Rainy Sunday - Thunderstorms and dark Clouds

And with the above shot, which is my favourite photo from today, I want to end this post of a Sunday without Sun. It is still raining outside and I hope your Sunday was or still is nice.

At least, I know more about Thor besides what I watch in the movies.

These pictures are lovely. For me, a day without sun is a great day!

I like the pictures with the heavy gray clouds. There's a kind of beautiful glow such clouds cast on the earth.

My Sunday is just winding down. I hope you have a relaxing day too! 🙂

For photography I lve clouds too - blue skies are for tourists ;) but I don't need the rain.
Thank you very much kindly, @kemmyb, my Sunday is almost over too and in a few hours a new work week will start.

Well, I was hoping for the sky I have had this morning on my way to work - it was burning and I had no chance to take a photo. When I climbed onto the roof of our office building all the color was gone - there will be another day 😃

Thank you so much, JJ, I hope your new week started well and will be great 🌞

Mother nature likes teasing us at times, this morning the forecast aid the rain had passed so I headed out, but they got it wrong as soon as I started walking it started raining, so I gave up and headed home after a while then the rain stopped

Your Sunday does sound like a Thor’s day with him bringing the thunder with the hammer. The huge clouds are massive and amazing.💨

Fabulous shot of the different levels of the mountains in last photo dear Hannes.😊

I could see the clouds formed a couple faces in the fourth photo but not one of an angry god. The face on the right looked like a woman peeking out from the cloud and, towards the left side, a dog’s face.

You could hear thunder all day long, but I didn't see any lightning strikes.

Good morning Jo,

the woman face must have been the Australian Sun Goddess who @kohsamui99 wanted to send over here 😁
The mountain levels have looked much better a minute before I took the shot, but I had to find a place to stop the car ;)

Thank you so much for the rehive and for the goodies and for your always nice words, dear Jo, I wish you a wonderful new week 🌞

Those clouds looked to scary for the Australian Sun Goddess it was to much for her and she stayed hidden behind them dark clouds just peeking out like @redheadpei said, I will sent
Helios the Greek Sun Goddess he will sought it out for @johannpiber

But in any case, I do like them angry cloud shots over them Goatee Mountains and just to make your day this was Byron Bay on Sunday on my walk over the headlands and same today. Have a great week ahead my friend and let me know how Helios preforms his nickname is Titan 🌞

Maybe you should have given the Australian Goddess a !BEER to make her braver - it has always worked for me 😉

Thanks a lot for your help by sending the gods over, my friend, I think Titan is already here because it is dry outside. Let's hope he can chase the clouds away too, so that we have skies like on Byron Bay, maybe with a few more clouds for the dramatic look in the photos.

And thank you very much for your nice comment, @kohsamui99, I wish you also a wonderful new week 🌞

Sunday with no sun, interesting rolling cloud formation against the mountain backdrop though.

Green hills blanketed over, perhaps sounds like the bed would have been a better option, but chasing thunder and lightning with the Thor god seemed more exiting.

Donderdag is spelling in Afrikaans (originating from Dutch) for Thursday, similar not the same 🙂

Here wishing you more sun during August, slowly reaching end of summer months, you need it!

Having such a view from the balcony I think you can not go lightning hunting, they will definitely come to you. I miss a rain, in Bucharest where I live I haven't seen the clouds for two weeks and the temperature is dangerously close to 40 degrees Celsius.
Your photos are, I don't know what word to use, it's beautifully used in all situations, they are different from most I see here. Indeed, the last photo is the most ..., I like it the most.

If you're wondering if the Twitter promotion works, I'll prove it works. There I saw that you published this post.

Well, from the balcony I can see the neighbor house and a lot of sky - I have never tried to photograph lightnings from there, but now you gave me an idea what to try during the next storm 😁

Thank you very much for your kind compliments and that you also like my favourite photo of that day most 😀 Have a wonderful week, @bluemoon, and maybe our clouds will move towards the east and bring some cool rain to Bucharest 🌧️

Cool, the Tweets and the ReTweets work very well it seems. I have been on Twitter for quite some years, but have never used it until this year.

Loved your shots of the clouds @johannpiber, they are superb. Clouds have so many layers of complexity to them - colour, thickness, volume etc. Just as well you did not walk or ride your bike on this morning, you may have enjoyed a shower or two and yes who believes the weatherman anywhere in the world, hahaha. We are too smart for that😜

Hello @angiemitchell,

clouds are cool and you can see anything in the sky, from a mouse to an elephant :) I love these huge cloud formations the storm chasers show in their photos, but see them seldom myself.

Well, I'm not smart enough, I think, because I even believe the weatherman when he says the sun is shining, although I can see it raining 🤣 lol

I also love nice comments and it costs nothing to be kind my friend.
You and I try to reply with the same kindness that we expect to receive from others and if there is a rare ugly one, we simply ignore it.
There is enough trouble in this world and the news is loaded with bad stories, so it is not in our interest to repeat it.

Oh yes, I have seen some of the storm hunter photos and they are incredble. We have no chance of taking any photos like that my friend.
But you still get great potos

Yep, you are right - there's enough trouble and madness in this world and a little kindness doesn't cost anything.

Hahaha, no it's not the police my friend, it is the people. They have all become sceptics an judges and if you are friendlyv to them then they don't trust you. They think that you will either steal something from you, or that you want something from you. When you stand up to offer a standing lady your seat, the other seated persons will look at you as a traitor. The Covid and crime fear is changing the people.

But no worries, as we just continue to stay kind and friendly.

Yes, you are right Hannes, as early this morning there was a knock on our door. It was the electricity meter reader and he told me that the lady next door (another troublesome one that Marian had a big argument with) sent him to tell me that I should come and take a photo of our meter reading while the central meter box was open. For a fee of course.

So I went with him, took a photo of the reading and as I walked back she stood outside her door and falsely waved at me. I politely waved back and continued on my way.

At times the electricity reading on the account that we recieve doesn't correspond with my reading and then I send them the photo. The next month it is corrected. They love to send us "estimated" readings for large amounts that we have to pay and then they correct it with discounts later.

You know what I will say here 🤣

Cheers and thanks.

Such is life, my friend, and they do the same here if someone doesn't tell them the numbers on the meter on time. We have digital meters and don't need to look at them anymore, but you can have a look online to see how much electricity you have consumed.

They also have what they call prepaid meters here Hannes.
They sell electricity tokens at the shopping centers and one gets electricity units according to the amount that you pay. Ten at home one enters the code on the token into the electronic meter.

The problem is that the token amounts for your money decreases all of time, giving you less units for the same price and people are fighting about it. We have had some huge electricity price increases and the poor cannot afford electricity. A sad situation, as the government give the poor a free amount, but it doesn't last for very long.

Cheers and thanks.

0

I don't know if such tokens or similar exists here - never heard of it, but it would be bad if you wouldn't have anymore tokens left but a full fridge.
Your government should adapt the free tokens to the electricity price.

It works like prepaid airtime my friend. We are on prepaid data, so we buy 200 Gigs and it lasts us for 6 months on the two PCs.

They only have the free tokens for the poor that cannot afford the high electricity prices. The rest of us all have to pay. The poor also get a free allocation of water and we are happy about it.

Cheers and thanks.

I don't think we have such here for electricity or water. People and family who don't have enough money get money from the government or they pay directly. Don't know how that works.

200 Gigs for 6 months? I don't know how much they cost, but when my kids play with the Playstation they sometimes use almost 70-100 Gigabytes in an evening. So I'm glad that I have unlimited Internet.

Yeah, a good plan, but you are in a first world country and we are in a third world developing country with a population that is 3 or more times bigger than the population of Austria.
50% of the population here is unemployed and they have no money to pay for services.
So to show their care for the people, the government gives them free electricity and water up to a defined limit. They also give them finacial grants every month so that they can buy food. Child grants are also in place.

Nope, we cannot afford unlimited and that's why we only stick to basics. That's also why I cannot watch many videos and Marian also only uses the data for her students.

Cheers and thanks.

I know that, Zac, I just wanted to explain that I have no idea on how these things work here because I work for the government and I don't know anybody who has no job.

These things should be cheap in a third world country and more expensive here, but it is just the opposite. We could afford higher prices, most people here could afford it, but these things are relatively cheap here.

Amazing that you don't know anyone that has no job Hannes.
I so wish and pray that we could say the same here.
To add to the unemployed numbers, the Covid lockdowns has destroyed many businesses and the people can't get other jobs. So many are now struggling and facing bankruptcy.

There is always hope my friend and that and the Lord is what we cling to.

Oh yes, the development countries are targets for high prices and we are always the last to get anything urgent, such as the Covid vaccines.
We will never get everyone vaccinated here before the end of this year and even into 2022, and the first world countries are stockpiling their vaccines.

I don't know what's going to happen because the fourth wave of covid is estimated to strike us in November.
You know what I will say here.

Cheers and thanks.

Good morning Zac,

that's true, a few of my friends have had no jobs for short time, but everybody I know has work, but you know that I don't have many friends, so that doesn't really count ;)

I don't know how many people here are already vaccinated, but none from my family has got it yet.

The fourth wave will come for us all and I'm curious about the ideas our politicians will come up then.
