Two good Memories (Photo 52 Week #21 Memories)

avatar

There are many memories in my mind, good ones and also bad ones, and I want to share two good ones with you today - who would be interested in bad memories anyway?

This post is my contribution to Week 21 of the "Photo 52" #photo52 Challenge hosted by @wwwiebe / @photo52 (more about the challenge at the end).

Two good Memories
#photo52 Week #21
Hive: Memories - Photo52 Week 21

All photos including Memory #2 were taken within a few days in mid September 2011 at my parent's house in my hometown Oberdrauburg or on the mountain Hochstadel.

Memory #1 - Hideout

This log cabin on the Hochstadel mountain is a perfect hideout from all the stress and hectic which is going on down in the valleys and in the cities.

Apart from family holidays, I have sometimes also spent a few days alone there just to be alone, relax and forget. But to be really alone you have to go before the tourist season begins or after it has ended.

About 40 years ago my father, who is a carpenter, built together with a friend a little log cabin with wood they cut from our forest.

They built it down in the valley where I'm at home and after finishing the main work they numbered every single piece and rent an army helicopter and let it transport the cabin pieces onto the mountain where they rebuilt it like a jigsaw.

Of course, since this time the cabin has grown a little bit, as now we have water supply, a little bathroom with a sink and even a toilet.

In the first years we took our water in buckets from a small brook right behind the next hill and the toilet was in the refuge nearby, but we loved our summers there, as I have already said in former posts about this mountain.

I think you would believe me when I say that my whole family has spent quite a few weeks each summer in this little cabin, but would you believe me that we have been there with our two kids and friends, all together 6 adults and 5 children? It was only for two nights though and we had lots of beer ;)

The Hochstadel mountain is located in the Lienz Dolomites (Gailtal Alps) and is a solitary mountain on the eastern edge of this mountain range. The Peak of the Hochstadel is at 2,681 m (8,796 ft) altitude, and the mountain pasture where the cabin is, is at 1,780 m altitude.

The Treasure

When colour goes home into the eyes,
And lights that shine are shut again
With dancing girls and sweet birds' cries
Behind the gateways of the brain;
And that no-place which gave them birth, shall close
The rainbow and the rose :-

Still may Time hold some golden space
Where I'll unpack that scented store
Of song and flower and sky and face,
And count, and touch, and turn them o'er,
Musing upon them; as a mother, who
Has watched her children all the rich day through
Sits, quiet-handed, in the fading light,
When children sleep, ere night.

by Rupert Brooke

Memory #2 - Whiskey

Although we lost our male Maine Coon cat "Whiskey" about 2 1/2 months ago (Farewell my dear cat), it is a good memory, because for 10 years this cat was a member of our family and we loved him a lot. Whiskey was such a cool cat and he will always stay in our minds, although my kids are already talking of buying a new kitten ;)

You are very welcome!

The Hideout is an incredible memory and a fantastic story. The way your father got it built is incredible. I can only imagine spending time there must be very serene and relaxing. 😀

Sorry to hear about your cat. The loss of a pet is never an easy thing. I want to get another dog but the thought of out living another friend gives me pause.

It's a cool place, but you have to be there before all the others come, it's best before all snow is gone and you're completely alone. Then you can watch the marmots digging themselves out of the snow after hibernation :)
In the summer months you can go up there for hiking and having fun with family and friends, but if you want to have silence and relax I would avoid the summer or at least the weekends ;)

Losing an animal which has accompanied for many years is like losing a good friend, but unfortunately cats and dogs just don't live as long as we do, so we have to live with the fact them leaving us early. It has been about 2 1/2 months now and still we search for him sometimes, but yesterday my family has decided that something new has to come and they have found two newborn kittens one red and one more black, which will soon join our family :)
Losing a dog is certainly different from losing a cat, and I can understand that you have to think more about getting a new one.

Thank you very much @oldmans, have a great week and take care.

Having to use a helicopter to get the cabin parts up to their location must have been fun for your father. It looks like a nice retreat area, how far do you have to hike to get there or can you drive all the way now?

0

avatar

There should be some images of these flights at my parent's house - if I don't forget I'll search for them next time when I'm visiting them.

The hike up there is about 3.5 hours, but there's also a forest road which is very bad to drive, but you can carry more things with you ;)
There was no road when we were kids, so we had to carry everything we needed for 2 weeks on our shoulders.

Thank you so much for your nice comment, @bashadow, have a great day and week 🙂

It definitely looked like a carry it all in place, but I was not sure. It must have been a real wonderland as a kid.

This was a closed road for many years and only the farmers and a few other people like us had a key, but tourists bring a lot of money, so they opened the road for everybody to drive on own risk. But only a few tourists take the risk, so most cars are from local people.

It was a hard time back then, because you really had to think what you need and what is not neccessary. Now it depends on the size of the trunk of your car ;)

Oh yes, for us kids it was a wonderful time up there. I wonder if it would have been the same if smartphones and the internet had already existed.

Have a great week and take care @bashadow 🙂

Love the mountain getaway cabin and the marvellous view Johann. What an adventure for your family when the building supplies were loaded on a helicopter and flown to the mountain to be put together for the cabin.

Whiskey was beautiful but then I’m partial to the Maine Coon cats. I had one I called Houlton. He had dark colored fur. He came to the backdoor of the house when I lived in Whitby, Ontario and came in and never left. Although he went outside, he never left the property. He was declawed and neutered when he arrived. I still miss him. He died suddenly like of an heart attack. My cat Red sort of reminds me of him except for the different fur color.

Nice if you get a couple kittens.🐱They keep each other company if you and your family need to go away for a few days.

Good morning Jo,

yes, it was cool, they had a big net hanging underneath the helicopter and I think they flew 7 times until everything was up on the mountain.

Yeah, I completely understand what you mean. Our Whiskey had some fun with little dogs and as long as they didn't bark he ran around together with them in the apartment, but he hated loud noise - when there were storms and he heard thunder we could find him under a bed ;)

It will be a new experience, because we have never had two of them - will be a lot of fun I think :)

Thank you, Jo, I wish you a wonderful week 🙂

You are very lucky @johannpiber, that you have such a AWESOME cabin with stunning views, and that you can have it just for yourself, when you need it.
I know that losing Whisky was a very sad time for you and your family. But I understand your kids. Whenever we lose cat or dog, my parents always get new one after some time, and its always helped.

I was worried a bit, that I haven't seen your post for a while. Glad you're back.

Good morning @cezary-io,
thank you very much for your very kind comment 🙂

Well, in the past years we have been very at the cabin very, but it is a very cool place and the view is one of the best I know :)

Thank you very much, I have made a post when he died, but I have thought it would suit to "memories" ;)
Our kids and we are missing something that runs around in the apartment, so we have decided now to get two new kittens, which will bring some more fun into our lifes 🙂

It's just a busy time and when the weather is beautiful I prefer to sit on my motorbike after work and whenever I have time. So I haven't done much on the Hive lately, just voting and commenting ... but I was never gone ;)

Thanks a lot again, @cezary-io, have a great week.

What an awesome Hideout! WOW, it must be so fun to have your entire family spend some weeks of summer in that cabin. It has been so worth it to build it up (and the expense of the helicopter to transport the pieces)! The memories gained by each individual in your family are priceless!
Oh goodness... it makes one wonder where Whisky went! Oh, my... I have three Yorkies, I will be devastated if I lost one. I recall losing my first dog Chu-chu when my family moved to another house. Chu-chu probably ran away in an attempt to go back to the old house... and was gone forever. I was 12 then, and to this day I wonder where Chu-chu is.
Thanks for sharing your memories. Have a wonderful week ahead, my friend @Johannpiber, and take care 🥰🌺🤙

Wel, there was very little space in the cabin when all of us five were there, but we only slept and ate there anyway. The rest of the time we have been hiking or otherwise outside :)
That's right, we all have quite a few memories from our summers up there, and most are good ones 🙂

Oops, I should have written that our cat died - maybe I should have used the correct word, sorry for that. Many years ago we have really lost a cat and that was even worse than if she died, so I understand what you mean. Thank you somuch for your kind words, @silversaver888.

I wish you also a wonderful week, @silversaver888, and take care too 🙂

Phew... thanks for the clarification! Then I will no longer wonder about Whiskey, LOL! Hmmmm... I wonder where Chu-chu is? I console myself by imagining that someone found my loving and adorable Chu-chu, took her in, and cared for her more than I could ever do. Thank you for allowing me to share my innermost memory of my dog. 🥰🌺🤙

These are about the same thoughts I had when we lost this other cat. We have been on holidays and the cat was at a friend's apartment for that time.
She loves cats and has some herself, but ours jumped from the balcony on one day and was never found. She has searched for her and we have been for a few weeks every day in that area without finding the cat.
In the end I was thinking the same as you did, that somebody must have found her and cares for her.

You are certainly right and your Chu-chu has had a very good life with a lovely family 🙂

Thank you very much Vincent, it is a really great place indeed, and I would love to be there more often, but this will have to wait until I retire in a few years.

It is about 2.5 months now that our cat has moved to cat heaven, and yesterday my family decided to get two newborn kittens soon - two for one doesn't sound bad ;) We will never forget this big Main Coon cat Whisky though, but we are now also looking forward to the new baby cats which will move in in a few weeks 🙂

Oh yes, there are quite a few stories which I could tell, but unfortunately we didn't have a video camera back then, because if I tell you that I was playing with the goats all day long and stank very bad in the evening would look much better if I could add a video of my mum sending me to the brook to wash myself before she let me into the cabin ;) lol

Your log cabin is just great👍. Its really seems the best place to maintain a distance from stress and crowd and the view around it, 😍just awesome.

would you believe me that we have been there with our two kids and friends, all together 6 adults and 5 children?

In this👆 little home. Really!
Well sometimes its also important to spent time at such a place with your family. As less distance you have in your home as much closer you will be each other.
But it doesn't mean that you always live in a single room.😇
Sometimes we don't interact with each other fully because of this busy world and personal room, personal life.

So its good to spent time in such a place where you get enough time to just focus on each other 😊.

11 people in such a small cabin is hard, but for one or two nights it's OK, although we adults needed a lot of beer ;)
The summers with my family have been lots of fun (we were 4 children) and I will never forget this time.

We have spent a few weekends with our kids in the cabin when they were younger, but now they are almost 18 and don't want to accompany us anymore. That means my wife and I will have a lot of space for us two ;)

These two little kittens will bring new life and fun into our home and as long as the big scratch tree we have bought for our 12 kilo Main Coon is still standing we will always think of Whiskey, never mind which cat is climbing or sleeping on it 🙂

To even be allowed to ask if you are allowed to ask to buy a property on that mountain pasture you have to be able to translate the following and then also say it understandable ;) lol
"Da Blåse geht heit fescht und iba de Bruggn umme kon ma haja scheane Roapa findn hot des sege Mankale gsog."

Well, I hope it won't be like we found our neighbor once at our doorstep - completely drunk sleeping with a broken beerglass still in his hand ;) lol

Right, there are some tests and to work here or in Germany is not as easy as buying a property. I would say, as long as I can go shopping in Austria without having to speak another language than my own and as long as the waiters in the Chinese Restaurants speak German too, I'm fine 😉

Such beautiful memories .... the cabin is wonderful .... it is just in a beautiful place, and I believe you spend a lot of time there.
@johannpiber 😊
If I were you, I would surely spend a lot of time there 🤗
Your cat is very cute ... I'm sorry he's not here anymore. I completely understand you, I love cats too, and I've had a lot of them ... I live next to a road that is really used ... and so that cats end up under the wheels of a car, unfortunately ...
Have a nice day ☀️

If I had more time I would spend more time there, but my kids don't want to go there so often - once a year is enough for them. But the time will come when my wife and I will be living alone and then I think we will be up there much more often :)

Cats are so fast and smart, but it seems they don't see cars - I can see so many dead cats beside the road when I make my trips. That's sad, but we have to live with it. The cats we have had and certainly the next cats are living in the apartment only and no car will ever be able to hurt them, hopefully ;)

Have a great day too, @suzana72, and take care 🙂

I believe that children have their own hobby. If it was the right place when he retires ... and life slows down ... I could do it now ... 🤭
Your cats are lucky, the apartment certainly saved them from meeting the car 😉
We are in the countryside, so they live both inside and outside ... they walk as they see fit ... we listen to them and everyone is happy and satisfied 🤭
Thank you @johannpiber 😊 and you too
Take care and stay safe!

Good morning @suzana72,

yes, they even have their own lifes, but as long as they live with us we care and don't make holidays without them. So they make the rules where we go ;) lol

Somehow it's good when the cats can go wherever they want and come home for sleeping and to eat, and if we were living in the countryside they could certainly go, even if we lived in an apartment, but here in a city I don't want my cats to go anywhere. When they grow up in an apartment they won't miss the freedom anyway, hopefully ;)

Have a wonderful day, @suzana72, and take care 🙂

Yes, for a while our kids are the bosses and we are happy as long as they want to be with us :)

We are looking forward to the new cats - I even haven't asked when they will come, but it can't be longer than a few weeks. I think I will then make a kitten post from time to time ;)

In the end, I got wet, but the day ended well ... although tired, I decided to fast and answer you ... but after that I went to sleep ....
Yes, children are bosses for a while, but then they are missing when they go their own way. 😊
I can’t wait to see your new cats! 😊 I have three and two that came ... but I don't photograph them. I did a couple of them and they were hit by a car ... and then I remembered a belief that taking photos of animals takes away their souls ... 🙄
Have a nice day ☀️

I don't believe that photographing animals takes their souls, because we have always photographed our cats, and the last one, Whiskey, was protographed many times from the beginning on. He was a great cat and became about 10 years old. I don't remember what illness he had, but the average life expectancy of Maine Coon cats is about 12.5 years, so... I know that sounds bad, but we miss him and thinking that way helps too.
The new cats will arrive hopefully soon and will help us also to not forget, but not think so much of missing something.

Have a great day too and take care.

believe it's just a belief ... but from my experience, it turned out to be true. 😊
and we don't paint cats for prevention ...
Those are beautiful years for a cat.
And I hope the new cats will bring you comfort.
Have a nice day 😊☀️ take care too

Of course, I know how you meant it and I know there are many things in life which are like that 😉
The new cats will certainly bring fresh life and fun 🙂

I think we've shared messages previously about a shared love of the mountains. That cabin must have been awesome to stay in, even more so with the story behind it. I just put together a patio in my back yard and thought that was impressive!

Oh yes, I also think we have spoken about the mountains before, Victor 🙂

Yes, this cabin has a nice story and I love it to be there, but since the kids have grown older they have other preferences and so we drive up there only from time to time for a day trip. Hopefully this summer we can manage to spend a few days in the cabin and have a few nice hikes.

My father is a carpenter and the cabin has grown a bit over the years, but down in the valley we have had once a small tool shed with a size of approximately 1 by 1 meter. In 40 years this shed has grown to a little house with a patio included, of course. Even if he was off work he was searching for something to do. He can't sit still and do nothing for longer than a few minutes. So we never wonder when we visit my parents and there's something added or even new ;) lol

Thanks a lot for your nice comment, Vincent @photo52, have a wonderful day and take care.
