Big argument at the temple over stray cats,โดนต่อว่าเพราะไปเลี้ยงแมวที่วัด

Several days ago I walked into the temple by the river to feed some friendly stray cats; I tried to feed them twice a week. But I was stopped by two staff manning a check point near the entrance of the temple. I asked them for a permission to feed some stray cats behind the big model ship. I thought it would be easy as I had been there many times already. To my surprise, the man with short curly hair started an outburst about seeing me walking all around the temple ground and he even saw me at the pier. I was puzzled by this sudden scolding so I just kept on listening to the barrage of accusation of my breaking their rules.

The young girl joined in the scolding and telling me that they got reprimanded by the high ranking monks for letting strangers into the temple. So, I realised some monks had given them a hard time. I told them that I was very sorry for putting them into hot seats. I offered to give them my name and telephone number to be forwarded to the monk so that he could phone me up instead of blaming these two staff. But they would not accept my offer; they said the monk would never phone me up. I was very puzzled by their response.

So, I told them that I did actually know the famous abbot. The curly hair man was looking at me in disbelief. So, I told him the original name of the Head Monk when he was still a low ranking monk in a temple near Chinatown. Then he realised that I did really know this famous Abbott. I didn’t want to tell him more about my connection in the past. I knew this senior monk since he was well known as a sharp astrologer. But we didn’t go to see him for astrological predictions. My close friend’s mother used to be the sponsor for this monk as a young novice. He was from a very poor family so he was ordained as a novice. The kind aunty paid for all his expenses and schooling till he became a monk and started to dabble in astrology. Many monks use astrological knowledge to attract laypeople to support them financially. Strictly speaking, the Buddha never encouraged this kind of study or engagement as this is not the path to enlightenment.

I was quite determined to get pass through their barrier as I could feel that the cats were waiting for me and they were very hungry. These two staff were equally stubborn and still yelling at me “you are not allowed inside the temple. That’s the rule!” I wondered whether they would use force to restrain me and call the the police. I was armed with a bag of cat food; I wondered whether I should respond with force or just running fast towards the cats. I did offer my name and telephone number again but they refused. I offered the bag of cat food to either of them so that one could feed the cats for me. They told me that a monk would be feeding the cats a part of his duty everyday. So, I argued that some cats still looked very skinny and famish that’s why I had to feed them. The whole argument lasted twenty minutes with me standing there being stubborn and requested for a last chance to feed the cats.

The young lady was rather fed up with me and scolded at me. She said “If you were to get COVID,
it would be your own fault. Some monks were in quarantine here.” I told them I would never go near that building. I also had very good protection against COVID. They both shook their heads and said they would get strong words from their boss! I insisted in leaving my name and telephone number so that the monk could talk to or scold at me directly. But they refused my offer again; I did wonder what they were afraid of. But I knew the strength of my background connection and would love to give correct and suppressed information on COVID to the Abbott; so he would know how to deal with infection cases.

I was so glad to have about twenty minutes feeding those hungry cats. Samsi was hiding under the roof of the old shelter; two temple dogs would be having their evening walks in the evening. Other three cats also needed to be fed. I really felt like having a word with the monk responsible for feeding these cats. He was not doing a good job at all. I saw one kitten crying out for food from under a truck. She was about four months’ old and very skinny. The mother cat had disappeared with another kitten; I could recognise them from last month. These cats were really in need of food. Samsi was complaining on her small voices about her life. She’s a loner and got bullied by other cats. She dared not crossed over to the other side where the monk left cat food for other bigger cats. That’s why I had to give her food separately. I told her that life’s getting really tough as the gatekeepers would not allow me into the temple again. I told her to look after herself and learn to hunt those pigeons for food! I had been down crescent and very sad that they would not let me see Samsi again.

เดือนก่อนเราเกือบมีเรื่องทะเลาะวิวาทกับคนเฝ้าประตูวัด ที่เราชอบไปเลี้ยงอาหารแมวเร่ร่อนที่นั่น เราเคยเข้าไปเลี้ยงอาหารแมวมาเกือบห้าครั้งแล้ว แต่คราวนี้เราถูกห้ามเจ้าวัดไปหาแมว คนเฝ้าสองคน เป็นผู้ชายผมหยิกคนหนึ่ง อีกคนหนึ่งเป็นผู้หญิงตัวเล็กๆ เราก็บอกว่าขออนุญาตเป็นครั้งสุดท้ายก็แล้วกัน เพราะเราอุตส่าห์เตรียมอาหารแมวมาแล้ว พนักงานชายผมหยิกก็ว่าเราต่างๆนานา ว่าครั้งก่อนเห็นเราเดินไปถึงท่าน้ำ เขาไม่รู้ว่าเราเดินไปเลี้ยงข้าวแมวที่นั่นด้วย พนักงานหญิงก็ต่อว่า เราทำให้เขาโดนพระด่าว่า ปลาอบให้คนแปลกหน้าเข้ามาเดินในวัดได้อย่างไร ตอนนี้มีพระเณรติดโควิทกันหลายคน เราก็ตอบว่าเรารู้วิธีป้องกันตัวเอง และวิธีรักษาด้วย เราไม่กลัวโควิท และไม่คิดจะไปเดินใกล้ตึกของคนป่วย

เราคิดว่าจะต้องทำอย่างไรจึงจะผ่านด่านเข้าไปได้ เราขอโทษที่ทำให้พวกเขาโดนด่า และขอฝากชื่อและเบอร์โทรศัพท์ให้พระโทรมาต่อว่าเราแทนดีกว่า เพราะเราเป็นคนทำผิดกฎของวัด พระควรจะมาต่อว่าสั่งสอนเรามากกว่า แต่เขาก็ไม่ยอมรับข้อเสนอของเรา และบอกเราว่าพระคงไม่โทรไปต่อว่าเราหรอก เราก็บอกว่าเราก็เป็นเด็กของวัดมาก่อน ขายผมหยิกก็รีบคุยว่าเขาอยู่มาตั้งแต่เป็นเด็กวัดที่นี่ เราก็เลยบอกชื่อพระเจ้าอาวาสสมัยที่เป็นพระที่ได้ยศครั้งแรก และบอกให้เขารู้ว่าต้นทางของท่านมาจากวัดอะไร เขาก็นิ่งไปพักหนึ่ง แต่ก็เกลี้ยวกราดมากว่า อย่างไรก็ไม่ให้เข้า เราก็เลยขอฝากถุงอาหารแมวไปเลี้ยงแมวให้หน่อย เขาก็บอกว่าที่นั่นมีพระเลี้ยงอาหารอมวึทุกวัน เราก็บอกว่าแมวหลายตัวผอมโซมาก แมวอดอยากหลายตัว เพราะอาหารไม่ถึงมัน

เราคิดว่าอย่างไรก็จะขอจนเขาใจอ่อน เรารู้สึกได้ว่าแมวกำลังคอยอาหารจากเราอยู่ แมวคงอดอาหารมาหลายวันแล้ว เราต้องอดทนฟังพนักงานแสดงอารมณ์และพูดเสียงดังใส่เราเกือบยี่สิบนาที เราไม่รู้ว่าเขาจะใข้กำลังกับเรา หรือเรียกตำรวจมาหรือเปล่า เพราะเราดื้อมากยืนอยู่อย่างนั้นเอง และก็บอกว่าขอเข้าไปเลี้ยงแมวเป็นครั้งสุดท้ายเถิด เราขอคุยกับพระ เขาก็ไม่ให้ บอกว่าไม่มีเวลาหรอก เราก็ยืนกรานไม่ยอมขยับ จนเขาเบื่อมาก พนักงานหญิงก็เลยบอกว่า ตามใจ ถ้าอยากติดโควิทก็ตามใจ เราก็เลยได้เข้าไปเลี้ยงแมว. สามสีรอเราอยู่ที่เดิม ที่เราเคยบอกให้มาคอยเราเพื่อกินอาหารตอนเย็น. มันบ่นคิดถึงเราและเข้ามาคลอเคลียพักหนึ่ง. แมวตัวอื่นจำเราได้ เราก็รีบเดินไปให้อาหารมันกิน แต่ละตัวผอมมาก เราเจอลูกแมวอายุแค่สี่เดือนร้องเรียกอยู่ใต้รถกระบะ มันมาตัวเดียวไม่มีพวก จึงไม่กล้าออกมาหาอาหารกิน เราก็ให้อาหารแมว ท่าทางมันหิวโซมากจริงๆ เราดีใจมากที่ได้เลี้ยงอาหารแมวที่ช่วยตัวเองไม่ได้หลายตัว เราบอกลาสามสี ว่าเราอาจจะไม่ได้เจอกันอีกนาน ทางวัดเขาห้ามเข้ามาเดินเที่ยวและเลี้ยงแมวแล้ว

But life is full of uncertainty. The feeling that I have to feed those temple cats is very strong and I feel very bad not being able to help these poor cats. I would somehow try to find a way to feed those cats.
