Busy day:getting the automatic gate working again.

We had to wait for two more weeks before the builders and technicians could come to make the automatic gate working again. From my previous post, we found out that a snake has been shedding its skin inside the motor by the gate. This could have caused the electricity supply to the motor to be stopped and the switch to go out of order. We decided that the quickest solution was to set up a new electricity pole and set up a new wiring circuit across the lawn. In this way, we didn’t have to dig up the old wire around the wall and lawn.

As the lighting system at the front door had to be replaced as well, I decided to experiment with solar light system. Luckily I could get a very good deal of cheap solar lamp at HomePro shop in central Bangkok. The offer was ‘buy one, get one free’ so I bought two at the price of one. There has been a surge in portable solar lightings and lamps during the last few years but prices have recently become more affordable. I have seen my neighbours’ several sets of solar lights around the garden. But I have been wary about the unhealthy aspect of the LED lights; the flickering frequency and blue light are supposed to be harmful in the long run. The lithium battery is also very toxic and these are not recycled in my country, as the recycling technology is quite prohibitive.

That’s why I have been rather slow at adopting the solar lighting system. This time would be my first experiment to see whether these Chinese made solar lights could be cost-effective and efficient in my garden. It was fun testing these new toys out before the builder fix one set on the new electricity pole. Later, I found out that the size of the solar panel was too small to provide the energy for lighting throughout the night. On a sunny day, the solar energy enabled the light to stay on until about three o’ clock in the morning. We already have the old lamp by the lawn with a timer. So, this has been an interesting and learning process for me.

The builders and technicians worked very fast to fix the problem of the dead motor. My cats were hiding and sleeping happily while there were so many strangers inside the house. The weather was stifling hot so I occasionally surveyed the work in progress. My idea of hanging the wire across the lawn by passing the wire via the gaps between big branches saved us some cost and time. The builders had to use extra thick and strong type of wire in this case which made it much safer and easier for maintenance.

The young staff dug a hole for installing a pole while others prepared the pipe which would be transformed into a new electricity pole to which the new solar lamp would be attached. I was quite amazed by their smooth division of duty. These local builders are full time farmers and work as house builders during the dry season and rainy months. They learned most of these skills on the job; only the electrician had a technical certificate from local college. These people are very musical and artistic in nature. They are very different from city dwellers who have no practical or survival skills; though they are highly computer literate. There is such a bIg gap between these city people and deep country folks.

By late afternoon, things suddenly took shape and I was quite hopeful of having a motor working smoothly: sliding the gate whenever I pressed the remote control. The builders knew what they were doing and they worked very hard the whole time. They brought all the heavy machinery and various tool boxes. I wished I had some basic skills on how to repair things around the house by myself. But then I would need to have all the right tools as well. I was so glad that the new electrical wiring system did revive the motor for automatic opening of the gate. The builders and technicians still had to get back to the building site to do some work. They were in the process of building the ninth house for European expat married to local villager so they could retire comfortably in the countryside. I was very interested in these houses and would love to see some of these houses one day.

เราต้องรอช่างและทีมงานสองสัปดาห์ เพราะทุกคนกำลังยุ่งอยู่กับการสร้างบ้านให้ฝรั่งที่แต่งกับสาวท้องถิน เพื่อที่เขาจะได้มาใช้ชีวิตเกษียณได้ในต่างจังหวัด ที่มีอากาศดีและอยู่ใกล้ธรรมขาติ ช่วงที่เรารอให้ช่างมาแก้ปัญหาประตูไม่ยอมเปิดปิด เพราะไฟฟ้าไม่เข้าเครื่องมอเตอร์ ซึ่งอาจจะเป็นเพราะมีงูเล็กเข้าไปลอกคราบในเครื่องมอเตอร์ เราก็มีเวลาไปหาซื้อโคมไฟที่ใช้แผงโซลาร์เซลล์มาติดที่ริมรั้วด้วย ปัจจุบันโคมไฟแบบนี้ราคาถูกลงมาก และออกแบบมาให้ติดตั้งง่าย เราก็เลยไปซื้อแบบที่ขนาดเล็กและราคาที่ถูกเป็นพิเศษ เพื่อเอามาทดลองใช้ในบ้านสวน เขาขายแบบหนึ่งแถมหนึ่ง เราก็ลองเอามาเล่นหนึ่งชุด พอลองมาทดสอบที่บ้าน ก็รู้วาแผงโซลาร์เซลล์เล็กไปหน่อย ทำให้หลอดไฟทำงานได้ถึงประมาณตี3 แต่เราก็พอใจแล้ว มันเป็นการเสริมแสงสว่างที่ประตูบ้าน ทำให้เรามองเห็นตรงจุดที่เคยมืดไปหน่อย เราคิดว่าการทดลองนี้คงจะคุ้มกับการลงทุน

ทีมช่างมาถึงบ้านสวนตอนสายหน่อย. พวกเขาเตรียมตัวและมีเครื่องมือมาดีมาก มีของเต็มรถเลย มาถึงก็เริ่มงานกันตามหน้าที่ คนที่ต้องจุดหลุมเพื่อลงเสาไฟฟ้าใหม่ก็ขุดไป อีกคนหนึ่งก็ตัดเสาเหล็กที่ยาวเกินไป ต้องมีกาทำที่ติดโคมไฟใหม่ กับแผงโซลาร์เซลล์บนเสาไฟฟ้านี้ด้วย งานละเอียดจุกจิกมากเหมือนกัน โชคดีที่ทีมช่างใจเย็นและทำงานละเอียด เราก็ต้องคอยชี้เป้าหมาย ว่าจะเอาสายไฟฟ้าเส้นใหม่ๆเดินผ่านต้นไม้ต้นไหนบ้าง งานนี้เราตัดสินใจให้เดินสายไฟฟ้าลอยในอากาศ เพื่อให้ง่ายต่อการใช้งานและซ่อมแซมในอนาคต ถ้าจะทำแบบเดิม ช่างต้องขุดดิตรอบสนาม รื้อสายไฟเก่า แล้วเดินสายไฟฟ้าใหม่หมด นั่นจะเป็นงานช้าง เสียเวลา และเปลืองเงินมาก เราจึงให้เดินสายไฟเส้นใหม่และติดไฟหน้าบ้านใหม่ด้วย เราให้พาดสายไฟฟ้าไปที่ง่ามต้นไม้ใหญ่สองต้น ทำให้ประหยัดเสาไฟไปสองเสา งานก็เสร็จเร็วขึ้น

เวลาที่พวกช่างไม่แน่ใจว่าเราจะเอาแบบไหน เราก็ต้องลงไปดูแลกำกับเป็นครั้งคราว เราอยากปล่อยให้เขาทำงานกันอย่างสบายใจ พวกช่างเริ่มชินกับวิธีการทำงานของเรา ที่ค่อนข้างจะลุยและเข้าถึงปัญหาด้วยตัวเอง เราอยากมีความรู้เรื่องงานช่างมาก โดยเฉพาะงานด้านระบบไฟฟ้า เวลามีปัญหาง่ายๆ เราจะได้แก้ปัญหาด้วยตัวเองได้ ส่วนงานช่างไม้นั้นเราอยากจะเรียนรู้ในอนาคต จะได้ทำเก้าอี้นั่งเล่นในสวนเองได้ เราอยากโบกปูนได้ด้วย แลดูไม่ยาก แต่เคยลองทำแล้วมันยากมาก

กลุ่มช่างนี่ มีคนเดียวที่จบช่างเทคนิคไฟฟ้า นอกนั้นเขาเรียนรู้จากประสบการณ์และจากการทำงานจริงๆ ปกติธรรมดาเขาเป็นชาวนา พอมีเวลาว่างก็มารับจ้างทำงานสร้างบ้าน คนพื้นบ้านที่นี่มีความเป็นอิสระมาก และส่วนใหญ่มีความเป็นศิลปินมากกว่า คนในเมืองใหญ่ๆ เราคิดว่าคนเหล่านี้จะสามารถอยู่รอดได้ ในกรณีที่มีสงครามโลก หรือมีความวุ่นวายล้มเหลวทางเศรษฐกิจ เพราะพวกเขามีความรู้ความชำนาญในการหาอาหารตามธรรมชาติ. แต่คนในเมืองจะอดตายกันหมดเพราะเล่นคอมพิวเตอร์เป็นอย่างเดียว เราก็หวังว่าตนเองจะเรียนรู้ทักษะในการอยู่รอดได้ทันท่วงที อนาคตที่กำลังจะมาถึงมันน่าตกใจและเหนือการคาดคิดมากนัก

Since these people worked very hard and fast under hot weather without any complaints, I gave them some money to enjoy cold drinks and ice cream at the little shop in the village. I have been very lucky to have the support of these nice and kind villagers who always came to my rescue whenever I needed them. I felt very privileged that they thought of me as one of their friends. You could never build up a close relationship with builders in Bangkok. People in far away countryside still have their spiritual contact with the land and spirits among trees and nature. They know that money is not the most important thing in life; it is just a means for living a more comfortable life.
