Thai Photo Contest: flower photography, ภาพดอกไม้

This is my entry for #thaiphotocontest75 on flower photos hosted by @thaiteam. These photos were taken at the morning market in Nongkhai in last November on Loy Kratong festival day. So, there were many kinds of flowers on display with ready made flower-floats for the evening ceremony by the river. We call these small containers with flowers, candle and incense ‘Kratong’ which means something that can be floated on water.

The Loy Kratong day falls in the full moon day on the twelveth month on the lunar calendar. This year Loy Kratong festival was on 31 October which was a Saturday. Being a full moon day, that day was considered a special holy day for Buddhists. Many elderly people would go to perform morning Dana at local temples: to offer food to monks and pay respect to Buddha statue. All the monks would gather in the main hall to chant long Buddhist texts and give special blessings to laypeople in the morning.

Full moon day is an auspicious day for doing positive activities and starting new projects as we believe that there would more good supporting vibes on that day. Loy Kratong day gives people the opportunity to pay respect to the mother river (Pra Mae Kongka in Thai). Thai people are very superstitious so they believe that the river has guardians or local spirits looking after the whole surrounding area. So, it is wise to pay respect and express gratitude to the river guardians for providing us with water for our survival and livelihood.

Colourful and bright flowers would be loaded into the banana leaf Kratong. Flowers are very essential and symbolic in all kinds of ceremonies as in praying ceremony, ordaining ceremony, in religious celebrations and rituals. The candle and incense would be lit up before people making a prayer and a wish; then the Kratong would be floated on the river. Nowadays people make their kratongs from organic material like banana leaves or bread. But it would be really nice if all kratongs on sale are made from degradable and organic materials.

วันนี้เราขอนพเสนอรูปภาพดอกไม้ที่ เราบันทึกไว้ที่ตลาดเข้าในหนองคาย ช่วงวันลอยกระทงที่ผ่านมาในเดือนตุลาคม วันพระที่พระจันทร์เต็มดวงในช่วงนํ้าหลากเพราะเป็นปลายหน้าฝน ช่างเหมาะสำหรับการลอยกระทงจริงๆ เวลาจุดธูปเทียนแล้วลอยกระทงไปบนแม่น้ำ เราจะเห็นแสงเทียนสะท้อนบนนํ้าลอยไปเป็นสาย ยิ่งถ้ามีกระทงลอยไปด้วยกันมากก็จะยิ่งดูสวยงามมาก เราชอบดูดอกไม้ที่วางขายในตลาดในวันพระใหญ่ ตามแผงจะมีดอกไม้สดหลายชนิดสีสวยสดใสมากมาย ดูแล้วสดชื่นมากในตอนเช้า

เราไม่เคยทำกระทงเองเลย เพราะคิดไม่ออกว่าจะมำอย่างไร วัสดุก็หายากในเมือง แต่พอไปเห็นชาวบ้านนั่งทำกระทงด้วยต้นกล้วยและใบกล้วยแล้ว ก็เริ่มเข้าใจว่าต้องใช้ความประณีตและความอดทนมากเหมือนกัน เราไม่คิดว่าเราจะทำได้ เพราะเราคิดว่าคงทำใบไม้และดอกไม้ชำรุดมากมายกว่าจะทำกระทงเสร็จ เราจึงอาศัยใก้คนอื่นทำกระทงดีกว่า แล้วตอนเย็นเราก็ไปลอยกระทงที่ริมแม่น้ำกัน เราไม่เคยไปลอยกระทงที่ในบริเวณงานของหมู่บ้าน เพราะคนมากันเยอะมาก และจะเปิดเพลงเสียงดังเกินความจำเป็น เราก็ไม่เข้าใจว่าทำไมคนอื่นทนอยู่กับเสียงดังขนาดนั้นได้อย่างไร เรทคิดว่าคนสวนใหญ่คงเป็นโรคหูตึงกันโดยไม่รู้ตัว

เราอยากปลูกไม้ดอกหลายอย่างในสวน แต่ต้องยกเลิกเพราะไม่มีเวลาดูแล และที่สวนมีแมลงและเพลี้ยเยอะมาก กุหลาบที่เพื่อนเคยให้มาสี่ต้น ก็โดนแมลงกินจนหายไปหมด เราจึงต้องทำใจปลูกแต่ต้นไม้ที่ทนต่อสภาวะอากาศและแมลง แต่ดอกไม้มีความหมายและความสำคัญมากสำหรับใช้ในพิธีกรรมต่างๆ และมีผลต่อจิตใจของคนมาก เราคงจะมีดอกไม้มากมายในสวนสักวันในอนาคต
