Wednesday Walk: railway station on a wet day,สถานีรถไฟ
This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. The monsoon rain has been inundated Bangkok and other parts of the country causing severe flooding in many provinces. The latest factor of anxiety for most commuters is the frequent protests taking place around the skytrain stations. So, planning the time and route to get to the Hualamphong railway station becomes very important as I could be caught without any underground trains or buses operating without any warning.
The morning rain has just stopped and only slight drizzling tried to tease dreary people without umbrellas. There seemed to be more people at the railway station as there would be a long holiday around the end of the month. The queue was not that long and I could get my train tickets in less than ten minutes. There was a stronger presence of policemen which might be due to the adhoc nature the mobs’ protests. The leaders would announce the protest venue on social media on the same day of the protest. This tactic has created headache for the police as they had to play catch-up with the various mobs.
This old railway station always conjured lots of deep emotions and memories of my childhood. This was where one of my uncles told me that he almost got hit by the allied bombing during the Second World War. The sound of the dropped bomb frightened local people around the station. My uncle saw one rickshaw owner who was in such a panic that he kept jogging on the same spot without being able to move forward. He also saw people suffering from injuries due to the explosion. I always loved to hear stories about the war and how my elderly relatives survived during the war.
There used to be a big round bunkers in front of the railway station where people could run to hide from bombing. Nowadays that round dome was gone and a small garden has replaced the historical structure. But they still keep the three-headed elephant statue.
My grandmother house was where the new motorway has been constructed next to the railway station. This caused a lot of anguish within me as all my best memories of childhood were nested among the narrow lanes with dark haunted tunnel and the old witch’s house in the area. I did not take any photos of the old house and surroundings years ago as I never thought drastic changes could ever take place there. I thought all the old buildings would stay there forever.
So whenever I go to Hualamphong station, I would take some more photos just in case it will disappear in the future. Those old buildings opposite the railway have remained for over a hundred years. Along the old narrow lane of the old days, there were lots of old shop-houses and some grand old architecture. I used to enjoyed walking along that narrow lane looking up at those beautiful buildings. I think I owed my good taste to these old buildings.
I found out after I got my train tickets that the underground station was already closed because of the mobs’ movement quite near the area. So, I had to cross the busy junction along the traffic light signals. The traffic was not heavy but all cars came along at full gallop. This gave me the chance to take photos of the station from different viewpoints. But the sky was grey and sad as dark clouds had been conjured,as if by black magic, to descend onto unwitting majority of ordinary people who have been trying to keep afloat among waves of financial difficulties. I hope that history will not repeat itself as the endings would be too tragic. I pray quietly and keep hoping that common sense and compassion will prevail.
Wishing you peace, good health and prosperity.

You captured lovely photos for Wednesday Walk. I can see by the wet streets and dark clouds you are having lots of rain.
It would have been nice to have photos of your grandmother’s house but hindsight is great.
Hopefully the difficulties in your country will clear up soon Kaminchan.🙏
