Malefica is a young and beautiful fairy with huge eagle wings that lives in the Páramo, a fantastic kingdom within a huge and great forest very close to a human kingdom. As a child, she met and quickly became friends with a young peasant named Stefan, who lived in poverty, with a stable as his home, and who dreamed of living in the castle of the human kingdom one day. Like Malefica, he too lost his parents. As they grew up, they both fell in love, and even culminated in a kiss of true love at age 16. Later, they ended up drifting apart due to Stefan's progressive and unbridled ambition. Because of this, over time, he stops visiting her, ending the relationship.
One day, Henry, the then king of the castle decides to conquer the Swamps, but Malefica rises as a fierce protector of his home and together with his army ends up defeating him. King Henry, defeated and humiliated, falls ill and decides to reward with the hand of his only daughter, Princess Flor, and also with the throne to anyone who succeeds in killing Malefica. Before such a tempting proposal, Stefan returns to the Moor and warns Malefica about the threat of the King Henry; both spend their time together as they did before and during their conversation, Stefan gives Malefica a sleeping pill and falls asleep. Stefan tries to kill her, but for some reason (probably because of the few memories of what was once his love for her) he is unable to do so, so instead he cuts off her wings and takes them off with iron (a substance lethal to fairies) and presents them to the dying King Henry as proof that he has murdered her. King Henry, very grateful for this, grants Stefan the gift of becoming the new king by marrying his only daughter, Princess Flower. With her heart torn apart by Stefan's betrayal, in addition to the loss of her wings, Malefic starts building a dark kingdom in the Swamps and becomes a perfidious, sinister and evil witch. She takes a raven, Diaval, as her only companion and confidant, to be her wings and watch over the kingdom; often she transforms him into man and other animals when he needs it.
