The town hall. The flag is flown half mast because today is the funeral of the last surviving Mannerheim Cross of Liberty recipients, Tuomas Gerdt. He passed away in Helsinki on Nov 1 2020 at the age of 98. The Mannerheim Cross of Liberty is the highest military honor in Finland. Tuomas Gerdt was a runner in a rifle company. He was awarded the cross in July 1942 for three actions: traversing difficult terrain under heavy fire to request artillery support for his company, volunteering to lead a successful counter-offensive and for carrying a severely wounded fellow soldier to safety under heavy fire. Then-Sgt. Gerdt was wounded three times during the Continuation War.
