Showcase Sunday: Artjärvi + Dead Volvos Society

avatar

I'd like to share a post I made about the small former municipality of Artjärvi and some wonderful carrions of Volvos I found rusting away in the yard of an abandoned house. There were only Volvos. One of them had lichen growing on it. I've never seen such a thing as a car growing lichen on it.

Here's a link to the original:

I drove down to the former municipality of Artjärvi again. This time I took many more photos than last time.

Stopped by a river a short distance before the municipal center. With a population of only 1,200 Artjärvi was unable to remain independent. It was abolished and the area joined the small town of Orimattila (pop. 15,000).

I think that was put in front of the door to keep vandals out.

I really wasn't expecting to see a bed and breakfast in such a small place. You can do hiking and kayaking here. And people might need a place to stay during family functions when too many people are invited to stay for the inviter to put them up. When my maternal grandparents passed away, both times my wife and I and many other relatives had to stay in a hotel in the village where they lived. There wasn't enough space in their house for everyone. My daughter being the smart cookie she is immediately suggested that truck drivers must make up a large portion of the guests. When the regulations say they have to stop for the night, then they have to.

We spotted a couple of swans. The municipal center is surrounded by three lakes and this was one of them.

I took these on our way from the lakeshore.

As we were driving home we decided to stop by the abandoned house with all the dead Volvos in the yard.

Remember this?

The storage building in the yard?

This one has lost its soul: the engine.

IMG_4002 2.JPG

Why is it on its side? No passengers. Only junk inside.

Marvel at this engineering masterpiece or what's left of it.

I love this one with all that lichen growing on it! It's fantastic!

The house from the other side

A forest Volvo.

A dog started barking very loudly in one of the neighboring houses, which is why I chose not to go and examine that car more closely.

The sign warns of snow falling from the roof. What about the cars on their side?

Time to go home.

So, this is where Volvos go to die, their final resting place. It's a most wonderfully pleasant and gorgeous scenery, so it wouldn't be a bad location for a Volvo to lay down, and spend an eternity there. Some of them still look in decent condition, so a restoration project could feasibly bring them back to life :-D

Oh, I agree that some may be salvageable. But others were mere carcasses with the soul - the engine - already gone. :)

I'm imagining a project car, taking that old Volvo body, and putting in another engine and mechanical bits into it, maybe a V8. That sounds like fun, though I'm equally happy to leave from there, and be a part of nature ^_^
