[ENG-ESP] Visitando el Castillo de San Antonio de la Eminencia | Visiting the Castle of San Antonio de la Eminencia
Español | English
Hello beautiful community💕 I hope you are doing well. Today I went to a nice place located in the state of Sucre in Venezuela. Knowing new places always fills me with enthusiasm and happiness. Besides that the view of this place is really beautiful because you can see the whole city including the sea.
The Castle of San Antonio de la Eminencia is a fortification built in the 17th century in the city of Cumaná, with the intention of protecting the city from the constant incursions of English, French and Spanish corsairs. In addition, it has the shape of a star with 4 points each one oriented towards one of the cardinal points. Built in coral stone, its walls of two meters thick, and a powerful artillery, remained in service well into the nineteenth century. It has a dungeon and cannons called culebrinas. From the castle you can see the Gulf of Cariaco and the Araya Peninsula. It is also connected to the city by tunnels and passages.

Like many other fortresses this one served at some point as a prison, José Antonio Páez and José Tadeo Monagas, among others, were imprisoned there. In 1929 an earthquake caused serious damage to the castle, but it has been restored since then and in 1965 it was declared a National Historic Monument. It is worth mentioning that this castle has a museum, unfortunately due to the quarantine situation it is not open to the public, but in spite of that you can still enjoy the beautiful view that the San Antonio de la Eminencia castle gives us.
