HOW I MADE A LOVELY KAFTAN WITH EMBROIDERY USING ADIRE KAMPALA MATERIAL.
Good morning to you all, it's my pleasure to be here again this morning sharing my craft with you.
This morning i will be sharing with you how i made another lovely kaftan with an embroidery using adire kampala material.
Let me take you through a brief history of how this material come into existence.
Kampala Adire in the Nigerian Yoruba language means tie and dye, which is a traditional hand-painted cloth on which patterns are made by tying and stitching with raffia or cotton thread, or by using chicken feathers to paint cassava paste on the cloth which then acts as a resist dye, much like the wax method used on batiks.
What has Adire got to do with Kampala – the capital of Uganda? The Adire Kampala became popular during the time of the Kampala Peace Conference to settle the Biafra war in Nigeria and hence the name.
Adire Kampala was manufactured by individuals with no prior knowledge of dyeing.
This textile with its interesting political connotation, as well as the innovation in its production demonstrates how the creation of traditional textiles has evolved over time in Nigeria.
Below are the process of how i got it done.
MATERIALS USED
- TEXTILE ( ADIRE KAMPALA)
- Thread
- Paper stay
- Button
MEASURING AND CUTTING PROCESS
Like I've always said, in getting a male dress done, the following measurements should be considered, shoulder, chest, sleeve, length, neck before proceeding to cutting of the fabric.
In cutting the fabrics, i folded the material, then take the measurements, the neck, the shoulder, shoulder rest, arm hole considering how fat the person is, then the chest adding allowances and same as length.
SEWING PROCESS
Firstly I folded the allowances added to the sleeve and top length and sew.
After the embroidery has been done, then i joined the shoulder and back landing.
Thereafter, I joined the sleeve, closed the body leaving space for side pocket and closed the sleat.
I must say I'm impressed with your work. Where do you work, can you make some for me?
