The power of memory - El poder de la memoria

Today in the afternoon I was talking with my wife about the situation that is being experienced with the pandemic and how it is starting to play tricks on our moods, especially my wife's. She spends all day in our home taking care of the girls without having any contact other than by phone with their friends or family. When I go to work Monday through Friday I come out of confinement and while I try to take all the precautions, I see my co-workers with whom we have minimal interaction.

Hoy a la tarde conversaba con mi esposa sobre la situación que se está viviendo con la pandemia y como comienza a jugar una mala pasada en nuestros estados de ánimo, sobre todo de mi esposa. Ella pasa todo el día en nuestra casa al cuidado de las niñas sin tener contacto más que telefónico con sus amigas o familiares. Yo al ir a trabajar de lunes a viernes salgo del encierro y si bien trato de tomar todos los recaudos del caso, veo a mis compañeros de trabajo con quienes tenemos una mínima interacción.

While we try not to hear too much news on the subject, we try to be informed, especially since both my wife and I have our parents living in cities that are just under 100 kilometers from our home.

Si bien tratamos de no escuchar demasiadas noticias sobre el tema, tratamos de estar informados, sobre todo porque tanto mi esposa como yo tenemos viviendo a nuestros padres en ciudades que están a poco menos de 100 kilómetros de nuestra casa.

In the face of this reality and the news of saturation in our health system, my wife was very distressed and it is no wonder. We have been isolated for many days without seeing our affections with all that this causes. To give you an idea, both my parents and my in-laws have seen our little girl who is now 5 months old only twice.

Ante esta realidad y las noticias de saturación de nuestro sistema sanitario, mi esposa se angustió mucho y no es para menos. Llevamos muchos días aislados sin ver a nuestros afectos con todo lo que ello provoca. Para que se den una idea, tanto mis padres como mis suegros han visto a nuestra pequeña que ya tiene 5 meses solo en dos oportunidades.

Seeing her low mood and her great distress, I proposed to try to find some positive energy, looking for nice moments we have lived. I am convinced that the human mind has great power and if when we feel bad we try to place good thoughts of situations we have enjoyed, we can help reverse those bad thoughts.

Al ver su bajo estado de ánimo y su gran angustia, le propuse tratar de buscar algo de energía positiva, buscando lindos momentos que hayamos vivido. Soy un convencido de que la mente humana tiene un gran poder y si cuando nos sentimos mal intentamos colocar e ella buenos pensamientos de situaciones que hayamos disfrutado, podremos ayudar a revertir esos malos pensamientos.

This exercise and the meditations with sounds of nature, I usually do them every time things get out of hand.

Este ejercicio y las meditaciones con de sonidos de la naturaleza, los suelo hacer cada vez que las cosas se me escapan de las manos.

This is how I proposed to remember our trip to Brazil in 2019. To do this we were passing around the photographs of the different places we visited and how nice we had. As we were passing the photographs and remembering those wonderful days I began to notice how his mood improved and I began to see smiles on his face when he remembered some funny anecdote.

Le propuse así recordar nuestro viaje a Brasil del año 2019. Para ello estuvimos pasando las fotografías de los diferentes lugares que recorrimos y de lo lindo que la hemos pasado. A medida que íbamos pasando las fotografías y recordando esos maravillosos días comencé a notar como su estado de ánimo mejoraba y comenzaba a ver sonrisas en su rostro al recordar alguna anécdota graciosa.

We reviewed many photos and even read our travel log that we wrote at the time where we left captured on paper the sensations we had on that wonderful journey.

Repasamos muchas fotos y hasta leímos nuestra bitácora de viaje que escribimos en su momento donde dejamos plasmados en papel las sensaciones que tuvimos en ese maravilloso viaje.

Obviously my strategy to try to make her feel better gave the expected results and I could see her smile again.

Obviamente mi estrategia para intentar hacerla sentir mejor dio los resultados esperados y pude verla sonreír nuevamente.

After sharing these beautiful memories I asked him to tell me which would be the place he would like to return to and to put our energies into it so that as soon as possible we could return. Without a doubt the place chosen was Ponta Das Canas.

Después de compartir estos lindos recuerdos le pedí que me contase cual sería el lugar al cual le gustaría volver y que pongamos nuestras energías en ello para que tan pronto como sea posible pudiésemos regresar. Sin dudas el lugar elegido fue Ponta Das Canas.

After finishing our conversation and seeing that her state of mind responded favorably I proposed to play a board game as a family and thus manage to spend an afternoon not only with nice memories, but also with a present that helps us to erase our worries.

Después de terminar con nuestra conversación y ver que su estado de ánimo respondió favorablemente le propuse jugar en familia un juego de mesa y así lograr pasar una tarde no solo con lindos recuerdos, sino también con un presente que nos ayude a borrar nuestras preocupaciones.

Without a doubt the power of our mind is wonderful and one does not realize how resorting to beautiful memories can reverse bad feelings.

Sin dudas el poder de nuestra mente es maravilloso y uno no se termina de dar cuenta de como recurriendo a lindos recuerdos se puede llegar a revertir malas sensaciones.
